Rajkeswur Purryag,GCSK (born 12 December 1947,also known as Kailash Purryag) is a former Mauritian politician who served as the fifth president of Mauritius from 2012 to May 2015. [1] [2] He was elected president of Mauritius by the National Assembly and took office on 21 July 2012. He succeeded Sir Anerood Jugnauth,who spent nine years as president from 2003 until resigning in March 2012. Kailash Purryag previously served as Member of Parliament,Minister and Speaker of the National Assembly;he made his debut in the political arena at an early age in 1976. [3]
Rajkeswur Purryag,better known as Kailash,was born on 12 December 1947 in Camp Fouquereaux,Mauritius. He is a Bihari Mauritian and his ancestors originated from the Indian state of Bihar. His ancestry is traced from a Nonia caste family of Bihar. [4] He attended the Shree Shamboonath Government School and later the Mauritius College. He was sworn in as attorney-at-law in 1973. The same year he joined the Mauritian Labour Party. He became general secretary of the party in 1984 and president in 1995. [5] [6]
Kailash Purryag became a member of the Labour Party in 1973. He was a member of the Municipal Commission of the Municipal Council of Vacoas-Phoenix from 1974 to 1976. Purryag was elected member of the Legislative Assembly for the first time at the 1976 elections held on 20 December 1976 as one of the three members for Constituency No. 15 (La Caverne &Phoenix) of the Independence Party (coalition of Labour &CAM). [7] Purryag became Minister of Social Security from January 1980 to June 1982. In 1981,he was appointed as Leader of Delegation by the Government to negotiate adequate compensation for the Ilois Community in 1981 from the British Government.
At the 1982 elections Purryag was not elected when he stood as candidate of the Parti de l'Alliance Nationale (Labour-CAM-PMSD) at Constituency No.15 (La Caverne-Phoenix). He was defeated by the MMM-PSM candidates Peerthum,Juwaheer and Maudarbocus. [8]
As a candidate of PMSD in Constituency No.17 (Curepipe-Midlands) at the 1983 elections he was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly. As the PMSD joined forces with the victorious MSM-Labour coalition after the 1983 elections Purryag became Minister of Health from January 1984 to January 1986. [9]
Purryag was not a candidate at the 1987 elections and at the 1991 elections he was not elected when he stood as PMSD-Labour candidate in Constituency No.6. [10] [11] He served as Secretary General of the Labour Party from 1987 to 1991 and became President of the Party from March 1991 to March 1996.
Purryag was elected Member of the National Assembly at the 1995 general elections as a candidate of the Labour-MMM coalition. He became Minister of Economic Planning,Information &Telecommunications from December 1995 to July 1997. He was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs &International Trade from July 1997 to September 2000.
At the 2000 general election Kailash Purryag (Labour-PMXD) was defeated at Constituency No. 11 Vieux Grand Port and Rose Belle by Pravind Jugnauth and Rajesh Bhowon of the MSM-MMM coalition.
