Krzysztof Kamil Gawkowski (born 11 April 1980) is a Polish politician and writer,who has been serving as a Deputy Prime Minister of Poland and Minister of Digital Affairs since December 2023. [1] [2]
Gawkowski is associated with Democratic Left Alliance,Spring. From November 2019 to December 2023,he was the leader of The Left's parliamentary club. He is a member of the Sejm (10th term). [3]
Gawkowski grew up in Wołomin,Poland. [4] He graduated law at University of Warsaw [5] and in 2006 graduated in political studies at University of Communication and Social Media in Warsaw. He declares he is a Catholic. [6]
As a teenager in the 1990s he was a member of the Young Social Democrats Federation., [7] and at 20,he joined the social-democratic Democratic Left Alliance (SLD),then one of the largest parties in Poland. [1] In 2002 and 2004 he was a councillor in the town of Wołomin,near Warsaw. [1] At the 2010 Polish local elections he was elected at the Masovian Regional Assembly for SLD. [1] The next year he was a candidate for Parliament (Sejm).
In 2016 he was appointed as co-leader of the Democratic Left Alliance. [5] However,after almost twenty years he gave up his affiliation with the Alliance. [8]
In 2019,Gawkowski started to cooperate with Robert Biedroń who headed the newly founded left-wing party Spring. In May he was a candidate to the European Parliament on the Spring list but was not one of the 3 left-wing candidates elected. [9] However,in October of the same year,he was a candidate to the Sejm for the Bydgoszcz constituency in the North-West in the joint electoral alliance The Left between Spring and the SLD,and was elected (see List of 9th term Sejm MPs). He was appointed Leader of the parliamentary club dominated by a majority of SLD MPs,thereby more or less returning to the tent of his old party. In 2021 Spring and SLD merged into the new party New Left.
In the 2023 parliamentary elections he successfully ran for re-election after he received 21,831 votes. [10]
As the two leaders of the party,Włodzimierz Czarzasty and Robert Biedroń,served as Deputy Marshal of the Sejm and European Parliament member,Gawkowski was appointed on 13 December 2023 as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs by Prime Minister Donald Tusk,representing the highest position for his party in Tusk's government. He has written a few poetic and academic books.
Poland has a multi-party political system. On the national level, Poland elects the head of state – the president – and a legislature. There are also various local elections, referendums and elections to the European Parliament.
Presidential elections were held in Poland on 20 June 2010. As no candidate received a majority of votes in the first round, a second round was held on 4 July 2010. Bronisław Komorowski, the acting President of Poland and vice-chairman of the Civic Platform, defeated Jarosław Kaczyński, twin brother of recently deceased President Lech Kaczyński and chairman of Law and Justice. The global financial crisis, flooding in Poland and the Smolensk disaster were the main themes in the last months of the election campaign.
Robert Biedroń is a Polish politician, former mayor of Słupsk, and LGBT activist who has been serving as a Member of the European Parliament since 2019. He is the Chair of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) in the European Parliament.
Warsaw I, officially known as Constituency no. 19, is one of the 41 constituencies of the Sejm, the lower house of the Parliament of Poland, the national legislature of Poland. The constituency was established as Constituency no. 1 in 1991 following the re-organisation of constituencies across Poland. It was renamed Sejm Constituency no. 19 in 2001 following another nationwide re-organisation of constituencies. It is conterminous with the city of Warsaw. Electors living abroad or working aboard ships and oil rigs are included in this constituency. The constituency currently elects 20 of the 460 members of the Sejm using the open party-list proportional representation electoral system. At the 2023 parliamentary election it had 1,993,723 registered electors.
Krzysztof Adam Matyjaszczyk is a Polish politician, Member of the Polish Parliament (2007-2010), local official, since 2010 president of Częstochowa.
Spring was a social-liberal and pro-European political party in Poland led by a former mayor of Słupsk, Robert Biedroń.
The European Coalition was a short-lived electoral alliance and list in Poland. It was established on the verge of 2019 European Parliament election by a group of former prime ministers and former foreign ministers, including Jerzy Buzek, Ewa Kopacz, Grzegorz Schetyna and Radosław Sikorski. They declared the will to construct "one broad list in European Parliament election, the aim of which would be to restore Poland's strong position in the European Union". The Coalition is to be pro-European and centrist.
Włodzimierz Czarzasty is a Polish politician who serves as the co-chairperson of the New Left party. He has been serving as a Deputy Marshal of the Sejm since 12 November 2019.
Anna Maria Żukowska is a Polish politician and jurist. Since 2019, she has been a member of the Sejm of Poland, representing Constituency no. 19, which consists of the city of Warsaw. She is a member of the New Left party and leader of The Left's parliamentary club.
Zdzisław Wolski is a doctor and politician, councilor of Częstochowa (1994–2019) and chairman of its city council (2011–2019), member of the 9th term Sejm of the Republic of Poland (2019–2023).

Presidential elections will be held in Poland by 18 May 2025. They can be held earlier, should the office become vacated as a result of death, resignation or removal from office of the incumbent. Due to constitutional term limits allowing a president to serve only two terms, incumbent president Andrzej Duda is ineligible for re-election. Presidential elections in Poland must take place on a free day between 75 and 100 days before the term's end.
The New Left is a social-democratic political party in Poland. It is positioned on the centre-left on the political spectrum. Its leaders are Włodzimierz Czarzasty and Robert Biedroń.
