Tomboy is a term used for girls or young women with masculine traits. It can include wearing androgynous or unfeminine clothing and engaging in physical sports or other activities and behaviors usually associated with boys or men.
Placebo are a British alternative rock band, formed in London in 1994 by vocalist–guitarist Brian Molko and bassist–guitarist Stefan Olsdal. Drummer Robert Schultzberg joined in late 1994, but left in 1996 shortly after the release of the band's eponymous debut album due to conflicts with Molko, and was replaced the same year by Steve Hewitt. Molko was born in Belgium and Olsdal and Schultzberg in Sweden; remaining members Molko and Olsdal both grew up in Luxembourg before separately relocating to London and are both British citizens.

The Bem Sex-Role Inventory (BSRI) is a measure of masculinity and femininity, and is used to research gender roles. It assesses how people identify themselves psychologically. Sandra Bem's goal of the BSRI was to examine psychological androgyny and provide empirical evidence to show the advantage of a shared masculine and feminine personality versus a sex-typed categorization. The test is formatted with 60 different personality traits which participants rate themselves based on a 7-point Likert scale. Traits are evenly dispersed, 20 masculine, 20 feminine, and 20 filler traits thought to be gender neutral. All traits in the BSRI are positively valued personality aspects. Numerous past studies have found that gender categorizations are correlated with many stereotypical gendered behaviors.

In the early 70s, it was the boys (Bowie, Bolan, Iggy) who glamorised androgyny. But by the late 70s Jones was outdoing them. She exuded both grace and menace, femininity and masculinity, and of course sexuality.
As Goude told People about Jones, "Men think she's sexy. Women think she's a little masculine," and "gays think she's a drag queen." Androgyny was always her thing, as was a sexuality that could swing from remote and alien to animalistic and overpowering. Among the most famous Goude images is the cover of Jones's 1981 album, Nightclubbing, in which she appears sporting her trademark flattop, a cigarette dangling from her lips, and wearing a power suit with lapels so wide and shoulder pads so square, they echo the harsh geometry of her haircut. She's an impossibly idealized caricature of masculinity.
Q: Are you feminine? Do you like being masculine? GJ: I like being both, actually. I mean, I'm a lot... It's not about being masculine, it's an attitude, really. Being masculine, what is that? Can you tell me what is "being masculine"? I just act the way I feel, and I've always felt a lot of the male... of my family influence in me, I've lived with males all my life, whether it was my father, or my grandfather, or brothers... and we all rub off on each other.

Manson wore different colored contacts to make his eyes look like Bowie's and was depicted on the album cover with fiery red hair and prosthetic breasts, embracing the type of otherworldly androgyny Bowie exhibited in his Ziggy Stardust era.

In the late '90s, after moving from England to New York and marrying the dominatrix Jacqueline Breyer, P-Orridge and their wife began what they called the Pandrogeny Project — a lifelong journey toward becoming one being. Both P-Orridge and Breyer pursued cosmetic surgery to resemble each other. For P-Orridge, the project constituted a de facto gender transition in accordance with the androgyny they'd long felt.
