Keilor East railway station is a railway station currently under construction as a part of the Melbourne Airport railway line that will serve the suburbs of Keilor East, Keilor Park and Airport West. It is scheduled to open in 2029. [1]
The Melbourne Airport Rail project plans to build a new Metro line through the north-west of Melbourne using the rail reservation currently used by the Albion-Jacana freight corridor. Since the announcement of the project, local councils have advocated for a station to be added to serve nearby suburbs, arguing the area is currently underserved by public transport. [2]
In September 2022, the Victorian Government announced the project would add a station on the border of Keilor East and Airport West, connecting 150,000 people to the metropolitan rail network. [3] [4] According to media reports, the Government did not plan to include the new station in the initial project, but after local advocacy and the public intervention of Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll in parliament, the project's business case was supplemented to add the station. [5]
The Government's supplementary business case argued delivering the station at the same time as the link would save 15% compared with building the station after the line was operational. [6]
The station will be situated along the Melbourne Airport rail link, as part of two planned stations along the line. Trains will run from Melbourne Airport to Keilor East before continuing to Sunshine, through the Metro Tunnel and then along the Pakenham/Cranbourne lines. [7] Services are planned to run every ten minutes all-day. [3]
Trains will take 6 minutes to travel to Melbourne Airport, 8 minutes to Sunshine, and 27 minutes to the Melbourne CBD. [8]
Sunshine railway station is located on the Sunbury line in Victoria, Australia. Originally named Braybrook Junction for the convergence of the major railways from central Melbourne to Ballarat and Bendigo, it was renamed when the suburb of Sunshine, which it serves, took its name from the nearby Sunshine Harvester Works. With the expansion of the railway network in Melbourne's west, Sunshine grew in importance, with cross-suburban goods routes constructed to Newport and from the adjacent Albion to Jacana line. From the mid-20th century, it became an interchange for the main interstate routes to South Australia and New South Wales, when the through line from Melbourne to Sydney was completed, although the main line to Adelaide was later diverted. In the early 21st century, the station was demolished and reconstructed to serve the diversion of the main passenger route to Geelong and beyond. It has been identified as a possible route for a future line to Melbourne Airport and as an interchange for the orbital Suburban Rail Loop.
Albion railway station is located on the Sunbury line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the western Melbourne suburb of Albion, and it opened on 5 January 1860 as Albion and Darlington. It closed on 1 January 1861, and reopened on 24 March 1891 as Albion.

Proposals for expansion of the Melbourne rail network are commonly presented by political parties, government agencies, industry organisations and public transport advocacy groups. The extensions proposed take a variety of forms: electrification of existing routes to incorporate them into the suburban rail system; reconstruction of former passenger rail lines along pre-existing easements; entirely new routes intended to serve new areas with heavy rail or provide alternative routes in congested areas; or track amplification along existing routes to provide segregation of services. The Metro Tunnel is a metropolitan rail infrastructure project currently under construction in Melbourne, Australia. It includes the construction of twin 9-kilometre (5.6 mi) rail tunnels between South Kensington and South Yarra with five new underground stations. The tunnel will connect the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines with the Sunbury line, creating a new cross-city line that bypasses Flinders Street station and the City Loop. From 2029 the line will also serve Melbourne Airport via a new branch line west of Sunshine station.
Melbourne Airport Rail is a rail link under construction from the Melbourne CBD to Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine. Since October 2022 the project has also been branded as SRL Airport. The rail link is to run through the under-construction Metro Tunnel, running 27 km from the airport to Town Hall station in the city centre with 12 km of new track between the airport and Sunshine station. The link will be a new branch of the Melbourne Metro rail network and run High-Capacity Metro Trains at a 10-minute frequency. The project is being delivered by the Victorian state government agency Rail Projects Victoria.
The Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) is a group of new rapid transit lines planned or under construction in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The project is divided into four distinct sections. The two main sections, SRL East and SRL North, would together form a single 60 km (37 mi) fully automated orbital metro line through the city's middle suburbs, with 13 stations between Cheltenham and Melbourne Airport connecting to eight existing Melbourne rail lines. SRL East is currently under construction and is planned to open in 2035.
The Western Rail Plan is a metropolitan rail infrastructure project being undertaken in Melbourne, Australia. The project was initially announced during the 2018 Victorian state election by the State Government. It includes the electrification of two currently existing regional lines to Melton and Wyndham Vale, as well as fast rail to Geelong, and other network capacity upgrades. The project will allow for much higher capacity on the Western Corridor. The electrification to Melton is part of Stage 3 of the PTV Network Development Plan. $100 million is being invested in detailed planning and design work, to deliver the full separation of regional and metro services on the Geelong and Ballarat lines. Staging of the works component of the plan are being developed alongside the business case for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link.
