Bijapur was one of 224 assembly constituencies of the Indian state of Karnataka till 2008. [1] The constituency is readjusted in 2008 on the implementation of the Delimitation Commission of 2002 as Bijapur City Vidhana Sabha constituency. [2] The constituency was a part of the Bombay State before the States Reorganisation Act, 1956. [3]

Basangouda Ramangouda Patil Yatnal is an Indian BJP politician who was the Minister of state for Textiles from 1 July 2002 to 8 September 2003 and Minister of state for Railways from 8 September 2003 to 16 May 2004 and current MLA from Bijapur City Assembly constituency since 2018. He has been a member of parliament from the Bijapur constituency for two terms and has been a member of the legislative council from the Bijapur Local Authorities constituency for one term.

It first held elections in 2009 and its first member of parliament (MP) was Nalin Kumar Kateel of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). As of the latest elections in 2019, Kateel represents this constituency. It comprises whole area of Dakshina Kannada district only.

It first held elections in 2009 and its first member of parliament was D. V. Sadananda Gowda of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Gowda was selected on 4 August 2011 to become Chief Minister (CM) of Karnataka after the previous CM B. S. Yeddyurappa resigned. He therefore had to resign as MP for this seat which forced a by-election in 2012. This by-election was won by K. Jayaprakash Hegde of the Indian National Congress (INC). As of the latest elections in 2019, Shobha Karandlaje of the BJP represents this constituency.
