The LamborghiniLMA002 (Lamborghini Mimran Anteriore 002; Lamborghini, Mimran, front-engined 002 [1] ) was a prototype offroad vehicle designed and built by Lamborghini while the company was headed by the then 26-year-old Patrick Mimran. It was a follow-up to the LM001 and was first presented at the 1982 Geneva Auto Show.

Finally seeing the problems with their initial designs (the Cheetah, and the LM001), Lamborghini decided to move the engine to the front. This required a redesign of the entire chassis. [2] This was also the first time the V12 engine from the Countach was actually used in an offroad vehicle, producing 332 bhp (248 kW; 337 PS) and 314 lb⋅ft (426 N⋅m) of torque, significantly more power than its predecessors. The redesign used a tubular steel spaceframe and increased the overall weight by about 500 kg to 2,600 kg (5,732 lb). [3] Moving the engine also freed up a large amount of space in the rear, which allowed for enough room to fit 6 more passengers, for a total of 11 occupants.

The increased weight required a suspension redesign and the addition of power steering. A five-speed transmission with a hydraulic clutch was used. Also, for the first time the four-wheel-drive capabilities could be turned off, allowing the vehicle to become only rear-wheel drive when desired. The front differential provided a maximum lock of 25 percent, while the rear and center ones could lock up to 75 percent. The center differential could also be fully locked mechanically for the severest off-roading. [1] The body panels were all very straight and flat to facilitate the addition of armor plating, and the entire roof and doors could be removed.

At the time, it was reported that the LMA had won a competition for a Saudi military contract for between 500 and 1000 cars, with Lamborghini increasing its staffing levels by thirty percent in anticipation. [1] This order did not materialize, and only the single LMA002 would be produced. However, after many alterations and adjustments, the design entered series production as the LM002.

Armament

One photo exists of a LMA002 mounting a Oerlikon 25mm type KBA auto cannon, likely a mock-up. [4] This specific armament was fitted on a wide array of military vehicles such as IFVs, APCs, helicopters and naval vessels. The modes of fire are semi-automatic and fully automatic at a rate of fire of 600 rounds per minute. The weapon can fire a wide array of munitions, including APDS and APFSDS rounds.

The Lamborghini LM002 aka "Rambo Lambo" is an off-road vehicle manufactured by Lamborghini between 1986 and 1993. The LM002 was an unusual departure for Lamborghini which, at the time, was primarily known for high-performance, hand-built, super/sports cars. The LM002 was not the first of its kind to be built by Lamborghini. Two prototype vehicles, the Cheetah and the LM001, paved the way for LM002. Both vehicles used rear-mounted American power plants and were intended for military use, but were not well received. With the idea of using a front mounted Countach V12 to power the LM001 came the next model, the "LM002", which was the first of the three to see actual production by Lamborghini. The LM002 is part of a series of vehicles, the Lamborghini Militaria.

The Lamborghini LM003 was a very short-lived offroad prototype project designed and built by Lamborghini in an attempt to meet military needs. It was virtually identical to the LM002, but instead of the V12 Lamborghini engine, it utilized a 5-cylinder, 150 bhp (112 kW), 3.6L turbocharged diesel engine provided by VM Motori. The engine was determined to be entirely insufficient to power the 2600 kg (5700 lb) vehicle and the project was abandoned.

ControlTrac four-wheel drive is the brand name of a selectable automatic full-time four-wheel drive system offered by Ford Motor Company. The four-wheel drive system was designed and developed at BorgWarner under its TorqTransfer Systems division in the mid 1980s. BorgWarner calls the system Torque-On-Demand (TOD). ControlTrac was the first automatic system to use software control and no planetary or bevel geared center differential. Instead of a planetary or bevel geared center differential, the system uses a variable intelligent locking center multi-disc differential.

The Lamborghini Militaria were a series of off-road utility trucks produced by automotive manufacturer Lamborghini. It was started as an attempt at the military light utility truck market. The vehicles in the series are greatly reminiscent of the FMC XR311, and is in turn reminiscent of the Humvee. The series expanded into the luxury sport utility market, and its primary production run was the Lamborghini LM002, which sold over 300 units. It is considered the pioneer of the luxury sport utility market, all other comparable vehicles being utility rather than luxury. This chassis family existed from 1977 through 1993.
