Bijapur was one of 224 assembly constituencies of the Indian state of Karnataka until 2008. [1] The constituency was readjusted in 2008 on the implementation of the Delimitation Commission of 2002 as Bijapur City Assembly constituency. [2] The constituency was a part of Bombay State before the States Reorganisation Act, 1956. [3]

Basangouda Ramangouda Patil Yatnal is an Indian Bharatiya Janata Party politician and Hindu leader who was the Minister of state for Textiles from 1 July 2002 to 8 September 2003 and Minister of state for Railways from 8 September 2003 to 16 May 2004 and current MLA from Bijapur City Assembly constituency since 2018. He has been a member of parliament from the Bijapur constituency for two terms and has been a member of the legislative council from the Bijapur Local Authorities constituency for one term.
The Delimitation Commission of India is a commission established by the Government of India under the provisions of the Delimitation Commission Act, tasked with redrawing the boundaries of legislative assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies based on the last census. The present delimitation of constituencies has been done on the basis of 2001 census under the provisions of Delimitation Act, 2002.

As of the latest elections in 2024, Captain Brijesh Chowta represents this constituency. It comprises whole area of Dakshina Kannada district only.
