Lightening Pearl (foaled 15 February 2009) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from June 2011 and June 2012 she won three of her seven races. As a two-year-old she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Britain and Ireland, finishing third in the Debutante Stakes before winning the Round Tower Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes. She failed to reproduce her best form in two races as a three-year-old and was retired from racing.

Background

Lightening Pearl is a dark bay mare with a small white star and a white sock on her left hind leg [2] bred in Ireland by Castlemartin Stud & Skymarc Farm (Tony O'Reilly and his wife Chryss). [3] Her sire Marju won the St James's Palace Stakes and finished second in The Derby in 1991 before being retired to stud. The best of his other progeny included Viva Pataca, Soviet Song and Indigenous. [4] Lightening Pearl's dam Jioconda showed good form as a racemare in Ireland, winning two of her eight races including the Listed Silken Glider Stakes in 2005. [5] She was a descendant of Pato, a mare whose other progeny included My Emma and Classic Cliche. [6] Jioconda also produced Lightening Pearl's full brother Satono Crown.

In September 2010, the filly was consigned to the Goffs sale and was bought for €125,000 by Redvers [7] on behalf of Fahad bin Abdulla Al Thani's Pearl Bloodstock Ltd. [8] She was sent into training with Ger Lyons at Dunsany, County Meath.

Racing career

2011: two-year-old season

Lightening Pearl made her racecourse debut in a six furlong maiden race at Navan Racecourse on 15 June 2011. Ridden by Keagan Latham, she started a 16/1 outsider she stayed on in the closing stages to finish second of the eight runners behind the odds-on favourite Experience. On 4 July the filly started second favourite for a similar event at Roscommon Racecourse in which she was ridden for the first time by Johnny Murtagh. She took the lead soon after the start and kept on well to win by two lengths from the favorite Catamount. [9] Lightening Pearl was moved up in class for the Group Two Debutante Stakes at the Curragh on 7 August. Ridden by Latham, the filly started at odds of 16/1 and finished third of the nine runners behind Maybe and the Dermot Weld-trained Yellow Rosebud. Murtagh resumed the ride three weeks later when the filly started 6/4 favourite for the Group Three Round Tower over the same course and distance. Lightening Pearl tracked the outsider Lady Pastrane before taking the lead two furlongs from the finish and drew away in the closing stages to win easily by five lengths from Experience. [10] After the race Lyons said "She ran a great race last time when she was unlucky not to be second", Lyons said. "She was beaten by a very good filly that day and I think the fillies are better than the colts this year. She has done all we've asked of her". [11]

On her final appearance of the year Lightening Pearl was sent to England to contest the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes over si furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse on 24 September. As she had not been one of the original entries her owner paid a £15,000 supplementary fee to run her in the race. [12] The Richard Hannon-trained Best Terms started the 11/8 favourite after wins in the Queen Mary Stakes and the Lowther Stakes with Lightening Pearl, ridden by Murtagh, next in the betting on 3/1. The other seven runners included Shumoos (Sirenia Stakes), Sajwah (Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes), Angels Will Fall (Princess Margaret Stakes) and Miss Work of Art (Marygate Fillies' Stakes). Lightening Pearl tracked the leader Sajwah before taking the lead a quarter of a mile from the finish and went clear of her rivals entering the final furlongs. She held on the closing stages to win by half a length from the 33/1 outsider Sunday Times with Angels Will Fall in third. [13] Her victory gave both her owner and trainer their first success at Group One level. Johnny Murtagh commented "From day one I always knew she was good. She won her maiden well and maybe the key was running over six furlongs. I always thought she was a mile seven-furlong filly, but she had the race won a long way out". [14]

2012: three-year-old season

On her first appearance as a three-year-old, Lightening Pearl returned to Newmarket for the 199th running of the 1000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile on 6 May. Starting a 20/1 outsider she chased the leaders and reached second place three furlongs out but soon began to struggle and was eased down by Murtagh to finish thirteenth of the sixteen runners behind Homecoming Queen. On June 14 the filly was dropped in class and distance for the Group Three Ballyogan Stakes over six furlongs at Leopardstown Racecourse. She started 4/1 second favourite but never looked likely to win and finished sixth of the nine runners behind Fire Lily. [15] On the following day it was announced that Lightening Pearl had been retired from racing. Lyons said "She is a Group 1 winner and owes us nothing. I'm delighted to have trained her and I hope her progeny are as good. She just wasn't firing this year in the way she did last season. She didn't grow over the winter and we've accepted that she hasn't trained on". [16]

Maybe is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She was undefeated in five races in 2011 including the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes and was awarded the title of European Champion Two-Year-Old Filly of 2011 at the Cartier Racing Awards. She was the winter favourite for the 2012 1000 Guineas.

He later became a very successful sire: his progeny have included the Cartier Champion Sprinter Sole Power.

Pass the Peace was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best two-year-old fillies of her generation in Britain and Ireland in 1988, when she won four races including the Debutante Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes. After winning the Fred Darling Stakes on her three-year-old debut she failed to win again, although she was placed in both the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and the Sun Chariot Stakes. She later became a successful broodmare.

