This list of electoral wards in Cardiff includes electoral wards in the city and county of Cardiff, Wales. It also includes Community Council wards. There were further ward changes effective from the May 2022 Cardiff Council election, as a result of a 2020 boundary review.
The unitary authority area is divided into 28 electoral wards. Many of these wards are coterminous with communities of the same name. [1] The following table lists council wards, communities and associated geographical areas. Communities with a community council are indicated with an asterisk.
In October 2021 Cardiff Council accepted a large number ward change proposals of the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales, with only slight modification. These were to take effect from the 2022 council election. [2]
Twenty-one wards were to remain unchanged: Adamsdown, Caerau, Canton, Cathays, Cyncoed, Ely, Fairwater, Gabalfa, Heath, Llandaff, Llandaff North, Llanrumney, Penylan, Plasnewydd, Pontprennau/Old St Mellons (but renamed "Pontprennau and Old St Mellons"), Rhiwbina, Riverside, Rumney, Splott, Trowbridge, Whitchurch and Tongwynlais. The post-1996 unitary authority of the City and County of Cardiff has since 1999 been divided into 29 electoral wards returning 75 councillors to Cardiff Council. Many of these wards are coterminous with communities (civil parishes) of the same name. Prior to the 1999 election, Lisvane and (Old) St Mellons were combined in a "Lisvane and St Mellons" ward, returning 1 councillor. Radyr was combined with St Fagans in a "Radyr and St Fagans" ward, returning 1 councillor. Creigiau returned its own councillor.
The communities of Lisvane, Pentyrch and Creigiau, Radyr and St Fagans elect their own community councils.
Following the creation of Cardiff County Borough Council in 1889, in 1890 the number of electoral wards was increased from 5 to 10. Each ward was represented by 3 councillors. [10]
Lisvane is a community in the north of Cardiff, the capital of Wales, located 5 miles (8 km) north of the city centre. Lisvane is generally considered to be one of the wealthiest residential areas of Wales, with many properties worth in excess of £1 million. Lisvane had 3,319 residents in 2001 and comprises approximately 1,700 dwellings, a local village shop, primary school, community cabin library, park, nursery, parish church, public house, war memorial, Scout hall and community or village hall.
Adamsdown is an inner city area and community in the south of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Adamsdown is generally located between Newport Road, to the north and the mainline railway to the south. The area includes Cardiff Prison, Cardiff Magistrates' Court, Cardiff Royal Infirmary, a University of South Wales campus, and many streets of residential housing. There are two primary schools in the area Adamsdown Primary School and Tredegarville Primary School.
Cardiff West is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2001 by Kevin Brennan of the Labour Party.
Pentyrch is a village and community located on the western outskirts of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. The village gives its name to a Cardiff local authority electoral ward, Pentyrch, which covers the village and immediate surrounding area. The Pentyrch community includes the neighbouring village of Creigiau and Gwaelod y Garth. People living in Pentyrch are commonly known as "Penterchyians".
Radyr and Morganstown is a community of Cardiff which covers the areas of Radyr and Morganstown in the northwest of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. The community elects a Radyr and Morganstown community council.
Pontprennau and Old St Mellons is an electoral ward in Cardiff, Wales. Covering the communities of Old St Mellons and Pontprennau, it is represented by two councillors on Cardiff Council.
Creigiau & St. Fagans was a rural electoral ward on the western edge of Cardiff, Wales.
Creigiau is a dormitory settlement in the north-west of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. The village currently has about 1,500 houses and a population of approximately 5,000 people. Prior to 2022 The Cardiff electoral ward covering the village was Creigiau & St Fagans. Following the recommendations of the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales the ward was merged with Pentyrch to form the new ward of "Pentyrch and St Fagans" effective from the 2022 Cardiff Council election. The village has a strong Welsh-speaking community, and along with Pentyrch has one of the largest clusters of Welsh-speakers in Cardiff. 23.4% of the village speaks Welsh.

Radyr is the name of an electoral ward in the northwest of the city of Cardiff, Wales. It is coterminous with the community of Radyr and Morganstown which as the name suggests includes the villages of Radyr and Morganstown.
Cardiff Rural District was a second tier local government district of Glamorgan, Wales, until 1974. It covered the more rural areas to the west and north of the city of Cardiff.
The 1983 Cardiff City Council election was held on Thursday 5 May 1983 to the district council known as Cardiff City Council, in Cardiff, South Glamorgan, Wales. It took place on the same day as other district council elections in Wales and England. The Conservative Party regained control of the council from the Labour Party.

The 2022 Cardiff Council election took place on 5 May 2022 to elect 79 members to Cardiff Council. On the same day, elections were held to the other 21 local authorities and to community councils in Wales as part of the 2022 Welsh local elections.
