The Cagay-anon people (or Kagay-anons) are the multiethnic permanent residents of Cagayan de Oro, a highly urbanized city located in the of the Northern Mindanao in the Philippines regardless of ethnicity or religion. Locals are themselves often referred to as a "tripeople", composed of indigenous peoples (mainly Higaonons), Moros and descendants of twentieth-century settlers from the Visayas (mostly from Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor and Negros Oriental) and Luzon.

Cebuano is the lingua franca of Cagayan de Oro, used by its inhabitants of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds to communicate with each other. Other languages spoken varyingly in the city are Higaonon, Binukid, Subanen, Maranao, Iranun, Maguindanaon, Tausug, Bicolano, Hiligaynon, Ilocano, Kapampangan and Pangasinan. English and Tagalog/Filipino are also widely used.

Aquilino Quilinging Pimentel Jr., commonly known as Nene Pimentel, was a Filipino politician and human rights lawyer who was one of the leading political opposition leaders during the regime of Ferdinand Marcos from the declaration of martial law in 1972 until the People Power Revolution in 1986, which removed Marcos from power. He co-founded the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan (PDP–Laban) and served as the President of the Senate of the Philippines from 2000 to 2001. He is the father of incumbent senator and former Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III. In 2018, Pimentel was identified by the Human Rights Victims' Claims Board as a Motu Proprio human rights violations victim of the Martial Law Era.

Aquilino Martin "Koko" de la Llana Pimentel III, is a Filipino politician and lawyer serving as the Senate Minority Leader since 2022. Sunday Salvacion is a Filipino former professional basketball player. He played the small forward and shooting guard positions. Salvacion played college basketball for the De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) Blazers before spending twelve years in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Salvacion also played in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) and the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL).

The 2006 Hope-PBA All-Star Weekend was the annual all-star weekend of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA)'s 2005–06 PBA season. This was the second all-star weekend held in the season, due to the league adjusting its season calendar.

The 1990 Mindanao revolt was an uprising that occurred in parts of the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. It began when Alexander Noble, a dissident Philippine Army colonel linked to the 1989 Philippine coup attempt against President Corazon Aquino, and his supporters, which included Mindanaoan separatists, seized two military garrisons in Cagayan de Oro and Butuan without firing a shot and unilaterally proclaimed the independence of the Federal Republic of Mindanao on October 4, 1990, to be led by a civilian-military junta and with an ultimate goal of removing Aquino from office. However, Noble failed to gain support, and surrendered two days later following attacks by government forces. The revolt was the last overt attempt to overthrow Aquino's government until the end of her term in 1992.
