The World Karate Federation (WKF) is the largest international governing body of sport karate with 191 member countries. It was formed in 1990, is the only karate organization recognised by the International Olympic Committee and has more than ten million members. The WKF organizes the Junior and Senior Karate World Championships, which are each held every other year. The President of the WKF is Antonio Espinos, and the headquarters are located in Madrid, Spain. The styles recognised by the WKF are Gōjū-ryū, Shitō-ryū, Shotokan and Wadō-ryū.

The karate competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will feature eight events. It will be the debut appearance of karate in the Olympics. Karate is part of the 2020 programme as one of five sports added specifically for 2020 rather than as a permanent sport. Two karate disciplines will be featured. Kumite is the sparring discipline and will have three weight classes each for men and women. Kata is the solo form discipline, and will have one event each for men and women. Competitors choose the kata to demonstrate from 102 kata that are recognized by the World Karate Federation. Competitors are not allowed to demonstrate the same Kata twice during the tournament. Each event will have 10 competitors.

The karate competition at the World Games 2017 took place from July 25 to July 26, in Wrocław in Poland, in the GEM Sports Complex. 96 sportsmen from 39 nations participated in the event.

Karin Prinsloo is a South African karateka, gold medal winner of the 6th World Games (2001) in the under 60 kg Kumite category and Karate instructor formerly based in Durban, South Africa, now hailing from Perth, Australia. She is listed among the top 100 Karate competitors of all time.
