La Luz is an American rock band from Seattle, founded in 2012 by Shana Cleveland, Marian Li Pino, Alice Sandahl, and Abbey Blackwell. La Luz has received critical acclaim following the release of four studio albums on Hardly Art: It's Alive , Weirdo Shrine , [1] Floating Features , [2] and the self-titled La Luz. [3]

La Luz is known for their "surf noir" style, with layered vocal harmonies. [4] Their energetic live shows often include Soul Train –inspired dance contests and crowd surfing. [5]

Shana Cleveland and Marian Li Pino (former members of Seattle band The Curious Mystery) formed La Luz in Seattle, Washington, with Alice Sandahl and bassist Abbey Blackwell after being inspired by surf and rock and roll acts like Link Wray, The Ventures, and Dick Dale, as well as girl groups like The Shirelles. [6] [7] The band name comes from the Spanish for "the light". [8] Cleveland has cited Japanese guitar player Takeshi Terauchi as her biggest guitar influence. [9] After releasing an EP titled Damp Face in 2012, La Luz signed with Hardly Art. They released their first full-length album, It's Alive, on Hardly Art in October 2013.

On tour supporting of Montreal, La Luz was involved in a serious automobile accident on November 5, 2013, while traveling from Boise, Idaho, to Seattle, when their tour van slipped on black ice. After crashing into a highway divider, the van was hit by a semi-trailer truck. [10] Band members sustained injuries, and all of the instruments and merchandise were destroyed with the tour van and trailer, forcing them to cancel the remainder of the tour. [11]

In February 2014, bassist Abbey Blackwell left the group, [12] and was replaced by Lena Simon. [13] In August 2015, La Luz released their second album, Weirdo Shrine , again through Hardly Art. Produced by Ty Segall, the album was more live-sounding than previous efforts, and featured heavy fuzz guitar. [14] [15] [16] Weirdo Shrine received positive reviews in The Guardian , Pitchfork , [17] [18] and The New York Times , and the group embarked on an international tour to support its release. They moved from Seattle to Los Angeles later that year. [19] [20] In February 2024, Alice Sandahl announced her departure from the band [21] and that she was being replaced by musician and producer Maryam Qudus, who has previously performed under the name Spacemoth. [22]

Emmett Kelly is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist. He is the primary songwriter and recording artist of The Cairo Gang, one half of The Double alongside drummer Jim White, one third of The CIA and a founding member of Clinamen. He has contributed vocal and instrumental work to a variety of international musical projects, appearing on recordings by the likes of Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Ty Segall, Angel Olsen, Azita, Joan of Arc, Edith Frost, Women and Children, John Webster Johns, Jeff Harms, Chicago poet/singer Marvin Tate, Matteah Baim, Japanese musician Takuma Watanabe, Earth Girl Helen Brown, Joshua Abrams and Rob Mazurek. Kelly has toured in several of the aforementioned acts in addition to with Baby Dee, CFM, Mikal Cronin, Sonny Smith, Beth Orton, and Terry Reid; and in other instances, performed live with Chan Marshall, Scott Tuma, Joan of Arc, and Pillars and Tongues. Michael "Mikal" Patrick Cronin is an American musician and songwriter. He has released four solo albums and several singles. Cronin was a member of the bands Okie Dokie, Epsilons, Party Fowl and Moonhearts, and is a regular and longtime member of Ty Segall's live band, contributing bass guitar, backing vocals and saxophone; he has also released an album and a single in collaboration with Segall. Cronin earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in music from California Institute of the Arts.

The two-disc set contains every single released by the band in the United Kingdom, with the exceptions of: "A Legal Matter" and "La-La-La-Lies" from 1966; and "Long Live Rock" and the remake of "I'm One" from 1979. The Moonhearts, also referred to as Charlie and The Moonhearts as well as Moonhearts, are a three-piece surf punk and garage rock band formed in Laguna Beach, California, in 2006. Both drummer, Charles Moothart and bassist/vocalist Mikal Cronin are known for their collaborations with Ty Segall, as well as members of Segall's backing band, The Ty Segall Band. In 2009 while touring with Ty Segall, The Moonhearts signed with Trouble in Mind Records. Since 2006 the group has released two EP's, Drop in Drop Out, and I Think You're Swell. As well as three albums, Moonhearts, a split LP with Teen Anger referred to as Charlie and The Moonhearts / Teen Anger, or simply Split LP, Thunder Beast and their debut self title, Charlie and The Moonhearts.

<i>Director</i> (Yonatan Gat album) 2015 studio album by Yonatan Gat

Director is Yonatan Gat's debut full-length studio-album released in 2015 on Joyful Noise Recordings. Gal Lazer plays drums, and Sergio Sayeg is on bass. The album was recorded live by Chris Woodhouse in less than 3 days during a US tour. According to Gat, the band went into the studio with just a few songs and ideas. Though effectively composed of "hours upon hours" of mixed-down, in-studio improvisations spliced together with field recordings that Gat had taken during his travels, the album's sound takes its inspiration from soundtrack virtuosos like Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota.
