Kenneth Kellogg is an American bass baritone opera singer and actor. He achieved fame for creating the role of the father in the opera Blue by Jeanine Tesori in 2019 at the Glimmerglass Festival and for impersonating Malcolm X at the Seattle Opera in 2024.

Career

Kellogg has been praised for his rich, resonant bass and for his "strong stage and vocal presence". [1] He was born and raised in Washington, D.C.. Music has been a part of his life since grade school, he participated in choirs throughout the city and started his formal training at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in his hometown. He is an Alumnus of the Adler Fellowship Program at San Francisco Opera (2009) and the Domingo-Caftriz Emerging Artist Program at Washington National Opera (2010–2012). He also trained at the Academy of Vocal Arts and at the Wolf Trap Opera. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan and from the Ohio University. [2] [3]

Kenneth Kellogg has soon been called to most of the leading opera houses in North America — Los Angeles Opera, Annapolis Opera, Atlanta Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Opera Memphis, Minnesota Opera, Opera North Carolina, Opera Tampa, Seattle Opera, Virginia Opera, and finally debuting at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in 2024. He also performed in Europa, first at Ópera de Oviedo in Spain, then at Lausanne Opera in Switzerland, in Toledo, Warsaw, Amsterdam and London. He frequently appeared with smaller companies all over the US and has collaborated with several voice-over projects. [3] [4]

Among his roles, many are staples of opera repertoire, from the Baroque to the present — like the title role of Handel's Hercules and the King in his Ariodante , many Mozart roles like Osmin in The Abduction from the Seraglio , the title role, Leporello and Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni , Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte , Sarastro and the Speaker in The Magic Flute , Rocco in Beethoven's Fidelio , Sir Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor by Otto Nicolai, Fasolt and Fafner in Wagner's Das Rheingold and Sparafucile in Verdi's Rigoletto , Ramfis and Il Re in Aida , Mephistopheles in Gounod's Faust or Colline in Puccini's La bohème . [4] Regularly he steps outside the traditional repertoire, mainly for roles by contemporary composers such as Queequeg in the workshop of Jake Heggie acclaimed Moby-Dick at San Francisco Opera.

Although he does not like the term 'Black opera', he got more and more involved in projects on black personalities, with an all-black cast or by an African Americans composer — from Emile Griffith in 2016 to Blue in 2019, Malcolm X in 2024 or Edmond Dédé in 2025. Griffith, who lived from 1938 to 2013, was an acclaimed boxer, black and gay, heroe of Champion , an Opera in Jazz by Terence Blanchard. Kenneth Kellogg led the cast of Opera Parallele in its west coast premiere. The production achieves rave reviews. In 2017, he impersonated Sam Bankhead, the American baseball player in the Negro leagues, active from 1931 to 1951, in the Dan Sonenberg Opera, The Summer King , dedicated to the life of Josh Gibson. The world premiere took place at the Pittsburgh Opera, its first world premiere in its 78-year history. [5]

The father in Blue , an opera by Tazewell Thompson and Jeanine Tesori, became his signature role. He created the role in 2019 at the Glimmerglass Festival and then performed it at the Michigan Opera in Detroit (2021), in Seattle, Pittsburgh and at De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam (2022), in Washington, at the English National Opera in London and in Toledo (2023), finally also in Chicago (2024). Blue is a painful narrative of a family torn apart when the only son of a black police officer is shot by a white police officer. Kenneth Kellogg about this role: "It's deeply important for me as an artist to be able to express a community's pain in opera, that is often overlooked in real life. We rarely get the opportunity to do that. We are most often tapping into and expressing the pain of another’s and never given space to express that of our own." [6]

In February and March 2024 he sang six performances of X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X by Thulani Davis and Anthony Davis at the Seattle Opera. He performed the title role, the civil rights leader Malcolm X who was assassinated in 1965. [7] In 2025, two more ″black projects″ are on the horizon — in January and February he will sing in concert performances of Morgaine , a rediscovered opera by Edmond Dédé (1827–1903), the earliest full-length opera by an African American composer. Morgaine will be presented by Opera Lafayette and Opera Créole in New Orleans, Washington D.C., New York City and College Park. [8] In May 2025 he will take over the role of Crown in Porgy and Bess at Washington National Opera.

