This seat was once held by 2 Chief Ministers S. R. Bommai and Jagadish Shettar and former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai contested in this constituency once in 1994 but lost to Jagadish Shettar.

Dharwad Rural Vidhan Sabha seat was one of the seats in Karnataka state assembly in India until 2008 when it was made defunct. It was part of Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency.
