Waqo Gutu

General Waqo Gutu Usu was an Oromo rebel and leader of one of the earlier Oromo resistance fighter movements; the Bale Revolt, which in the 1960s had fought against the feudalistic system in place in the Ethiopian Imperial. He was elected chairman of the United Liberation Forces of Oromia in 2000. In 2006, Gutu died in a Nairobi hospital, survived by 20 sons and 17 daughters.

Gutu District District in Masvingo, Zimbabwe

Gutu is the third largest district in Masvingo Province, southern Zimbabwe, after Chiredzi and Mwenezi. It is the northernmost district in the province. The name "Gutu" is historically reported to have emerged from "Chinomukutu wemiseve" – meaning, "the one with a load of arrows". This is according to oral historical folklore of the "Gumbo" clan who are said to have taken over the area from the "Shiri" clan through killing them by poisoning the fruit trees in the "Gona" area. Mupandawana is the largest district service centre. It was designated as a "growth point" during the early years of independent Zimbabwe together with such places as Gokwe in the Midlands Province and Juru in Mashonaland East province. Mpandawana gained town status in April 2014.

Octavian Guţu is an Olympic swimmer from Moldova who swam for his native country at the 2004 Olympics. He then joined the French team and represented Racing Club de France RCF in national (interclubs) swimming meets. In the 2006 Tours, he became an unofficial French champion in the 4x100 Freestyle relay. The same year, he won a gold medal for his Panthéon-Assas University. He has also swam internationally for Romania at the 2007 World Championship Melbourne in the 4x100 Medley Relay and classified for 8th place in the world. In 2007, he joined the Cannet66 swim club where he trained with Philippe Lucas, a famous French coach, and his young protégé Laure Manaudou who won three Olympic medals including gold in the 400m freestyle, silver in the 800m free, and bronze in the 100m back.
