Junior Orange Bowl (tennis)

The Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships is a youth tennis tournament, held in Coral Gables, Florida, for Boys & Girls in the "14 and under" and "12 and under" divisions. In 2024 the tournament will celebrate its 63rd anniversary. Robert Gomez is the tournament director.

History

The global Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships has as competitors the top-ranked boys and girls 12-and-under and 14-and-under junior players, from over 76 countries. [1]

The Orange Bowl tournament was founded in 1947. [2] The "14 and under" and "12 and under" tournaments began in 1962. Past champions include legends, Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert, Juan Martin del Potro, Steffi Graf, Andy Murray, Monica Seles, Tommy Haas, Coco Gauff and Miami great, Mary Jo Fernandez. [3] [4] Winners have come from over 20 nations. [5]

Swiss tennis player Roger Federer's main accomplishments as a junior player came at Wimbledon, where, in 1998, he won both the singles tournament over Irakli Labadze, in straight sets, and the doubles with Olivier Rochus, over the team of Michaël Llodra and Andy Ram, also in straight sets. In addition, Federer was a runner-up at the US Open Junior tournament in 1998, losing the final to David Nalbandian. Federer would go on to win four other junior singles tournaments in his career.

The Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships, known as the Dunlop Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships from 2008 to 2013 with Dunlop as the title sponsor, and renamed the Metropolia Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships from 2013 onwards, is a prestigious junior tennis tournament, one of five that are rated by the ITF as 'Grade A'. Established in 1947 in Miami Beach, the tournament has for years featured both boys and girls singles and doubles draws at both '18 and under' (under-19) and '16 and under' (under-17) age categories. From 1999 to 2010, the tournament had been held each December at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Florida. Since 2011, it has been held at the Frank Veltri Tennis Center in Plantation, Florida.

Grace Min is an American tennis player. She has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 97, achieved on 2 March 2015, and she peaked at No. 308 in the doubles rankings, on 17 September 2012. Min won the 2011 US Open girls' singles title. She also won the 2011 Wimbledon girls' doubles title with Eugenie Bouchard.

Filip Peliwo is a Canadian-born Polish professional tennis player. He reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 161 on May 21, 2018. In 2022, he began competing for Poland. Peliwo became the first Canadian male and second Canadian ever to win a Grand Slam in singles at any level with his 2012 Wimbledon boys' title win. This was Canada's second Grand Slam title in two days, one day after Eugenie Bouchard's. With the victory, Peliwo reached the No. 1 combined junior world ranking in July 2012, the first time a Canadian has been top ranked. He won his second straight junior Grand Slam title at the 2012 US Open. Peliwo was also runner-up in the boys singles events at the 2012 Australian Open and French Open.

Yshai Oliel is an Israeli tennis player. He has a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 305 achieved on 8 August 2022 and a doubles ranking of No. 809 achieved on 27 June 2022.

During her pro career from 1991 to 1998, she won five titles on the ITF Women's Circuit, received a wildcard entry and won her first round match at the 1995 US Open. The Tennis Europe Junior Tour is the European tennis tour for players who are in the age range recognized by Tennis Europe as junior athletes. The Tour was organized by the European Tennis Association (ETA), now known as Tennis Europe.

ITF World Junior Championship are the international team events for the 14-and-under age category. The senior equivalents of the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Billie Jean King Cup are the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup, respectively.

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic's main accomplishments as a junior player came in the U14 circuit of the ETA Junior Tour, where, at the U14 European championship in 2001, he won both the singles tournament over Lukáš Lacko and the doubles with compatriot Bojan Božović. Djokovic also led the Serbian team to victory in the European Summer Cup, thus ending the year as a European champion in singles, doubles and in team competition, while also winning the silver medal at the ITF World Junior Championship in a team competition for Yugoslavia. Djokovic ended 2001 at the top of the ETA rankings for U14s, one place ahead of future rival Andy Murray at No. 2. He was also briefly the No. 1-ranked U16 player in 2003.
