Tommy Cook is officially recognised by the club as their top scorer, with 123 goals scored in 209 appearances between 1922 and 1929. [7]

Bert Stephens scored 174 goals between 1935 and 1948, however only 87 of these were scored in competitive matches. The remainder were scored during wartime fixtures when competitive football was suspended. [8] [9]

The history of Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. began in 1901. It first played in the Southern League, and was elected to the Football League in 1920. They won promotion to the First Division in the 1978–79 season, but were relegated in the 1982–83 season. They returned to the top flight for the 2017–18 season playing in the Premier League.

The 1991 Football League Second Division play-off final was an association football match which was played on 2 June 1991 at Wembley Stadium, London, between Brighton & Hove Albion and Notts County. The match was to determine the third and final team to gain promotion from the Football League Second Division, the second tier of English football, to the First Division. The top three teams of the 1990–91 Football League Second Division season gained automatic promotion to the First Division, while the clubs placed from fourth to seventh place in the table took part in play-off semi-finals; Notts County ended the season in fourth position, two places ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion. The winners of these semi-finals competed for the final place for the 1991–92 season in the First Division. Middlesbrough and Millwall were the losing semi-finalists.

Brighton finished the season in ninth, their highest ever finish in the top flight.

The 2022–23 season was the 121st season in the existence of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club and the club's sixth consecutive season in the Premier League. In addition to the league, they also competed in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.
