Israel competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. 30 competitors, 25 men and 5 women, took part in 42 events in 10 sports. Israel won its first ever Olympic medals at these Games. The first medallist in Israel's history was Yael Arad, who won silver on July 30 in judo's under-61 kg category for women, and she was followed a day later by another judoka, Oren Smadja, who won bronze in men's under-71 kg category.
Judo was first included in the Summer Olympic Games at the 1964 Games in Tokyo, Japan. After not being included in 1968, judo has been an Olympic sport in each Olympiad since then. Only male judoka participated until the 1988 Summer Olympics, when women's judo was organized as a demonstration sport. Women judoka were first awarded medals at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Miriam Blasco Soto is a professional judo competitor, who resides in Alicante, Spain. She competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain where she won the gold medal in Women's Judo in the 56 kg division. One of the major streets in her city of residence, Alicante, was named after her.
Almudena Muñoz Martínez is a former judoka competitor from Spain who won the gold medal in women's –52 kg division at the 1992 Summer Olympics of Barcelona, Spain. Muñoz also competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, United States.
Nicola Kim Fairbrother MBE is a retired judoka from the United Kingdom, who competed at two Olympic Games. She holds the 8th Dan and is one of Britain's most prominent judoka.
Zhuang Xiaoyan is a Chinese judo coach, former international judo champion, and winner of the gold medal for judo in the women's +72 kg (heavyweight) division at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Her medal was China's first Olympic gold medal in judo.
Chiyori Masuchi is a retired judoka from Japan. She claimed a bronze medal in the Women's Lightweight (–56 kg) division at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. In the bronze medal match she defeated Belgium's Nicole Flagothier.
Lynn Joyce Roethke is an American female judoka. Among her most notable accomplishments, Lynn is a two-time Olympic athlete, a Pan American gold medalist, and World Champion Silver medalist. She was the first female to be inducted to the Black Belt Hall of Fame and voted as Olympic Athlete of the Year. She competed in the −61 kg division for most of her competitive career.
