KDXU (890 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station simulcasting a news/talk format with co-owned KDXU-FM (106.1) in Colorado City, Arizona. Licensed to St. George, Utah, KDXU 890 is owned by Townsquare Media. [2] The studios are on Ridgeview Drive in St. George.
By day, KDXU is powered at 10,000 watts non-directional. As 890 AM is a clear channel frequency reserved for Class A station WLS in Chicago, at night KDXU uses a directional antenna with a three-tower array. The transmitter is on East 2450 South near South 3210 East. [3] Programming is also heard on 99-watt FM translator K223DI at 92.5 MHz. [4]
Weekdays begin with a local news and interview show hosted by Dale Desmond. The rest of the KDXU schedule is nationally syndicated talk programs: The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, The Sean Hannity Show, The Mark Levin Show, The Ramsey Show with Dave Ramsey, Coast to Coast AM with George Noory and First Thing Today with Joe Thomas. [5]
Weekends feature specialty shows on health, money, religion, travel and technology. Syndicated weekend shows include The Kim Komando Show, The Larry Kudrow Show and Travel with Rudy Maxa . Most hours begin with an update from Fox News Radio. KDXU is also an affiliate of the BYU Cougars Sports Network.
KDXU signed on the air on July 3, 1957. [6] It originally broadcast on 1450 kHz. It aired a full service format of Middle of the Road (MOR) music with news, talk and sports. It was an affiliate of the ABC Information Radio Network.
In 1973, it added an FM station, KDXU-FM (93.5). The FM station aired an automated beautiful music format, playing quarter hour sweeps of soft instrumental music. It later switched its call sign to KZEZ and more recently back to KDXU-FM.
KDXU was only permitted to broadcast at 1,000 watts by day and 250 watts at night, a fraction of its current output. Management wanted to improve its signal. The station's frequency was moved to 890 kHz in September 1985. [7] A three-tower directional antenna was constructed for use from sunset to sunrise. The following year, KDXU and KZEZ were acquired by Simmons Family Media, Inc., based in Salt Lake City. Simmons later sold KDXU to Townsquare Media.
In January 2022, KDXU began simulcasting on FM translator K223DI at 92.5 MHz in St. George. Another simulcast, on KDXU-FM (106.1) in Colorado City, Arizona, was added in December 2024. [8]
