The following is a list of British Turks , including people of full or partial ethnic Turkish origin with British citizenship.

Contents

The majority of notable British Turks come from the large Turkish Cypriot community, followed by ethnic Turks who originate from Turkey. In addition, there are notable British Turks who descend from other post-Ottoman modern nation-states which still have significant ethnic Turkish minorities. For example, from the Balkans, Silvena Rowe has a paternal Turkish Bulgarian background [1] Moustafa Palazli has a Turkish Western Thracian background from Greece. [2] From North Africa, Kasim Kutay has a paternal Turkish Egyptian background. [3] Meanwhile, Egyptian-born Dodi Fayed was maternally of Turkish Saudi origin. [4] From the Levant, Farah Zeynep Abdullah, Nemir Kirdar [5] and Rena Kirdar [5] have a Turkish Iraqi background; Rana Kabbani has a Turkish Syrian background; [6] and Skandar Keynes and Soumaya Keynes have a maternal Turkish Lebanese background. [7]

In addition, there are notable naturalised British citizens of Turkish origin who descend from the modern Turkish diaspora (i.e. from countries which were never part of the former Ottoman Empire). The majority are "Euro-Turks" who descend from Western Europe (e.g. Erol Gelenbe [8] and Elif Shafak [9] have a Turkish French background; Atif Bashir [10] and Semra Eren-Nijhar [11] have a Turkish German background). Some British Turks have also come from the diaspora in North America (e.g. Erdem Moralioğlu has a Turkish Canadian background [12] ).

Many notable British Turks have dual nationality, including British nationality and the country which they descend from (e.g. Cypriot, TRNC, Turkish, Bulgarian, Iraqi, etc.). Some British Turks have also moved to other parts of the modern Turkish diaspora where they have acquired another citizenship. This is most notable among the British-Turkish Cypriot diaspora; for example, in addition to their British citizenship, Hal Ozsan also has American citizenship; Mutlu Çerkez also has Australian citizenship; and Alkan Chaglar and Erol Kahraman both also have Canadian citizenship, etc.

Turkish Cypriots or Cypriot Turks are ethnic Turks originating from Cyprus. Turkish Cypriots are mainly Sunni Muslims. Following the Ottoman conquest of the island in 1571, about 30,000 Turkish settlers were given land once they arrived in Cyprus. Additionally, many of the island's local Christians converted to Islam during the early years of Ottoman rule. Nonetheless, the influx of mainly Muslim settlers to Cyprus continued intermittently until the end of the Ottoman period. Today, while Northern Cyprus is home to a significant part of the Turkish Cypriot population, the majority of Turkish Cypriots live abroad, forming the Turkish Cypriot diaspora. This diaspora came into existence after the Ottoman Empire transferred the control of the island to the British Empire, as many Turkish Cypriots emigrated primarily to Turkey and the United Kingdom for political and economic reasons.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">British Turks</span> Ethnic group in the United Kingdom

British Turks or Turks in the United Kingdom are Turkish people who have immigrated to the United Kingdom. However, the term may also refer to British-born persons who have Turkish parents or who have a Turkish ancestral background.

The British Cypriot community in the United Kingdom consists of British people born on, or with ancestors from, the Eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus. British Cypriot people may be of Greek, Turkish, Maronite, Lebanese or Armenian descent.

Turks in Denmark, also referred to as Turkish Danes or Danish Turks refers to ethnic Turkish people living in Denmark. They currently form the largest ethnic minority group in the country; thus, the Turks are the second-largest ethnic group in Denmark, after the ethnic Danish people. The majority of Danish Turks descend from the Republic of Turkey; however, there has also been significant Turkish migration from other post-Ottoman countries including ethnic Turkish communities which have come to Denmark from the Balkans, the island of Cyprus, and more recently Iraq and Syria.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Turks in Ireland</span> Ethnic group in Ireland

Turks in Ireland are Turkish people who live in Ireland having been born elsewhere or are Irish-born but have Turkish roots. By Turkish roots, this could mean roots linking back to Turkey, the island of Cyprus, or the communities of the Turkish diaspora.

Mustafa Çağatay (1937–1989) was a Turkish Cypriot politician who served as the first Prime Minister of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus from 15 November 1983 to 13 December 1983. He was previously prime minister of the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus from 1978 to 1983.

Turks in Sweden or Swedish Turks are people of ethnic Turkish origin living in Sweden. The majority of Swedish Turks descend from the Republic of Turkey; however there has also been significant Turkish migration waves from other post-Ottoman countries including ethnic Turkish communities which have come to Sweden from the Balkans, the island of Cyprus, and more recently Iraq and Syria.

Turks in London or London Turks refers to Turkish people who live in London, the capital city of the United Kingdom. The Turkish community in the United Kingdom is not evenly distributed across the country. As a result, the concentration of the Turks is almost all in Greater London. The Turks have created Turkish neighbourhoods mostly in North and North-East London however there are also Turkish communities in South London and the City of Westminster.

Kamil Ahmet Çörekçi is a Turkish footballer who plays as a right back for Süper Lig club Hatayspor.

Semra Eren-Nijhar is a Turkish writer, sociologist, documentary filmmaker and a social commentator.

Raif Denktaş was a Turkish Cypriot composer, politician, academic, journalist and writer. He died after a controversial car accident where his car collided with a military vehicle.

Sıla Usar İncirli is a Turkish Cypriot neurologist, politician, researcher and trade unionist. She was elected as a member of the Assembly of the Republic of Northern Cyprus in 2018.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Atatürk Teacher Training Academy</span>

Atatürk Teacher Training Academy is a higher education institution in Nicosia, North Cyprus. The academy was founded in 1937 by the ruling British government in Cyprus as the Morphou Teacher Training College. It is accredited as a university by YÖK, the Council of Higher Education of Turkey, and YÖDAK, The Higher Education Planning, Evaluation, Accreditation and Coordination Council of Northern Cyprus. Atatürk Teacher Training Academy is the oldest active higher education institution in Cyprus.
