Speedrun records

Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Bros. was released in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and it has become one of the most popular speedrunning games mainly due to its short length and incredible precision. The fastest times are under 5 minutes long, with the 'warpless' times being under 20 minutes.

After achieving a new record time of 4:57.627 in 2015, speedrunner darbian noted that this "still wasn't perfect", although he went on to say: "There is no other time save that a human has ever done (even in practice) prior to [level] 8-4." [5] He went on to beat his record first by 0.2 seconds and then by another 0.167 seconds in 2016. After that, he announced that he would not try to improve his time further, as he claimed he had reached his potential in the category. [6] However, the discovery of a new method of performing a "flagpole glitch" resulted in Kosmic and darbian both breaking the record within a week, ending with a time of 4:56.878. [7] Darbian further improved the record in 2017 [8] before the record swapped hands several more times in 2018, [9] [10] with speedrunner somewes eventually getting a time of 4:55.796 in October 2018. In August 2019, runner tavenwebb2002 became the world record holder with a time of 4:55.746, [11] a 3-frame improvement of the former world record. On 17 January 2020, Kosmic reclaimed the Any% record with a time of 4:55.646.

GTAce99 holds the world record for beating Super Mario Bros. without using warps. His record stands at 18:59.008, set on 18 August 2020. [2]

A Tool-assisted speedrun (also known commonly as TAS), is a speedrun of a game in an emulator with the goal of creating a theoretically perfect playthrough. As the name implies, a tool-assisted speedrun is performed by a human being using an emulator or other piece of software that aids in frame-perfect optimized inputs to complete the game in the fastest way possible. Although that specific set of inputs may technically be possible for a speedrunner to perform, human error makes this practically impossible. The fastest tool-assisted speedrun of Super Mario Bros., created by runner HappyLee, completed the game in 4:54.032. [12]

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (known as Super Mario Bros. 2 in Japan) was the Japanese-exclusive sequel to the then-popular Super Mario Bros. Known for its difficulty, the game avoided an American release due to its challenging levels. The American market would receive Super Mario Bros. 2 , a redesign of another Japanese game.

The record for The Lost Levels (including shortcuts) is 7:55.317 by Tecate. [13] The record without using warps is 21:38.280 by Kosmic. [14] [15]

Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 2 was released in 1988 in the United States and in 1992 in Japan as Super Mario USA. It is the third best selling Nintendo Entertainment System title.

The current speedrun record of Super Mario Bros. 2 is held by COOLKID, who beat the game in 8:17 on 3 November 2019. [16] The "All Levels" category record is currently held by IluvMario at 20:59. [17]

Super Mario Bros. 3

Super Mario Bros. 3 is the final main Super Mario title on the NES. Released in 1990, the game is considered to be one of the best video games of all time.

The current record of Super Mario Bros. 3 without using any shortcuts is held by Mitchflowerpower, who beat the game in 50:30. [23]

On 30 April 2014, Lord Tom and Tompa completed Super Mario Bros. 3 in a tool-assisted speedrun in under three minutes by using a memory corruption glitch, [24] named the "credits warp." The current world record using this glitch is 3:02.950 by Zikubi. [25]

Game Boy titles

On 6 June 2016, callumbal beat Super Mario Land , the first Mario game on the Game Boy, in 12:28. [28] [29] [30] The current world record is 12:25, also held by callumbal. [31]

Super Mario Land's sequel, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins , has the record as 2:42.950 by runner Oh_DeeR with glitches. [32] The larger category is Any% Glitchless, where no glitches are allowed. The world record is held by AdamFerrari64 with a time of 26:16.400. [33]

Super Mario World

In 1991, Super Mario World was released as a pack-in game for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The current 11 Exit [Note 1] record of Super Mario World (1991) is held by speedrunner LostC0re, who completed the game in 9:43.750 in September 2019, [34] with the runners-up being GreenDeathFlavor and Area51, who hold a time of 09:44.367 [35] and 09:45.283, [36] respectively. On 10 February 2018, speedrunner katun24 beat Super Mario World in 12:25 while blindfolded. [37]

The current 96 Exit [Note 2] speedrun record of Super Mario World is held by speedrunner Lui, who completed the game in 1:21:44.040 in August 2020. [38]

For Any%, [Note 3] also known as 0 Exit, it is possible to make the credits of Super Mario World roll by injecting arbitrary code into the game's memory in the second level of the game. The speedruns use Super Multitap devices. [39] Jeffw356 was first to execute the glitch on an emulator, and SethBling was first to execute it on console, legitimizing Jeffw356's speedrun by proving the glitch is possible outside an emulator. [40] [41] The current world record for this category was set by FURiOUS in June 2020 with a time of 0:41.02. [42]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

