The Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition or Lachs Space Moot is a space law moot competition organised by the International Institute of Space Law. The competition is named after Manfred Lachs, a former judge of the International Court of Justice. It is the oldest student competition in the area of space law, with the first edition of the moot taking place in 1993.

As the class-leading moot in its field and given its scale, the Lachs Moot is considered one of the major or grand slam moots. [4] [5] In 2011, another space law moot came about, organised by the International Air & Space Law Academy. [6] It is a different moot that is much smaller in scale, [7] and has since become defunct.

To date, five regional competitions have been held for the Lachs Moot—Africa (introduced in 2012), Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America (introduced in 2021), and North America—with the winners of each region proceeding to the world or international finals at a venue that changes every year (depending on where the International Astronautical Congress is held); the world championship round is typically judged by three sitting ICJ judges. [8] [9] For a period of time, the regional and world rounds were held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In each oral round of the moot there is an applicant and a respondent, and each side is represented by two counsel. Each team also has to submit written memorials for both sides. These memorials are re-evaluated during the world rounds.

The International Criminal Court Moot Court Competition or ICCMCC is an annual international moot court competition on international criminal law that is held at The Hague and organised by the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies of Leiden University, The Hague Campus, with the institutional support of the International Criminal Court and International Bar Association. Pace Law School had conceived of the moot as an in-class exercise in 2004, and it was in 2005 that a domestic competition was started. The competition became international the following year, with the finals being held in 2007. With sometimes more than 100 teams from 50 countries taking part annually, the ICCMCC is the world's largest competition on international criminal law and is considered one of the grand slam or major moots. The competition has been held in various languages thus far; in addition to English, there are also Chinese, Spanish, French, and Russian editions of the competition.

Professor (Dr.) Srikrishna Deva Rao is the Vice Chancellor of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad and a teacher and scholar in criminal law and access to justice.

Ruvimbo Samanga is a Space Policy Analyst and sits on the Board of the Space Arbitration Assocciation. Ruvimbo has supported a number of international initiatives in policy, business, outreach, and education geared towards the advancement of space and satellite applications for sustainable development. She currently serves as an Ambassador for the MILO Space Science Institute, and previously served a 2-year term as the National Point of Contact for Zimbabwe in the Space Generation Advisory Council, the latter which is in support of the United Nations Program on Space Applications.

The Leiden – Sarin International Air Law Moot Court Competition is an international moot competition organised by Leiden University. It was started in 2010 by the university's International Institute of Air and Space Law and by India's Sarin Memorial Legal-Aid Foundation, the legal aid arm of Sarin & Co. The mock aviation law proceedings are before the International Court of Justice. The international rounds of the competition comprise a mix of teams that proceed directly and teams that have qualified from the national rounds. Two preliminary rounds are held to determine the best applicant and respondent sides, who would then face off in the championship final. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 edition only awarded memorial prizes, while the 2021 edition was held online.

Géza Herczegh was a Hungarian judge and academic. In 1990, Herczegh was appointed to the Constitutional Court of Hungary. From 1993 to 2003, he was unanimously elected by the United Nations to one of the International Court of Justice, succeeding Manfred Lachs. He filled the remaining year of Lachs' nine-year term and was re-elected to a full term in 1994. In 2003, he was succeeded by Peter Tomka. His daughter, Judge Anita Herczegh, is married to János Áder, former President of Hungary. His successor at the ICJ, Tomka, described him as "a dedicated and open-minded judge interested in finding areas of consensus."
