Persepolis Football Club is an Iranian professional association football club based in Tehran. The club was formed in 1963, and played its first competitive match against Rah Ahan F.C. Persepolis currently plays in the Persian Gulf Pro League. Persepolis is the only club, never to have been relegated from the league. They have also been involved in Asian football, winning the Asian Cup Winners' Cup.

Farshad Pious is an Iranian retired footballer who played as a forward for a number of clubs in Iran, most notably Persepolis, as well as the Iran national team. He is regarded as one of the best players in the history of Iranian football. He helped Persepolis win their only ever Asian Cup Winners' Cup in 1991 and also led them to a runners-up finish the following year. Pious was named the Iranian Football League top scorer on seven occasions. He is also Persepolis' greatest ever scorer with 153 goals in 211 games.

The 2012–13 season was Persepolis's 12th season in the Pro League, and their 30th consecutive season in the top division of Iranian Football. They competed in the Hazfi Cup. Persepolis saw a change in managerial role in the beginning of the season when Mustafa Denizli announced via an open letter to the fans that he couldn't cooperate with Perspolis anymore due to his personal problems and was replaced with former Al Ahly boss Manuel José. Persepolis is captained by Mehdi Mahdavikia.

The 2012–13 Persian Gulf Cup was the 30th season of Iran's Football League and 12th as Iran Pro League since its establishment in 2001. Sepahan were the defending champions. The season featured 15 teams from the 2011–12 Persian Gulf Cup and three new teams promoted from the 2011–12 Azadegan League: Paykan as champions, Aluminium Hormozgan and Gahar Zagros. The league started on 19 July 2012 and ended on 10 May 2013. Esteghlal won the Pro League title for the third time in their history.

The 2013–14 season was the Persepolis's 13th season in the Pro League, and their 31st consecutive season in the top division of Iranian Football. They were also competing in the Hazfi Cup but were eliminated by Foolad in Quarter-finals. Persepolis was captained by Mohammad Nouri.

The league started on 30 July 2015 and ended on 13 May 2016. Esteghlal Khuzestan won the Pro League title for the first time in their history. Mehdi Taremi of Persepolis was the top scorer with 16 goals.

The 2001–02 season was the Persepolis's 1st season in the Pro League, and their 19th consecutive season in the top division of Iranian Football. They were also competing in the Hazfi Cup. Persepolis was captained by Afshin Peyrovani.

The rivalry between Persepolis and Tractor is a footballing rivalry played between Iranian clubs Persepolis and Tractor.