Regal Rose is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was undefeated in a brief racing career which consisted of two races as a two-year-old in the summer and autumn of 2000. After winning a maiden race at Ascot Racecourse on her debut she defeated twelve opponents to take the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes in September. She remained in training in 2001 but suffered a leg injury in spring and was retired later that year without contesting another race. She has had some success as a broodmare.

Donna Blini is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best juvenile fillies of her generation in Britain in 2005 when she won three of her four races including the Cherry Hinton Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she was mainly campaigned in sprint races and won one minor race from seven starts. She was retired from racing having won four of her eleven races and exported to become a broodmare in Japan. She made an immediate impact as a dam of winners, producing the outstanding racemare Gentildonna.

Serious Attitude Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Serious Attitude was an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. A specialist sprinter, she won five of her twelve races in a racing career which lasted from August 2008 until October 2010. As a two-year-old in 2008 she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Britain, winning all three of her races including the Dick Poole Fillies' Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she disappointed in the 1000 Guineas, but won the Summer Stakes before her season was ended by injuries sustained in the Prix Maurice de Gheest. As a four-year-old she struggled to find her best form and was beaten in her first five races, before being sent to Canada where she ended her career with a win in the Nearctic Stakes. At the end of the year she was sold and exported to become a broodmare in Japan.

Hooray is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred and owned by the Cheveley Park Stud she won five of her thirteen races in a racing career which lasted from June 2010 until October 2011. In 2010 she was rated the best filly of her age in Europe when she won the Lowther Stakes, the Sirenia Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes. She was not so successful as a three-year-old, recording her only success in the Surrey Stakes. At the end of the year she returned to Cheveley Park to become a broodmare and produced her first foal in 2013.

Rosdhu Queen Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Rosdhu Queen is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 2012 until August 2013 she won four of her eight races. As a two-year-old in 2012 she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Britain, winning all four of her races including the St Hugh's Stakes, Lowther Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes. She failed to win in 2013 but finished fourth in the Fred Darling Stakes and produced arguably her best effort when finishing fifth in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. At the end of her racing career she was sold to become a broodmare for the Coolmore Stud.

Vorda is a French Thoroughbred racehorse and prospective broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from April 2013 until October 2014 she won four of her eleven races. After being bought cheaply as a yearling she was one of the best juvenile fillies in Europe in 2013. In France she won the Prix La Flèche and the Prix Robert Papin as well as finishing second in the Prix Morny before being sent to England to record her biggest victory in the Cheveley Park Stakes. She failed to win as a three-year-old but ran well in several major races before being retired at the end of the season.

Red Bloom is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 2003 until October 2006 she ran nineteen times, competing in four different countries and won six times as well as being placed on seven occasions. As a juvenile she graduated from a maiden race victory to record her biggest success in the Group One Fillies' Mile. In the following year she was the beaten favourite for the 1000 Guineas but won the Strensall Stakes. She remained in training for two more seasons, winning the Pipalong Stakes and two editions of the Blandford Stakes. Apart from her wins, she reached the frame in the Coronation Stakes, Pretty Polly Stakes, Nassau Stakes and Prix Jean Romanet. At the end of her racing career she became broodmare for her owner, the Cheveley Park Stud.

Alice Springs (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Alice Springs is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2015 she failed to win a group race but showed consistently high-class form, winning a valuable sales race, finishing second in the Silver Flash Stakes and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, third in the Moyglare Stud Stakes and fourth in the Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she was beaten in her first four races but finished third in both the 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. She then won three Group One races in her next four starts taking the Falmouth Stakes, Matron Stakes and Sun Chariot Stakes.

Brave Anna American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Brave Anna is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2016 she was rated the joint-best filly of her generation trained in Europe, inferior only to the American filly Lady Aurelia. After running moderately on her racecourse debut she won a maiden race before taking the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. She was unplaced in her next two races before ending her season with a win in the Cheveley Park Stakes.

Clemmie Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Clemmie is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2017 she was beaten in her first two races but then won the Grangecon Stud Stakes, Duchess of Cambridge Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes, ending the year as the highest-rated juvenile filly in Europe. Pretty Pollyanna British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Pretty Pollyanna is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2018 she was one of the best fillies of her generation in Europe, winning the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes and the Prix Morny.

Chorist was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was a consistent performer at eight to ten furlongs who improved through her four seasons on the track. After running unplaced on her only start as a two-year-old she won four races including the Upavon Fillies' Stakes as a three-year-old in 2002. She improved in the following year when she took the Hoppings Stakes, Golden Daffodil Stakes and Blandford Stakes. At the age of five in 2004 she reached her peak with wins in the Pipalong Stakes and Pretty Polly Stakes as well as finishing second in the Champion Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare.

Millisle is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. Champers Elysees is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed modest racing ability as a juvenile in 2019 when she won one minor race from five attempts. In the following year she made rapid progress, winning her first four races including the Corrib Fillies Stakes, Fairy Bridge Stakes and Matron Stakes.