Founded in 1975 by Peter Macris, the Glimmerglass Festival presents an annual season of operas at the Alice Busch Opera Theater on Otsego Lake eight miles (13 km) north of Cooperstown, New York, United States. The summer-only season usually consists of four productions performed in rotating repertory. Glimmerglass is well known for producing new, lesser-known, and rare works, many of which in years past have been co-produced with the New York City Opera. Jeanine Tesori, known earlier in her career as Jeanine Levenson, is an American composer and musical arranger best known for her work in the theater. She is the most prolific and honored female theatrical composer in history, with five Broadway musicals and six Tony Award nominations. She won the 1999 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music in a Play for Nicholas Hytner's production of Twelfth Night at Lincoln Center, the 2004 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Music for Caroline, or Change, the 2015 Tony Award for Best Original Score for Fun Home, making them the first female writing team to win that award, and the 2023 Tony Award for Best Original Score for Kimberly Akimbo. She was named a Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist twice for Fun Home and Soft Power.

Tazewell Thompson is an American theatre director, the former artistic director of the Westport Country Playhouse (2006–07) in Westport, Connecticut and the Syracuse Stage (1992–95) in New York state. Prior to that he was an assistant director at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. He is the Director of Opera Studies at Manhattan School of Music.

The Prince Theater is a non-profit theatrical producing organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and specializing in music theatre, including opera, music drama, musical comedy and experimental forms. Founded in 1984 as the American Music Theater Festival by Marjorie Samoff, Eric Salzman and Ron Kaiserman, for the first 15 years AMTF performed in various venues throughout Philadelphia. In March 1999, AMTF moved into the renovated Midtown Theater and changed its name in honor of Broadway producer and director Harold Prince. AMTF/Prince Theater produced 92 world premieres and sent 81 productions to theaters in New York and worldwide.

Edmond Dédé was an American musician and composer from New Orleans, Louisiana. A free-born Creole, he moved to Europe to study in Paris in 1855 and settled in France. For more than forty years, he worked in Bordeaux as assistant conductor at the Grand Théâtre and subsequently as conductor of the orchestras at the Théâtre l'Alcazar and the Folies Bordelaises.

Michael Maniaci is an American opera singer. Possessing a male soprano voice, Maniaci is noted for his claim to be able to sing into the upper soprano range without resorting to falsetto, an otherwise common phonation for men who sing in high registers, such as countertenors. Although this was possible for castrati because of the hormonal imbalance following castration, Maniaci claims that, for some unknown reason, his larynx did not develop and lengthen completely during puberty, causing his voice not to "break" in the usual manner. Maniaci claims that this physical particularity has given him the ability to sing in the soprano register without sounding like a typical countertenor or a female singer. There are, however, critics who claim that Maniaci actually sings in falsetto.

An American Soldier is an opera in two acts composed by Huang Ruo to a libretto by playwright David Henry Hwang. It initially premiered in a one-act version in 2014 and was subsequently expanded to two acts. The two-act version had its world premiere on 3 June 2018 during the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis festival. A New York production ran from 12-19 May 2024 at PAC NYC. The opera is based on a true story, the suicide of Danny Chen, a Chinese-American U.S. Army soldier who had been subjected to racial harassment and beatings by his fellow soldiers. Chen died in 2011 at his U.S. Army post in Afghanistan from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Gordon Hawkins is an American baritone known for his work on both the operatic and concert stage, particularly as one of the foremost interpreters of the roles of Porgy and Crown in Porgy and Bess. His music career began in the 1980s with him singing major concert repertoire and opera roles in his native Maryland. Since then, Hawkins has performed for national and international opera houses and venues, including the Metropolitan Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Seattle Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and more. In addition to performing, he is currently on the voice faculty at Arizona State University.

Grounded is an English-language opera in two acts with music by Jeanine Tesori and libretto by George Brant. The libretto is adapted from Brant's play of the same name. The opera features a pilot, Jess, and shows her struggle to adapt to drone warfare. The opera premiered at the Kennedy Center in 2023 to mixed reviews. Emily D'Angelo was praised for her role as the lead character, and Tesori's score was generally well received. The way in which the opera dealt with the theme of drone warfare was generally criticized by reviewers, who suggested it did not have a clear anti-war theme.

Emily D'Angelo is a Canadian mezzo-soprano. Since making her debut at 16, D'Angelo's most notable role to date has been playing the lead in the 2023 opera Grounded.
