The Karama Armoured Warfare Training School(KAWATS), is an Armoured Warfare Training School in Uganda, East Africa. Typically, graduates are commanders in the Uganda People's Defence Force. Other African countries also send their military personnel to the school for training.
The school is located in Kabamba, Mubende District, Central Uganda. This location, lies approximately 49 kilometres (30 mi), by road, southwest of Mubende, the nearest large town and the location of the district headquarters. [2] Kabamba is located approximately 200 kilometres (120 mi), west of Kampala, the capital of Uganda and the largest city in that country. The school, built by Uganda's Ministry of Defence, at a cost of USh 1.8 billion (approximately US$730,000), was commissioned in February 2005. Medallion Engineering Limited, was the lead construction contractor. The school can accommodate approximately 450 students at one time. [5] The current Commandant of KAWATS is Brigadier Francis Chemonges, formerly the Armoured Brigade Operations Officer. [6]
The Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF), previously known as the National Resistance Army, is the armed forces of Uganda. From 2007 to 2011, the International Institute for Strategic Studies estimated the UPDF had a total strength of 40,000–45,000, consisting of land forces and an air wing. Recruitment to the forces is done annually.

Brigadier Joseph Semwanga is a Ugandan military officer. He currently serves as the Commander of the Armoured Brigade, based in Masaka. He was appointed to his current position in May 2013, replacing Major General David Muhoozi, who became the Commander of Land Forces within the Uganda People's Defence Forces.
Major General Elly Kayanja, is a Ugandan military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF). Effective September 2014, he is the Head of Operation Wealth Creation Programme, whose objective is to improve the standard of living of rural citizens, through farming. He currently serves as the commandant of Kalama Armoured Warfare Training School (KAWATS), located in Kabamba, Mubende District, Central Uganda. Immediately prior to his appointment to his current post, in May 2013, he served as the operations officer of the Armoured Brigade, located in Masaka, Masaka District, Central Uganda. In 2010, at the rank of lieutenant colonel, Francis Chemonges was a commander of a battle group in AMISOM, based in Mogadishu, Somalia.
Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (WSACCO), also referred to as Wazalendo Sacco, is a savings and credit co-operative society in Uganda. It is an institutional Sacco composed of Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) personnel and their families, UPDF Reserve Forces, and staff of Uganda's Ministry of Defence. WSACCO is affiliated with the Uganda Co-operative Savings and Credit Union Limited and with the Uganda Co-operative Alliance.
Lieutenant General Kayanja Muhanga is a Ugandan army officer, who currently serves as Commander of Land Forces in UPDF. He was appointed to that position in October 2022 by the President of Uganda and Commander in chief of the UPDF, Yoweri Museveni. He previously served as commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force contingent in Eastern DRC under Operation Shujaa. He was appointed to that position in January 2021 by Yoweri Museveni, the Commander in Chief of the UPDF and the President of Uganda. Prior to that, Maj. General Muhanga served as the commandant of the military police within the UPDF.
Major General Richard Prit Olum, commonly known as Dick Olum, is a military officer in the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF). Effective 13 May 2024, he serves as commander of the "South Sudan Stabilization Mechanism", an observer force to ensure adherence to the peace agreements. Before that, he served as the Ugandan commander of the UPDF forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo under the joint Uganda/DRC mission code named Operation Shujaa. He simultaneously served as the commander of the UPDF Mountain Division, based in Fort Portal, Kabarole District at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains. His appointment was made on 12 October 2022.

She is the immediate past deputy commander of the Uganda Special Forces Command, the special military unit of the UPDF responsible for presidential and first family security. She also represents the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) in the 11th Ugandan parliament.
