The Kilmainham Brooch is a late 8th- or early 9th-century Celtic brooch of the "penannular" type (i.e. its ring does not fully close or is incomplete). With a diameter of 9.67 cm, it is a relatively large example, and is made from silver, gold and glass, with filigree and interlace decorations. Like other high-quality brooches of its class, it was probably intended to fasten copes and other vestments rather than for everyday wear, as its precious metal content would have made it a status symbol for its owner; [2] less expensive Viking-style brooches were typically worn in pairs on women's clothing. The brooch is dated to the late 8th or early 9th century based on its 8th-century design patterns, along with the fact that silver was not easily available in Ireland until the first Viking invasion in AD 795. It was found in the 18th century during an excavation of a Viking burial place in Kilmainham, on the fringe of the city of Dublin in Ireland. Although established as being of Irish origin, its form and decorations seem heavily influenced by both Viking art (in material) and earlier Pictish metalwork (in design and technique). It is held at the Kildare Street, Dublin, branch of the National Museum of Ireland, where it is on permanent display in the "Treasury room".

Description

The brooch is classed as penannular as its ring is incomplete (does not fully close). [5] It is made from gold, silver and (mostly red) glass and enamel, [6] and is similar in form and material to the better-known Tara and Hunterston Broochs. [7]

The frame is of cast-silver and contains cells that once held gold spiral filigree and glass inserts, although some of these are now lost. [8] The ring is outlined by double ridges in high relief, with flat areas reserved for decorative elements. Its top contains a wide oval compartment or cell bearing traces of red enamel, while the sides are formed from gold plates bounded by twisted wires and interlace decorations. The ring ends on two quadrilobate terminals (ie consisting of four lobes each), which are formed from a central square surrounded by semi-circular or crescent lobes, three of which are free, while the fourth is shaped and attached to arm of the ring itself. The format of the quartrefoil terminals has been compared to the opening folio for the Gospel of Luke in the c. AD 800 Book of Kells. [9] The overall head is strap-like when viewed in cross-section. The tracery on the curves of the ring is made up of interlaced bodies and legs of zoomorphic animals, including an Irish elk. [10] Most of the original pin head is lost with only its base remaining intact, and also has traces of red enamel. [9] The reverse is mostly flat, but repeats the shape of the oval compartment on the front. It has some interlace designs, including two interlocking dogs. [9]

The brooch's style has been described as of "Ecclesia-Gothio character" with "fine workmanship", and compared to the Tara example although "not so fine". [10] Although described in 1989 as "probably Irish", [11] it contains structural and decorative designs, including its lobed (ie "hanging") terminals, small cusps, and the cartouche on the hoop, are reminiscent of the Pictish-syle, indicating that it may be of Northumbrian origin (unlikely), or at least heavily influenced by that style. [8] [12] [13]

Brooches of this type are the most common and thus studied form of surviving Irish and Scottish medieval metalworks, due both to their then popularity and inherent durability. Examples such as the Kilmainham Brooch were built by skilled craftsmen and their workshops using precious metal, and intended as status symbols for wealthy (and often female) commissioners. [2]

Dating

The Kilmainham Brooch is usually dated to the late 8th or early 9th centuries as it is seen as transitional in both style and material. Its annular form and use of filigree place it in the 8th century Irish tradition, while its use of silver, as opposed to gilding, indicates at earliest an early 9th century origin, that is in the period after the 795 AD Viking invasions of Ireland , when silver became more available to native metalworkers. [14]

Provenance

It was found in the mid-18th century at a late 9th- and early 10th-century Viking burial site at Kilmainham, County Dublin, Ireland, [4] alongside swords and other artifacts of Scandinavian origin or influence. [15] After further excavations in the 21st century, the area of Kilmainham-Islandbridge was described by historian Stephen Harrison as "demonstrably the largest burial complex of its type in western Europe, Scandinavia excluded". [16]

The find spot was near the ruins of a late-medieval hospice run by the Saint John of Jerusalem Order of Templars. [17] [18] Its earliest recorded ownership dates to the late 18th century, when it was in the collection of Ralph Ouseley of County Sligo. [8] Today it is held by the archeology branch of the National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street, Dublin, having been acquired by the Royal Irish Academy before 1853. [18]

Replicas

The mid-19th century copy in Victoria and Albert Museum, London, is from George Waterhouse, a jeweller from Sheffield, England, who moved to Dublin in 1842, and exhibited the Tara and Kilmainham Brooches, and their replicas, at the 1851 Great Exhibition (or "Crystal Palace Exhibition"). [19] [20] An early 20th-century bronze and gilt replica is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. [21] [22] Both were produced during the Celtic Revival when there was high demand for replicas of objects from Ireland's medieval period, particularly from its "Golden Age of Irish Art", roughly AD 700–1200 (especially for metalwork).

