Benjamin Alan Carroll (born 12 July 1975) is an Australian politician and lawyer and has been the current deputy premier of Victoria since October 2023. [1] [2] He has been the deputy leader of the Victorian branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) since 2023 and has been a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the division of Niddrie since 2012.
Carroll also currently holds the positions of Minister For Education and Deputy Premier of Victoria in the state government since the 2023 cabinet reshuffle which resulted in the First Allan Ministry. He has previously held various ministerial portfolios since 2020 in Industry,employment,road safety and support,and Public Transport.
Carroll was born in Airport West,Victoria. [3] He attended primary school at St Christopher's Primary,and high school at St Bernard's College in Essendon. He then studied law at La Trobe University,graduating with honours in 2000. He was admitted as a legal solicitor in 2010. He holds a master's in law from La Trobe,having commenced the degree subsequent to his 2012 election.
Prior to entering politics Carroll worked as a sales assistant for Kmart in Airport West,and for the insurance company AAMI in its motor vehicles division. He also worked for the Victorian Government Solicitor between 2009 and 2010. [4]
Carroll has worked as a political adviser to Steve Bracks,Justin Madden,and Stephen Conroy. [4]
In 2012,Carroll was elected to the seat of Niddrie in a by-election following the resignation of Rob Hulls,and was re-elected in 2014 and 2018.
In December 2014,Carroll was appointed Parliamentary Secretary for Justice in the incoming Andrews Labor Government. In October 2017,he was appointed Minister for Industry and Employment,after the resignation of Wade Noonan from cabinet. [5]
In September 2023,Carroll was elected deputy party leader following the resignation of Daniel Andrews as Premier and incumbent deputy Jacinta Allan's ascension to the position. [6]

He became leader of the Victorian Labor Party and premier after the resignation of Steve Bracks. He also served as the Minister for Veterans' Affairs and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs. He contested his first election as premier at the November 2010 Victorian state election. His government was defeated by the Liberal/National Coalition led by Ted Baillieu. Brumby resigned as Labor leader after the election,on 30 November,to be replaced by Daniel Andrews. Within weeks of this leadership change,Brumby left parliament,with a Broadmeadows by-election taking place on 19 February 2011.
Rob Justin Hulls is a former Australian politician who was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1996 to 2012,representing the electorate of Niddrie. As well as serving as the Deputy Premier of Victoria,he held the posts of state attorney-general and Minister for Racing.
Sir Albert Arthur Dunstan,KCMG was an Australian politician who served as the 33rd premier of Victoria from 1935 to 1945,and previously as the 3rd deputy premier of Victoria for five days in March 1935. A member of the Country Party,now the National Party,his term as premier was the second-longest in the state's history and the longest of any third-party premier. He was the first person to hold the office of premier in its own right,and not an additional duty taken up by the Treasurer,Attorney-General or Chief Secretary.
Jacinta Marie Allan is an Australian politician serving as the 49th and current premier of Victoria since 2023. She has been the leader of the Victorian branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) since 2023 and has been a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the district of Bendigo East since 1999. She previously served as the 29th deputy premier of Victoria from 2022 to 2023. Allan is the longest-serving female minister in Victorian state history and currently the most senior sitting member of the Assembly.
James Anthony Merlino is a former Australian politician who served as 28th deputy premier of Victoria from 2014 to 2022 under Premier Daniel Andrews. He was the deputy leader of the Victorian branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) from 2012 to 2022 and a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the division of Monbulk from 2002 until his retirement.
Timothy Hugh Pallas is an Australian politician. He has been a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly since 2006,representing the electorate of Tarneit until 2014 and Werribee thereafter. He has served as Treasurer of Victoria in the all three of the Andrew Ministries since December 2014. and is currently still serving as treasurer in the Allan Ministry in 2023. Pallas previously served as Minister for Roads and Ports and Minister for Major Projects in the Brumby Ministry until 2010.
Gayle Tierney is an Australian politician. She has been a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council since November 2006,representing Western Victoria Region.
