Puntland, officially the Puntland State of Somalia, is an autonomous territory formed in 1998 that became a Federal Member State. It is the second largest airport in the country after the Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.

But in July 2022, the Emirates-based Dubai Ports World, a global operator of ports and logistics, returned to Bosaso.