Although he did not take an active part in the 2005 and 2010 general elections Purryag was nominated in July 2005 and in May 2010 as Speaker of the National Assembly. He remained there until 2012. [12] [13] On Friday 20 July 2012,the Clerk of the National Assembly of Mauritius informed the House that,immediately following his election as President of the Republic at to-day's sitting,the Honourable Rajkeswur Purryag,GCSK,GOSK,has submitted his resignation as Speaker of the National Assembly. [14]
As stated on the Section 28 (2) (a) of the Constitution of Mauritius,the President shall be elected by the Assembly on a motion made by the Prime Minister and supported by the votes of a majority of all the Members of the Assembly. On 20 July 2012,the National Assembly elected Rajkeswur Purryag as President of Mauritius. The motion was presented by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam and seconded by Rashid Beebeejaun. [14] Kailash Purryag became the fifth President of Mauritius and took office on 21 July 2012. His first official visit was at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden,where he meditated at the monument of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam,the father of the nation. [15]
Following the victory of the MSM/PSMD/ML alliance led by Sir Anerood Jugnauth in December 2014,he was expected to resign to make way for the alliance's candidate,Ameenah Gurib-Fakim,to assume the Presidency instead. In an official communique from the State House,he confirmed that he made an agreement with Jugnauth to remain as President up to May 2015 to ensure the hand over of power from the Ramgoolam administration to the new government in a climate of stability. He eventually resigned on 29 May 2015. [16]

He is recipient of both highest order merits in Mauritius. He was elevated as Grand Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GOSK) on 12 March 1998 and Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GCSK) on 12 March 2009. [17] He received the Conferment of Honorary Freedom of the City of Port Louis on 23 August 2007. [12] On 9 January 2013,Purryag received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman,the highest honour conferred to overseas Indians at the 13th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas. [18]
Kailash Purryag was living at Camp Fouquereaux,Curepipe before he became president,he is the eldest of a family with nine children,he is married to Aneetah Purryag since 8 December 1973,he has a daughter and two grandchildren. [6] During a state visit to India in January 2013,Purryag visited the village of his forefathers in Bajeetpore,Patna. His great grandfather Purryag 338493 sailed to Mauritius in 1869 to work as indentured labourer or Coolie. [19] [20]
The known and sometimes formally documented history of Mauritius begins with its possible discovery by Austronesians under the Austronesian expansion from pre-Han Taiwan, circa 1500 to 1000 BC, and then by Arabs,, followed by Portuguese and its appearance on European maps in the early 16th century. Mauritius was successively colonized by the Netherlands, France and Great Britain, and became independent on 12 March 1968.
Politics of Mauritius takes place in a framework of a parliamentary democracy. The separation of powers is among the three branches of the Government of Mauritius, namely the legislative, the executive and the Judiciary, is embedded in the Constitution of Mauritius. Being a Westminster system of government, Mauritius's unicameral house of parliament officially, the National Assembly, is supreme. It elects the President and the Prime Minister. While the President is voted by a single majority of votes in the house, the Prime Minister is the MP who supports a majority in the house. The President is the Head of State while the prime minister has full executive power and is the Head of Government who is assisted by a council of Ministers. Mauritius has a multi-party system. The Economist Intelligence Unit rated Mauritius a "full democracy" in 2022.
Sir Anerood Jugnauth, GCSK, PV, was a Mauritian statesman, politician and barrister who served both as President and Prime Minister of Mauritius. He was Member of Parliament for Piton & Riviere Du Rempart. A central figure of Mauritian politics in the 1980s and 1990s, he was Leader of the Opposition from 1976 to 1982. He served four consecutive terms as prime minister from 1982 to 1995 and again from 2000 to 2003. He was then elected as President from 2003 to 2012. Following his party's victory in the 2014 general elections, he served his sixth and final term as prime minister, becoming the nation's longest serving prime minister with more than 18 years of tenure, overtaking Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, who held the office for 14 years.
Paul Raymond Bérenger is a Mauritian politician who was Prime Minister of Mauritius from 2003 to 2005. He has been Leader of the Opposition on several occasions – from 1983 to 1987, 1997 to 2000, 2005 to 2006, 2007 to 2013, October 2013 to 15 September 2014, and again from December 2014 to December 2016 when he was replaced by Xavier-Luc Duval. Following his party's defeat in the 2014 general elections, he became Leader of the Opposition for the sixth time, making him the longest ever to serve in this constitutional position. He was also deputy prime minister from 1995 to 1997 and again from 2000 to 2003, and he was a cabinet minister in the government of Anerood Jugnauth in 1982 and 1991. Bérenger, a Christian of Franco-Mauritian descent, has been the only non-Hindu prime minister of Mauritius, or, more particularly, the only prime minister who has not belonged to the Jugnauth or Ramgoolam families.
The President of the Republic of Mauritius is the head of state of the Republic of Mauritius. Mauritius is a parliamentary republic, and the president functions as a ceremonial figurehead, elected by the National Assembly as set out by the Constitution of Mauritius. The current office-holder is Prithvirajsing Roopun. He took the office on 2 December 2019. The president's official residence is the State House.

The Labour Party is a centre-left social-democratic political party in Mauritius. It is one of four main Mauritian political parties, along with the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM), the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) and the Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate (PMSD). The party is led by Navin Ramgoolam. It tends to be more popular amongst Indo-Mauritians, especially in more rural areas.
