Liga Nasional (English: National League or Malaysia National League) was an amateur football league in Malaysia. It was established in 1992 as amateur competition for the football club to compete in Malaysian football league system. [1]

The sport of football in the country of Malaysia is run by the Football Association of Malaysia. The association administers the national football team as well as the national league.

History

Founding

A football league competition involving the representative sides of the state football association was first held in Malaysia in 1979. When it began, it was intended primarily as a qualifying tournament for the final knock-out stages of the Malaysia Cup. It was not until 1982 that a League Cup was introduced to recognise the winners of the preliminary stage as the league champions. Over the years, the league competition has gained important stature in its own right. [3]

Malaysia Cup

The Malaysia Cup, also known as the unifi Piala Malaysia due to sponsorship reasons, is an annual association football tournament in Malaysia. The cup was first held in 1921. Even though it is the nation's oldest cup tournament, it is currently a secondary cup to the Malaysia FA Cup as the Malaysia FA Cup is the cup which is given the nation's slot for continental cup tournament. The competition was previously managed by Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) before it was transferred to Football Malaysia LLP (FMLLP) in the 2016 season.

In association football, a League Cup or Secondary Cup generally signifies a cup competition for which entry is restricted only to teams in a particular league. The first national association football tournament to be called "League Cup" was held in Scotland in 1946–47 and was entitled the Scottish League Cup. However, in the Republic of Ireland the now defunct League of Ireland Shield was the first national league-only tournament of its kind; this was subsequently replaced by the League of Ireland Cup in 1983.

Initially the only teams allowed to participate in the league were the state FA's sides, teams representing the Military of Malaysia, the Royal Malaysian Police, and teams representing the neighbouring countries of Singapore and Brunei (though the Football Association of Singapore pulled out of the Malaysian League after the 1994 season following a dispute with the Football Association of Malaysia over gate receipts, and has not been involved since).

Apart from its coastline with the South China Sea, the country is completely surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak. It is separated into two parts by the Sarawak district of Limbang. Brunei is the only sovereign state completely on the island of Borneo; the remainder of the island's territory is divided between the nations of Malaysia and Indonesia. Brunei's population was 423,196 in 2016.

Football Association of Singapore

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) is the governing body of football in Singapore. It was founded as the Singapore Amateur Football Association in 1892, which lays claim to being the oldest Football Association in Asia. The football association underwent a name change to its current name on 13 January 1966.

In 1992, FAM created another amateur league for local clubs in Malaysia to compete in, called the National League Liga Nasional in Malay) [1] The league was managed by FAM outside entity, Super Club Sdn. Bhd. Some of the clubs which compete in the league are Hong Chin, Muar FA, PKNK from Kedah, DBKL, PKNS, BSN, LPN, BBMB, Proton, PPC and PKENJ. [1] Unfortunately, the league only ran for a one season before it folded. [2] Some of the clubs were then evolved and joined the main league, such as PKENJ, which became JCorp and now as JDT.

The FAM Cup is the knock-out tournament for the clubs/teams in Liga M3 and Liga M4 in Malaysia. The tournament is currently a cup format, but from 2008 to 2018 it was held as a league tournament and used the name FAM League.

MP Muar F.C.

Majlis Perbandaran Muar Football Club or MP Muar was a Malaysian football club based in Muar, Johor. The club home ground is the Sultan Ibrahim Mini Stadium in Muar. The club formerly played in the Malaysia Premier League, the second tier of the Malaysian League from 2010 to 2012. Under new direction of Johor Football Association (JFA), all clubs from Johor including MP Muar has pulled from Malaysian League at the end of 2012 season and later joining State League, the PBNJ State League.

For 2016–17 season, there are a total of 108 clubs participated in the league to represent their district out of more than 150 possible districts in the country to play in the league.
