The Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court Competition or Lachs Space Moot is a space law moot competition organised by the International Institute of Space Law. The competition is named after Manfred Lachs, a former judge of the International Court of Justice. It is the oldest student competition in the area of space law, with the first edition of the moot taking place in 1993. In recent years the moot has been held during the International Astronautical Congress and Colloquium of the IISL.

As the class-leading moot in its field and given its scale, the Lachs Moot is considered one of the major or grand slam moots. [4] [5] In 2011, another space law moot came about, organised by the International Air & Space Law Academy. [6] It is a different moot that is much smaller in scale, [7] and has since become defunct.

In addition to national rounds for certain coutries, five regional competitions have been held for the Lachs Moot to date—Africa (introduced in 2012), Asia-Pacific, Europe, Latin America (introduced in 2021), and North America—with the winners of each region proceeding to the world or international finals at a venue that changes every year (depending on where the International Astronautical Congress is held); the world championship round is typically judged by three sitting ICJ judges. [8] [9] For a period of time, the regional and world rounds were held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In each oral round of the moot there is an applicant and a respondent, and each side is represented by two counsel (of counsel cannot be seated together). Each team also has to submit written memorials for both sides. These memorials are re-evaluated during the world rounds.

The African Human Rights Moot Court Competition is an international moot court competition with a special focus on human rights in Africa. The competition is organised by the Centre for Human Rights, based at the University of Pretoria Faculty of Law in South Africa. Each year, the competition is hosted by a Law Faculty from a different African country. Since its inception in 1992, the competition has had 845 participant teams originating from 125 universities from 45 African countries.

The Price Media Law Moot Court Competition or Price Moot in short, is an annual international moot court competition. Described as a competition "for raising the profile of freedom of expression by bringing informed and effective debate and discussion on significant issues of information flows and technology to many parts of the world", the Price Moot focuses on international media law and related human rights such as freedom of expression, freedom of religion, freedom of association, and various facets of privacy. The Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Court or Frankfurt Moot is a moot competition co-organised by the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. It is the oldest student competition in the area of investment arbitration, with the first edition of the moot taking place in 2008. As the class-leading moot in its field, it is considered one of the grand slam or major moots. With the exception of India and China, national rounds are not conducted, but each university may only send one team, unlike the Foreign Direct Investment Moot. Like many other arbitration moots, pre-moots are also conducted by institutions such as the International Chamber of Commerce, HKIAC, and European Court of Arbitration.

The Leiden – Sarin International Air Law Moot Court Competition is an international moot competition organised by Leiden University. It was started in 2010 by the university's International Institute of Air and Space Law and by India's Sarin Memorial Legal-Aid Foundation, the legal aid arm of Sarin & Co. The mock aviation law proceedings are before the International Court of Justice. The international rounds of the competition comprise a mix of teams that proceed directly and teams that have qualified from the national rounds. Two preliminary rounds are held to determine the best applicant and respondent sides, who would then face off in the championship final. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 edition only awarded memorial prizes, while the 2021 edition was held online.

Géza Herczegh was a Hungarian judge and academic. In 1990, Herczegh was appointed to the Constitutional Court of Hungary. From 1993 to 2003, he was unanimously elected by the United Nations to one of the International Court of Justice, succeeding Manfred Lachs. He filled the remaining year of Lachs' nine-year term and was re-elected to a full term in 1994. In 2003, he was succeeded by Peter Tomka. His daughter, Judge Anita Herczegh, is married to János Áder, former President of Hungary. His successor at the ICJ, Tomka, described him as "a dedicated and open-minded judge interested in finding areas of consensus."
