The Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year was introduced in 1991, and awarded for the best rap album in Canada. It was formerly known as Best Rap Recording from 1993 to 2002.[ citation needed ]
Before 1999, because of the relatively limited commercial visibility of Canadian hip hop, the award was presented the evening before the main Juno Award ceremony, along with the untelevised technical and industry insider awards. In 1998, Rascalz won the award, but claiming racism as a factor in the award's scheduling, refused to accept it. [1] The Junos moved the award to the main ceremony the following year.
The award nominations commonly mixed individual singles and full albums. At the Juno Awards of 2021, CARAS president Allan Reid announced that beginning with the Juno Awards of 2022, the category will be split into new separate categories for Rap Album/EP of the Year and Rap Single of the Year. [2]

The Juno Awards, more popularly known as the JUNOS, are awards presented annually to Canadian musical artists and bands to acknowledge their artistic and technical achievements in all aspects of music. Irregularly presented from 1979 to 1984, the award was then discontinued until the Juno Awards announced in 2017 that they would revive the category for the Juno Awards of 2018.
The Juno Award for "Pop Album of the Year" has been awarded since 1999, as recognition each year for the best pop album in Canada. The category was first named as Best Pop Album but it changed to Best Pop/Adult Album in 2000, the following year it returned to be Best Pop Album from 2001 to 2002, finally in 2003 was changed to Pop Album of the Year and has remained that way since then.
The Juno Award for Global Music Album of the Year has been awarded since 1992, as recognition each year for the best world music album in Canada. It has previously been known as other names including "Best World Best Recording" and "Best World Music Album", with the current name being established in 2022.
The Juno Award for "Reggae Recording of the Year" has been awarded since 1985, as recognition each year for the best reggae album or single in Canada.
The Juno Award for "Rock Album of the Year" has been awarded since 1991, as recognition each year for the best rock album in Canada. The award has been called a number of other names, including the "Best Hard Rock/Metal Album" and "Best Rock Album".
The Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year has been awarded since 2000, as recognition each year for the best vocal jazz album in Canada.
The Juno Award for Heavy Metal Album of the Year is an annual award, presented by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) to honor the year's best album by a Canadian artist in the genres of heavy metal. The album is open to all subgenres of heavy metal. Rock, punk, crossover and hardcore artists are not eligible for this category.
The Juno Awards of 2016, honouring Canadian music achievements, were presented in Calgary the weekend of 2–3 April 2016. The ceremonies were held at the Scotiabank Saddledome and televised on CTV. It was the first televised awards show to be broadcast in 4K ultra high-definition.

Beginning with the 2016 ceremony, the solo and group categories were replaced with contemporary and traditional roots categories, to "ensure two genres of music are not competing against each other in the same category".

The primary telecast ceremonies were held at Budweiser Gardens, preceded by numerous Juno Week events from 11 March. This was the first time the Juno Awards were hosted in London.
