List of international trips made by Jack McConnell

Jack McConnell, who served as the third first minister of Scotland between 27 November 2001 until 16 May 2007 attended visits internationally to promote Scotland and its economy, encourage inward investment in the country and to attend meetings with other heads of government. During his tenure as first minister, McConnell conducted a total of twenty-eight international visits.

Additionally, McConnell opened a new art exhibition in Scotland House and met with senior European Union figures. During his visit, McConnell called on European Union leaders to establish a new body to "oversee [[Scottish devolution|devolution" in order to "recognise the role of devolved administrations". [3]

Additionally, McConnell met with the Minister-President of Flanders, Secretary General of NATO, George Robertson and engaged in discussions with the permanent representative of the United Kingdom to the European Union, Nigel Sheinwald. 19 October 2003–22 OctoberDuring a joint overseas visits to both Belgium and Italy, McConnell attended the Informal Council meeting on Regional Policy held in Rome (Italy) and then travelled to Belgium where he engaged in a series of meetings in Brussels. [6]

During his visit to France, McConnell engaged in Scottish Development International (SDI) related meetings. [8]

9 March 2006 – 27 MarchMcConnell attended the Commonwealth Games held in the Australian city of Melbourne as part of the Scottish delegation in an opportunity to support the Scottish Team. Whilst in Australia, McConnell undertook a series of events to advocate for and support Glasgow's bid for the 2014 edition of the games. Additionally, McConnell engaged in meetings with a range of political leaders. Following his Australian visit, McConnel travelled to Beijing in China where he undertook a series of meetings, events and visits.

McConnell also used the visit to highlight Scotland's experience in regards to public consultations, and promised a "new era" of Scotland and European Union relations. [12]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">First McConnell government</span> Scottish Government from 2001 to 2003

The first McConnell government was formed by Jack McConnell on 27 November 2001 during the 1st Scottish Parliament, following Henry McLeish's resignation as First Minister of Scotland as a consequence of the Officegate scandal. The first McConnell government was a continuation of the Labour–Liberal Democrat coalition that had existed under the previous McLeish and Dewar governments. It ended on 20 May 2003 following the 2003 election to the 2nd Scottish parliament, which saw McConnell returning to office as first minister to form a second government.

The British–Irish Intergovernmental Conference (BIIGC) is an intergovernmental organisation established by the Governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom under the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. It first met in London in 1999, and the latest meeting took place at 100 Parliament Street in London on 29 April 2024.

The Organisation of Scottish Labour is a body established under the national rules of the UK Labour Party.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Premiership of Jack McConnell</span> Period of Scottish governance from 2001 to 2007

Jack McConnell's term as First Minister of Scotland began on 22 November 2001 when he was formally sworn into office at the Court of Session. It followed the resignation of Henry McLeish over the Officegate scandal. His term ended on 16 May 2007, following the defeat of the Scottish Labour Party in the 2007 Scottish Parliament election, where the Scottish National Party formed a minority government.