The 1995 sequel to Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island , is a popular game at the speedrunning charity marathon Games Done Quick. [98] Its current 100% [Note 4] completion speedrunning record is held by runner saku_ghd with a run time of 2:21:28. [99] For speedruns using a credits warp, the world record is 2:19.217 by Poahr. [100] The world record in the Warps category is held by saku_ghd with a time of 1:35:43. [101] The Warpless category is only a few minutes longer, with saku_ghd also achieving a world record time of 1:40:57. [102]

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

The most popular category in Super Mario RPG is Any%, and the current record was obtained on 7 June 2020 by Justin-credible at 2:46:24. [103]

Super Mario 64

Super Mario 64 was released in 1996 as a launch title for the Nintendo 64 to critical and commercial acclaim. Progress in this game requires the collection of "power stars" through visiting levels. Glitches, however, allow for the completion of the game with various star requirements, including no stars at all.

The current real-time world record for beating Super Mario 64 with no constraints (i.e., Any%) is 6:32. To accomplish this time, glitches are used to skip large portions of the game, and no stars are required. The 0-star record, as it is more commonly known, is currently held by Dowsky and was set on 19 September 2020. [104]

The world record for collecting all 120 stars in Super Mario 64 was lowered to 1:42:15 by speedrunner Nero during a race. [105] [106] The record was later improved again to 1:40:51 by Cheese05, [107] followed by Puncayshun, who lowered it down to 1:40:44. [108] The current world record is now 1:38:28 by simply. [109]

Besides the 0-Star (Any%) category and 120-Star (100%) category, three other major categories of Super Mario 64 speedrunning exist: 1-Star, 16-Star, and 70-Star. In those categories, the player must collect as many stars as the category specifies. The 70-Star record is treated as a "glitchless" Any%, as it is the minimum number of stars needed to complete the game as the game designers intended. 1-Star and 16-Star are legacy categories that still see plenty of competition due to their storied history and difference in required strategy and skill set.

The current world record for 1-Star completion was achieved by Dowsky, who completed the game in 7 minutes and 12 seconds. On 10 May 2020, akki set the 16-star record with a time of 14 minutes 59 seconds and 330 milliseconds. On 12 June 2020, German speedrunner Dwhatever achieved the world record for 70-Star, with a time of 46 minutes and 59 seconds. [110]

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is a 1986 side-scrolling platform game developed and published by Nintendo as the first sequel to their 1985 bestseller Super Mario Bros. The games are similar in style and gameplay, apart from a steep increase in difficulty. Like the original, Mario or Luigi venture to rescue the Princess from Bowser. Unlike the original, the game has no two-player option and Luigi is differentiated from his twin plumber brother with reduced ground friction and increased jump height. The Lost Levels also introduces setbacks such as poison mushroom power-ups, counterproductive level warps, and mid-air wind gusts. The game has 32 levels across eight worlds as well as 20 bonus levels.

Speedrun Play-through of a video game performed as quickly as possible

A speedrun is a play-through, or a recording thereof, of a whole video game or a selected part of it, performed with the intention of completing it as fast as possible. While all speedruns aim for quick completion, some speedruns are characterized by additional goals or limitations that players subject themselves to, such as collecting all key items, playing blindfolded, or attempting to achieve goals that are particularly not a desirable goal for a video game's community. Players speedrun mainly to challenge themselves, to entertain and to compete with themselves and others. Players performing speedruns, called speedrunners, often record their attempts. These recordings are used to entertain others, to verify the completion time, to certify that all rules were followed, and to spot ways to further improve the completion time.

A tool-assisted speedrun or tool-assisted superplay (TAS) is generally defined as speedrunning a game in an emulator with the goal of creating a theoretically perfect playthrough. As the name implies, a TAS is not performed by an actual human being, but rather by a program or a piece of software that delivers frame-perfect optimized controller input to complete the game in the fastest way possible. The script that delivers these inputs is provided by the TAS author, who would use their knowledge of the game's mechanics and various tools built into the emulator to optimize a speedrun until no more improvements can be identified. Tools used to this end include using savestates and branches, slow-down and going frame-by-frame, creating macros and scripts to perform automated actions, and so on. At the extreme end of this endeavor, means such as disassembly and brute-forcing can be used.
