The sport consists of stand up striking and clinch fighting where the objective is to knock an opponent out, force a technical knockout, or win a match by points. The sport was codified in Cambodia by the French colonial administration in the early 20th century and derives from centuries-old traditions, namely Bokator, the close-quarter combat system used during the Khmer empire. An Athletics competition was contested at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar from December 7 to December 12. Twenty-three events were contested for the men while 22 were on the slate for the women. Only the 3000 Meter Steeplechase was not contested for by the women. All track and field events were held at Khalifa International Stadium, and the racewalking and marathon took place at the Doha Corniche. A total of 530 athletes from 41 nations took part in the competition. Bhutan, Brunei, Indonesia and Myanmar were the only nations without a representative in the events.

The Cambodia women's national football team represents Cambodia in international women's football, and is controlled by the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC). the team's first activity was in 2018, where they debuted in the AFF Women's Championship.

At the 2023 SEA Games, Cambodia had its best performance ever, which has been the subject of controversy due to their inclusion of multiple naturalized players on their roster.

Malaysia national under-22 football team represents Malaysia in international football competitions including in the SEA Games of the 2017 edition. It is managed by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). This team was created for the 2013 AFC U-22 Championship qualification, 2017 SEA Games and participated in the 2019 AFF U-22 Youth Championship.

Dancesport competitions at the 2023 SEA Games took place at Chroy Changvar Convention Centre in Phnom Penh on 16 May 2023. Medals were awarded in 2 events.

The hockey competition at the 2023 SEA Games featured two medal events and the competition took place at the Morodok Techo National Stadium, Phnom Penh from 9–16 May 2023.

The Indoor hockey competition at the 2023 SEA Games featured two events and the competitions took place at the Rong Roeung Hall, Phnom Penh, Cambodia from 1–7 May 2023.

Jet ski competitions at the 2023 SEA Games took place at Sokha Beach in Sihanoukville, Cambodia from 13 to 16 May 2023. Medals were awarded in 6 events. Jet ski made its debut competition this edition. The event was commentated by international jet ski racing announcer, Dawn Dawson.
