Omdurman is a major city in Sudan. It is the second most populous city in the country, located in the State of Khartoum. Omdurman lies on the west bank of the River Nile, opposite and northwest of the capital city of Khartoum. It is on the Nile river and acts as an important road hub, with the Nile boosting transportation even further.
The University of Khartoum is a public university located in Khartoum, Sudan. It is the largest and oldest university in Sudan. UofK was founded as Gordon Memorial College in 1902 and established in 1956 when Sudan gained independence. Since that date, the University of Khartoum has been recognized as a top university and a high-ranked academic institution in Sudan and Africa.
Sudan University of Science and Technology is one of the largest public universities in Sudan, with ten campuses in Khartoum state. The main campus is located in the so-called Al Mugran area of Khartoum, the confluence of the White Nile and the Blue Nile.
The University of Medical Sciences and Technology (UMST) is a co-educational mainly medical oriented college in Khartoum, Sudan. The mission of UMST is to serve the educational needs of Sudanese, African and Arab students. It is located in the Riyad district of Khartoum. It first opened its doors in 1995 with a student body of only forty students and two faculties. In 2017 it had become home to 5,000-6,000 students and costs US$15,000 for the school of medicine in 2018. The university has 14 faculties. In 2014 the University stated that 60% of its students were foreign.
Ahfad University for Women is a private women's university in Omdurman, Sudan that was founded in 1966, by Yusuf Badri, son of the Mahdist soldier Babiker Badri. The university began with only 23 students and 3 teachers. It was the first Sudanese women's college. The current president is Prof. Gasim Badri, Yusuf Badri's son.
Alexandria University is a public university in Alexandria, Egypt. It was established in 1938 as a satellite of Fouad University, becoming an independent entity in 1942. It was known as Farouk University until after the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, when its name was changed to the University of Alexandria. Taha Hussein was the founding rector of Alexandria University. It is now the second largest university in Egypt and has many affiliations to various universities for ongoing research.
The University of Juba is an English-language public university located in Juba, South Sudan. It was founded in 1975 under by the former Vice president of and President of Southern Sudan, Abel Alier Kwai. The university was temporarily relocated to Khartoum as a result of the Second Sudanese Civil War, and moved back to Juba in July 2011, after South Sudan obtained independence. It is the best ranked university in South Sudan.
Omdurman Islamic University is a university built on an area of size about 800 feddans in Omdurman, Sudan. While the school is primarily oriented toward Islamic studies, it serves other fields of studies as well, such as engineering, agriculture and medicine. Omdurman Islamic University is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World.
The University of Kordofan is one of the largest universities in Sudan located in El-Obeid 560 km to the southwest of Khartoum. It was founded in 1990 and is recognized as one of the top universities in Sudan. It features several institutes, academic units and research centres, including the Institute of Gum Arabic Research and Desertification Studies, the Centre for Intermediate Technology in Agriculture and a Deanship for Scientific Research and Postgraduate Studies. It is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World.
Red Sea University is located in the city of Port Sudan, in the state of The Red Sea in eastern Sudan. It was established in 1994. It is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World.
Sudanese Universities Information Network (SUIN) is the national research and education network in Sudan. In 2004, SUIN was first founded and developed under the umbrella of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. Since the beginning of October 2009, SUIN has been operational under the umbrella of the Association of Sudanese Universities, which is a non-governmental organization (NGO) body for all tertiary education and research institutions in Sudan. An MoU was signed between thirty universities, with a main objective to support the establishment of SUIN as a legal independent body.
Future University (FU), formerly known as Computer Man College or (CMC), is an Information and communications technology university in Sudan. It was established in 1991 as the first college to introduce an Information Technology program in the country. It was also one of the first to introduce Computer Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering and Architecture & Design programs. It was upgraded to a university in August 2010 by the Sudanese Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The university adopts the credit hours system in its education process. Currently, the university contains seven faculties, each offering several programs.

The university has faculties of Education and Humanities, Shariah and Islamic Studies, of Pure and Applied Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
The University of Zalingei is a public university located in Central Darfur, Sudan. Its headquarters is based in the town of Zalingei, its namesake. It was established in March 1994.
University of El Imam El Mahdi is a public Sudanese university based in the town of Kosti, Sudan. The university was founded in 1994 as a public university funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. It is named in honor of Muhammad Ahmad al-Mahdi, the leader of the Mahdist revolution which overthrew the Ottoman-Egyptian administration and established their own "Islamic and national" government in Sudan (1885–1898).
The Karary University is a university based in the city of Omdurman in the state of Khartoum, Sudan. The university was established in 1996 as a public university funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The Karary Academy of Technology was conceived as tertiary educational institution that would prepare engineering and technological students to meet the needs of the armed forces and military industries, and to guide the relevant scientific research. In 2011, according to Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales, Madrid, the university ranked 10,494 in the world, fourth in Sudan. In Sudan, it ranked behind the University of Khartoum, Sudan University of Science and Technology, National Ribat University and ahead of the International University of Africa.

The Bayan University is an educational institution based in the city of Khartoum, Sudan. It was established in 1997 as the "Bayan College of Science and Technology", and admitted the first students in 1998. The university offers diplomas in Construction Engineering and Construction, Information Technology and Engineering of medical equipment. It offers bachelor's degrees in Computer Science, Information Systems and Electronic Engineering. The university is a member of the Sudanese University Libraries Consortium.