Replicas of the brooch were given the "celebrity" title of the "Knight Templar" Brooch to increase saleability as nationalistic shawl-pins (a naming trend also evident in the titling of the Tara Brooch, which was in reality found 28 km (17 mi) from the Hill of Tara, but was at times named the "Royal Tara Brooch". Adolf Mahr later dismissed the trend for giving brooches —and more importantly their replicas— such titles as "fanciful ... and sometimes ridiculous ... by a firm of Dublin jewellers". [23] The V&A acquired its copy at the 1851 Exhibition. [19]

The Tara Brooch is an Irish Celtic brooch, dated to the late-7th or early-8th century, of the pseudo-penannular type. It is made from bronze, silver and gold, with a head formed from a circular ornate ring that is intricately decorated on both sides. Its upper half is hollow while the lower half is solid with fused terminals. The brooch was constructed from numerous individually made pieces, and its front and reverse sides are both decorated with around 50 inserted cast panels containing highly ornate filigree. The borders and terminals contain multiple panels holding multi-coloured studs, interlace patterns, filigree and Celtic spirals. The brooch is widely considered the most complex and ornate of its kind, and would have been commissioned to be worn as a fastener for the cloak of a high ranking cleric or as ceremonial insignia of high office for a High King of Ireland in Irish Early Medieval society.

The Hunterston Brooch is a highly important Celtic brooch of "pseudo-penannular" type found near Hunterston, North Ayrshire, Scotland, in either, according to one account, 1826 by two men from West Kilbride, who were digging drains at the foot of Goldenberry Hill, or in 1830. It is now in the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. Made within a few decades of 700 AD, the Hunterston Brooch is cast in silver, gilt, and set with pieces of amber, and decorated with interlaced animal bodies in gold filigree. The diameter of the ring is 12.2 cm, and in its centre there is a cross and a golden glory representing the Risen Christ, surrounded by tiny bird heads. The pin, which is broken, can travel freely around the ring as far as the terminals, which was necessary for fastening; it is now 13.1 cm long, but was probably originally 15 cm or more.

The Breadalbane Brooch is a silver and gilt Celtic penannular brooch probably made in Ireland, but later altered and then found in Scotland. Probably dating to the 8th century, with 9th-century alterations, it is an intricately designed, silver-gilt dress fastener that is closely related to a select group of brooches that were produced in Ireland and Britain during the 'golden age' of late Celtic art. The brooch has been in the British Museum since 1919, and is normally on display.

The Roscrea brooch is a 9th-century Celtic brooch of the pseudo-penannular type, found at or near Roscrea, County Tipperary, Ireland, before 1829. It is made from cast silver, and decorated with zoomorphic patterns of open-jawed animals and gilded gold filigree, and is 9.5 cm in height and 8.3 cm wide. The silver is of an unusually high quality for Irish metalwork of the period, indicating that its craftsmen were both trading materials with settled Vikings, who had first, traumatically, invaded the island in the preceding century, and had absorbed elements of the Scandinavian's imagery and metalwork techniques.

The Soiscél Molaisse is an Irish cumdach that originated from an 8th-century wooden core embellished in the 11th and 15th centuries with metal plates decorated in the Insular style. Until the late 18th century, the shrine held a now-lost companion text, presumed to be a small illuminated gospel book associated with Saint Laisrén mac Nad Froích, also known as Molaisse or "Mo Laisse". In the 6th century, Molaisse founded a church on Devenish Island in the southern part of Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, with which the cumdach is associated.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">House-shaped shrine</span> Type of portable reliquary in the shape of a house

House-shaped shrine are early medieval portable metal reliquary formed in the shape of the roof of a rectangular building. They originate from both Ireland and Scotland and mostly date from the 8th or 9th centuries. Typical example consist of a wooden core covered with silver and copper alloy plates, and were built to hold relics of saints or martyrs from the early Church era; a number held corporeal remains when found in the modern period, presumably they were parts of the saint's body. Others, including the Breac Maodhóg, held manuscripts associated with the commemorated saint. Like many Insular shrines, they were heavily reworked and embellished in the centuries following their initial construction, often with metal adornments or figures influenced by Romanesque sculpture.

The Shrine of Saint Lachtin's Arm is an early 10th century Irish arm-shrine type reliquary made of wood and metal shaped as an outstretched forearm and clenched fist. St. Lachtin's dates to between 1118 and 1121 and is associated with his church in the village of Stuake, Donoughmore, County Cork, but probably originates from Kilnamartyra, also in Cork. It consists of a yew-wood core lined with decorated bronze and silver plates. The wood at the hand is hollowed out to create a reliquary cavity which once held the arm bone of St. Lachtin, but is now empty. The circular cap at its base contains a large transparent gemstone and is inlayed with silver decorated with filigree.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Clonmacnoise Crozier</span> 11th-century Irish crozier

The Clonmacnoise Crozier is a late-11th-century Insular crozier that would have been used as a ceremonial staff for bishops and mitred abbots. Its origins and medieval provenance are unknown. It was likely discovered in the late 18th or early 19th century in the monastery of Clonmacnoise in County Offaly, Ireland. The crozier has two main parts: a long shaft and a curved crook. Its style reflects elements of Viking art, especially the snake-like animals in figure-of-eight patterns running on the sides of the body of the crook, and the ribbon of dog-like animals in openwork that form the crest at its top. Apart from a shortening to the staff length and the loss of some inserted gems, it is largely intact and is one of the best-preserved surviving pieces of Insular metalwork.

The River Laune Crozier is a late 11th-century Insular crozier, now at the Archaeology branch of the National Museum of Ireland. The object would have been commissioned as a staff of office for a senior clergyman, most likely a bishop. It consists of a wooden core decorated with fitted bronze and silver metal plates. Although the metalwork is somewhat corroded in parts, it is fully intact and considered one of the finest surviving Irish examples, alongside those found at Clonmacnoise and Lismore.
