Kampong Menunggol (Malay : Kampung Menunggol) or simply Menunggol, is a village in Brunei-Muara District, Brunei, on the island Pulau Berambang . The population was 541 in 2016.^[1] It is one of the villages within Mukim Kota Batu, a mukim in the district.

Name

Brunei has a few place names that are tree related. According to legend, the name Menunggol derives from Bruneian words for tree stumps known as tunggul. No one really knows where, but tree stumps gave the neighborhood Kampong Menunggol its name.^[2] According to sources from the Brunei History Centre, the village existed before the outbreak of the Second World War.^[3]

Geography

Kampong Menunggol is a small village located on the banks of the Brunei River and to get there using an outboard motor.^[3]

Administration

The establishment of the Majlis Perundingan Kampung (MPK) Menunggol which began in 1993 is intended as a driving force and catalyst to foster good citizenship in support of the leadership of the Sultan of Brunei, to strengthen the effectiveness of the institution of village heads as the core of grassroots leadership and to organize and work on plans for the well-being of the people and the villagers especially for the development and development of the village.^[3]

Economy

In order to move development in Kampong Menunggol, a committee has been created to move the One Village One Product (1K1P) Program to encourage the communities of mukim and villages to be more creative, innovative, independent, resilient, competitive towards progress and generate the economy of mukim and village by enriching small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) which can not only contribute to improving the national economy but also self-sufficiency.^[3]

Several families in the village are actively working on their own products in order to generate an increasing cost of subsistence. There are two or three families that work on making various types of kelupis such as pandan leaf kelupis and cored kelupis. In addition, there are also those who work on the manufacture of shrimp crackers for which the demand is so encouraging. Before this, he explained again, the manufacture of gulanau was also very active in Kampong Menunggol.^[3]

Infrastructure

This village have received basic facilities and infrastructure provided by the government such as schools, roads, clean water supply, electricity supply, mosques and bridge piers.^[3]

Kampong Menunggol Mosque is the village mosque; it was inaugurated on 14 November 1980 and can accommodate 300 worshippers.^[4]

Recreation

The village also has historical places that attract people to visit the village such as Bukit (Hill) Batu Bujang Pahang, Bukit Batu Bertingkat and Bukit Batu Narkuning. The visitors not only consist of local people but also tourists from abroad who come to climb Batu Bujang Pahang. When at its peak, it will serve a panorama. The border between Brunei and Limbang, a row of mountains in Sabah and a stretch of houses around Kampong Ayer that entices climbers to visit there. There are four small huts for the climbers to rest. According to the ketua kampong, Bujang Batu Bujang Pahang was once used as a coal mining site in ancient times.^[3]
