The Khortytsia operational-strategic group is a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces active in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Khortytsia operational-strategic group was led by Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, who also served concurrently as the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Since January 2025 the commander is Mykhailo Drapatyi. [4]

On January 19, 2023, Syrskyi was part of a staff meeting alongside numerous commanders and important government leaders alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy noted in the meeting that the Khortytsia group was deployed in the "hottest" part of the front line. [1]

History

On August 11, 2022, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi of the Khortytsia Operational Strategic Group of Troops enacted a special exit and entry permit for the Donetsk Oblast. [5] The operational-strategic group participated in the 2022 Kharkiv counteroffensive in the Kharkiv and Luhansk Oblasts in September. [6]

On December 16, the Office of President Zelenskyy made a press release regarding a meeting with a group of United States military veterans, who handed over equipment and humanitarian aid to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The president's office stated that the equipment, including vehicles, would be provided to the Tavria operational-strategic group and the Khortytsia operational-strategic group. [7] By January 19, the operational-strategic group was, according to President Zelenskyy, deployed in the "hottest" part of the front line. [1]

The battle of Chasiv Yar is an ongoing military engagement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine between the Russian Armed Forces and the Armed Forces of Ukraine for control of the city of Chasiv Yar and surrounding villages. The battle began on 4 April 2024 with the first direct assault on the city by Russian forces, and has thus far seen the confirmed capture of most of the eastern half of the city by Russian forces, while the central and northern parts remain contested.

On 18 July 2024, Russian forces began an offensive with the goal of capturing the strategically important city of Pokrovsk. Pokrovsk serves as an important supply route and as a transportation hub for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Ukrainian soldiers on this part of the front are mostly made of poorly trained conscripts who reportedly had little to no training. Many Ukrainian conscripts had been reported to have deserted over the course of the offensive. The increased level of desertion has resulted in Ukrainian commanders increasing the use of blocking detachments. One Ukrainian commander told CNN that Ukrainian soldiers around Pokrovsk have been given orders to shoot unidentified persons on sight.
