Kalaivani Nagaraj, also known as Lady Kash, is a rapper, artist, and songwriter from Singapore. [1] She has collaborated with composers including A. R. Rahman, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Anirudh Ravichander, Santhosh Narayanan, Harris Jayaraj, and Thaman S. [2]

Contents

In 2013, Lady Kash established AKASHIK, an independent label and creative company. It offers a range of services including artist and label management, distribution, and publishing, with a specialized focus on the independent music industry. In 2018, she released the bilingual hip-hop song "Villupaattu", [3] which brought the Villu Paatu storytelling form to a wider audience and highlighted the work of artist Poongani Amma. [4] [5]

In 2023, her hip-hop single “Two Cents” was selected for synchronization in Episode 9 of the fourth season of the Netflix comedy-drama series “Never Have I Ever” [6] . The show created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher made her the first artist to bring the Tamizh rap to Hollywood.

Biography

Kalaivani Nagaraj was born in Singapore. As a teenager, she moved to India for her studies. [7] She began her career as a rapper and songwriter in the entertainment industry in 2007. [8]

Professional Career

In 2010, she co-wrote and recorded "Irumbile Oru Irudhaiyam” [9] with A. R. Rahman for the Enthiran film. The soundtrack album reached the top of the iTunes US/UK charts. [10]

She was the youngest and only female rapper to record for the anthem of the World Classical Tamil Conference, Semmozhiyaana Thamizh Mozhiyaam, [11] which became a modern anthem of the Tamil.

In January 2014, Lady Kash made her Bollywood debut with the song "Wanna Mash Up?", composed by A. R. Rahma, for the film Highway. [12]

In July 2016, Lady Kash had two releases, first one was a "m Hai Futsal," the official Premier Futsal anthem composed by A. R. Rahman with vocals by A. R. R., Virat Kohli, Lady Kash, and Karthik. Another one is her rendition of Kabali's "Neruppu Da," which gained over 1 million views in two weeks. The track was powered by AKASHIK in conjunction with Think Music India. [13]

On A. R. Rahman's 50th birthday in 2017, Lady Kash released "Rap Smash," a one-take video medley of rap hits of the composer. She also released a rework of Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow" in support of #MeToo. Since she has focused on original music, releasing "I Told You So" in February 2018 and "Villupaattu" on 29 March 2018. In 2021, she participated in the Tamil edition of the reality show Survivor, filmed in Tanzania, East Africa, and produced by Zee Tamil and Banijay Asia. [15]

Performance History | Concerts & Venues

Lady Kash has performed in Canada, Switzerland, the UK, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Dubai, and India. [16] During A. R. Rahman's 2014 Infinite Love concert tour, she performed "Irumbile Oru Irudhaiyam" with him. Her other concert tours with A. R. Rahman included "Rap War" at A. R. Rahman's Nenje Ezhu concert tour series (Chennai, Coimbator, and& Madurai) in 201, and "Rap War 2.0" at A. R. Rahman Live in Dubaiin 2017.

In 2017, she performed at desiFEST in Yonge-Dundas Square, and twice with Anirudh Ravichander during his concerts in Singapore in 2014 and 2016. [17]