Navinchandra Ramgoolam, is a Mauritian politician who twice served as the Prime Minister of Mauritius and leader of the Labour Party (Mauritius). He was Leader of the Opposition from 1991 to 1995. He served as Prime Minister for the first time from December 1995 until September 2000, and then became Leader of the Opposition again from October 2000 to 4 July 2005. On 5 July 2005, he became prime minister for a second term after his coalition, "Alliance Sociale" won the general elections. He was re-elected Prime Minister in 2005, serving till 2014, when he was defeated.
The Militant Socialist Movement is a centre-left political party in Mauritius. It is the single largest political party in the National Assembly of Mauritius, having won 42 of the 69 seats in the 2019 general elections. It also holds the largest number of seats in all city/town councils through the country with 60 councillors out of 120. The party tends to be more popular amongst Indo-Mauritians.
Pravind Kumar Jugnauth is a Mauritian politician serving as the prime minister of Mauritius since January 2017. Jugnauth has been the leader of the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) party since April 2003. He has held a number of ministerial portfolios and also been Leader of the Opposition.
Charles Gaëtan Xavier Luc Duval is a Mauritian politician and was also Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius in the cabinet of Sir Anerood Jugnauth from December 2014 to December 2016. He was also Minister of Tourism & External Communications and serves as 1st Member of Parliament elected from Constituency No 18 Belle Rose & Quatres Bornes. He is the leader of the Mauritian Social Democrat Party (PMSD). His party has 4 MPs at parliament and he succeeded Arvin Boolell as Leader of Opposition on 4 March 2021.
General elections were held in Mauritius on 15 September 1991. Three main parties gained seats in this election: the Militant Socialist Movement, Mauritian Militant Movement and the Labour Party. The MSM formed an alliance with the MMM and the Labour Party formed an alliance with the Mauritian Social Democrat Party (PMSD). On 17 September 1991, results showed that MSM-MMM won 57 out of 66 seats. This gave 95% of seats to MSM-MMM leader Anerood Jugnauth and 5% to Labour Party-PMSD leader Navin Ramgoolam.
The L'Alliance de L'avenir was a political alliance in Mauritius which was formed in 2010 for the next parliamentary elections which were held on 5 May 2010. It is an alliance of the Labour Party, Mouvement Socialiste Militant and Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate. It was formed by the prime minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam and is led by three other people, namely Rashid Beebeejaun, Xavier-Luc Duval and Pravind Jugnauth.

She is Member of Parliament representing Constituency No 8, Moka & Quartier Militaire. She is a former Minister of Arts & Culture serving in the cabinet of Paul Berenger for a short period of 6 months.
Agnès Monique Ohsan Bellepeau GOSK is a Mauritian politician and was the fourth vice president of Mauritius from November 2010 to April 2016. She was acting president of Mauritius from 31 March 2012 to 21 July 2012 when Sir Anerood Jugnauth resigned up to the inauguration of Kailash Purryag to the office. She was again acting president from 29 May 2015 to 5 June 2015 when Kailash Purryag resigned up to the inauguration of Ameenah Gurib to the office.
Santi Bai 'Maya' Hanoomanjee GCSK is the High Commissioner of Mauritius to India. She is a Mauritian politician and former Civil Servant who was the speaker of the National Assembly of Mauritius from December 2014 to November 2019. She was the first woman to hold this constitutional office and accordingly was the highest ranked female in the republic. She is a former Minister of Health of Mauritius who served from 11 May 2010 until the coalition government of Mauritian Labour Party & Militant Socialist Movement dissolved in July 2011. She served in Navin Ramgoolam's Cabinet. She served as 2nd Member of Parliament elected in constituency no 14, Black River & La Savanne from 2005 to 2014. She is a member of the MSM and was the first woman to hold the office of Speaker.
General elections were held in Mauritius on 10 December 2014 and resulted in a landslide victory for the Alliance Lepep coalition, which secured 47 of the elected seats under the leadership of Sir Anerood Jugnauth. The Labour Party–Mauritian Militant Movement (PTR–MMM) alliance led by Navin Ramgoolam got 13 seats.
