List of Turkish Canadians

The following is a list of Turkish Canadians, including both original immigrants of full or partial Turkish descent who obtained Canadian citizenship and their Canadian descendants.

Most notable Turkish Canadians have come from, or originate from, Turkey but there are also notable Canadians of Turkish origin who have immigrated from, or descend from, the other former Ottoman territories, especially Turks from the Balkans (e.g. Mesut Mert has a Turkish-Bulgarian background), the island of Cyprus (e.g. Ozay Mehmet and Anna Silk have a Turkish Cypriot background), the Levant, and North Africa (e.g. Nihal Mazloum, has a Turkish-Egyptian).

Some notable Turkish Canadians have also come to Canada from areas where there is a modern Turkish diaspora; for example, Viola Yanik has a Turkish-German background.

Mehmet Fuat Köprülü, also known as Köprülüzade Mehmed Fuad, was a highly influential Turkish sociologist, turkologist, scholar, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Turkey. A descendant of the prominent Köprülü family, Fuat Köprülü was a key figure in the intersection of scholarship and politics in early 20th century Turkey.

Viola Yanik is a Canadian wrestler. She has wrestled since 1997 and is a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan. She won a bronze medal in the 63 kg freestyle event at the 2003 World Championships in New York City, New York and wrestled in the first ever Women's Wrestling at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, placing fifth. She retired from wrestling at the end of 2005 to pursue other endeavors.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Nihal Atsız</span> Turkish writer and nationalist (1905–1975)

Hüseyin Nihâl Atsız was a prominent Turkish ultranationalist writer, novelist, and poet. Atsız self-identified as a racist, Pan-Turkist and Turanist. He later became a critic of Islam, calling it "a religion created by Arabs, for Arabs". He was the author of over 30 books and numerous articles and was in strong opposition to the government of İsmet İnönü, which he criticized for co-operating with the communists. He was accused of being a sympathizer of the Nazi government and plotting to overthrow the Turkish government.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mercan Dede</span> Turkish musician (born 1966)

Mercan Dede, also known as DJ Arkin Allen, is a Turkish-Canadian composer, ney and bendir player, DJ, and producer. He is a world music artist, playing a fusion of traditional acoustic Turkish and other oriental styles with electronic sounds. Dede has worked in collaboration with Turkish and international musicians, such as Susheela Raman, Azam Ali, Dhafer Youssef, Sheema Mukherjee, and Hugh Marsh.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ennis Esmer</span> Turkish-Canadian actor and comedian

Ennis Esmer is a Turkish-Canadian actor, comedian, voice actor, writer, producer and presenter. He is best known for his roles as Osman 'Oz' Bey in The Listener, Kurtis 'Maz' Mazhari in Private Eyes, Nash in Red Oaks, and as Rich Dotcom in Blindspot – a role that was specifically written for him.

The British Cypriot community in the United Kingdom consists of British people born on, or with ancestors from, the Eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus. British Cypriot people may be of Greek, Turkish, Maronite, or Armenian descent.

Aynur Doğan is a contemporary Kurdish singer and musician from Turkey.

Ozay Mehmet was a Cypriot-Canadian professor emeritus of international affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario.

Jasser Auda is a scholar and distinguished professor of Islamic law, in particular, the study of the higher purposes or maqasid of the Sharia. He is the President of Maqasid Institute Global, which is a think tank registered in the United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia and Indonesia, and has educational and research programs in a number of countries.

Nihal Mazloum is a Paris-born Egyptian-Canadian artist.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Atatürk Teacher Training Academy</span>

Atatürk Teacher Training Academy is a higher education institution in Nicosia, North Cyprus. The academy was founded in 1937 by the ruling British government in Cyprus as the Morphou Teacher Training College. It is accredited as a university by YÖK, the Council of Higher Education of Turkey, and YÖDAK, The Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Council of Northern Cyprus. Atatürk Teacher Training Academy is the oldest active higher education institution in Cyprus.

Ilkay Silk is a Cypriot-born British and Canadian award-winning actress, playwright, producer, administrator, and educator. Between 1978 and 2014 she was the Director of Drama for St. Thomas University (STU), producing more than sixty plays. The Canadian Theatre Encyclopedia has compared Silk's contributions to theatre practise and education in New Brunswick to be a career which "parallels that of Toronto's Dora Mavor Moore and Calgary's Betty Mitchell".
