The primary regulator of communications in the United States is the Federal Communications Commission. It closely regulates all of the industries mentioned below with the exception of newspapers and the Internet service provider industry.
A television network or broadcaster is a telecommunications network for distribution of television program content, whereby a central operation provides programming to many television stations or pay television providers. Until the mid-1980s, television programming in most countries of the world was dominated by a small number of terrestrial networks. Many early television networks evolved from earlier radio networks.
WRGT-TV, virtual channel 45, is a dual Fox/MyNetworkTV-affiliated television station licensed to Dayton, Ohio, United States. The station is owned by Cunningham Broadcasting; the Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns ABC affiliate WKEF, operates WRGT-TV under a local marketing agreement (LMA). However, Sinclair effectively owns WRGT-TV as the majority of Cunningham's stock is owned by the family of deceased group founder Julian Smith. The two stations share studios on Corporate Place in Miamisburg; WRGT-TV's transmitter is located off South Gettysburg Avenue near Guthrie Road in southwest Dayton, between the city's Highview Hills neighborhood and Jefferson Township's New Chicago section. On cable, the station is available on Charter Spectrum channel 8.
Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation is one of the leading South Korean television and radio network companies. Munhwa is the Sino-Korean word for "culture". Its flagship terrestrial television station MBC TV is Channel 11 (LCN) for Digital.
High-definition television (HDTV) in the United States was introduced in 1998 and has since become increasingly popular and dominant in the television market. Hundreds of HD channels are available in millions of homes and businesses both terrestrially and via subscription services such as satellite, cable and IPTV. HDTV has quickly become the standard, with about 85% of all TVs used being HD as of 2018. In the US, the 720p and 1080i formats are used for linear channels, while 1080p is available on a limited basis, mainly for pay-per-view and video on demand content.
KVII-TV, virtual and VHF digital channel 7, is a dual ABC/CW+-affiliated television station licensed to Amarillo, Texas, United States. The station is owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group. KVII's studios are located at One Broadcast Center between South Pierce and South Buchanan streets in downtown Amarillo, and its transmitter is located west of US 87/287, in unincorporated Potter County. On cable, the station is available on Suddenlink Communications channel 8 in standard definition and digital channel 708 in high definition in Amarillo, and on channel 7 on other providers in outlying areas of the market.
Montana PBS is the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) member public television state network for Montana. It is a joint venture between Montana State University (MSU) and the University of Montana (UM). The network is headquartered in the Visual Communications Building on the MSU campus in Bozeman, with a separate studio on the UM campus in Missoula.
WWRD-LP is a low-power commercial television station in Centerville, Montgomery County, Ohio, broadcasting locally on channel 32 and found on some local cable systems. Founded December 8, 1989, the station is owned by Life Broadcasting Network. It is currently an affiliate of The Country Network; in addition, the station broadcasts some local high school sporting events and a few other local programs.
Currently, there are two primary satellite television providers of subscription based service available to United States consumers: DirecTV and Dish Network, which have 21 and 10 million subscribers respectively.
WRGX-LD, virtual and UHF digital channel 23, is a low-powered, dual NBC/CW+-affiliated television station licensed to Dothan, Alabama, United States and serving the Wiregrass Region of southeastern Alabama. Owned by Gray Television, it is a sister station to dual CBS/MyNetworkTV affiliate WTVY. The two stations share studios on North Foster Street in Downtown Dothan; WRGX-LD's transmitter is located in Bethlehem, Florida.
A sign-on is the beginning of operations for a radio or television station, generally at the start of each day. It is the opposite of a sign-off, which is the sequence of operations involved when a radio or television station shuts down its transmitters and goes off the air for a predetermined period; generally, this occurs during the overnight hours although a broadcaster's digital specialty or sub-channels may start up and closedown at significantly different times as its main channels.
