Liua is a genus of salamanders (common name: Sichuan salamanders) in the family Hynobiidae, endemic to China. [1] [2]
The genus contains only two species: [1] [2] [3]
The Cryptobranchidae are a family of fully aquatic salamanders commonly known as the giant salamanders. A single species, the hellbender, inhabits the eastern United States, with species also inhabiting China and Japan. They are the largest living amphibians known today. The Japanese giant salamander reaches up to 1.44 m (4.7 ft) in length, feeds at night on fish and crustaceans, and has been known to live for more than 50 years in captivity. The South China giant salamander can reach a length of 1.8 m (5.9 ft).
Salamandridae is a family of salamanders consisting of true salamanders and newts. Salamandrids are distinguished from other salamanders by the lack of rib or costal grooves along the sides of their bodies and by their rough skin. Their skin is very granular because of the number of poison glands. They also lack nasolabial grooves. Most species of Salamandridae have moveable eyelids but lack lacrimal glands.
The Asiatic salamanders are primitive salamanders found all over Asia, and in European Russia. They are closely related to the giant salamanders, with which they form the suborder Cryptobranchoidea. About half of hynobiids currently described are unique to Japan.
Karin Hills frog (Brachytarsophrys) is a genus of the family Megophryidae in the order Anura, and are found in southern China, Myanmar, northern Thailand and northern Vietnam.
Nanorana is a genus of dicroglossid frogs. They are found in Asia, from the Himalayan region of northern Pakistan and northern India, Nepal, and western China east to montane southern China and southeast to Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and northern Vietnam. Common names of these frogs reflect the complex taxonomic history of the genus and include Yunnan slow frogs and High Himalaya frogs.
Dianchungosaurus is an extinct genus of mesoeucrocodylian crocodylomorph from the Early Jurassic of China. It was previously considered a dinosaur, but it was recently reclassified as a mesoeucrocodylian by Paul Barrett and Xing Xu (2005). It is probably the same animal as the informally named "Tianchungosaurus". The type species is D. lufengensis and it was described in 1982. A second species, D. elegans, was named in 1986, but it has since become a synonym of the type species.
Paramesotriton, also known as warty newts or Asian warty newts, is a genus of salamanders in the family Salamandridae. The genus is found in southwestern and southern China and in northern Vietnam. Most of the species are endemic to China, and the majority of them have been described recently, since 2008. The genus includes both pond and stream dwellers.
Batrachuperus is a genus of salamander in the family Hynobiidae found in western China and adjacent Myanmar. Their common name is stream salamanders or mountain salamanders. Species now in Paradactylodon were formerly part of the then paraphyletic Batrachuperus.
The Chiala mountain salamander is a species of salamander in the family Hynobiidae endemic to China and known from northwestern Sichuan, northeastern Tibet, and southeastern Gansu. Its validity as a species distinct from Batrachuperus tibetanus has been controversial. It is named after Karl Patterson Schmidt, American herpetologist.
The alpine stream salamander is a species of salamander in the family Hynobiidae endemic to central China. Its natural habitats are rivers and freshwater springs. It is threatened by habitat loss.
Pachyhynobius shangchengensis, the Shangcheng stout salamander, is a species of salamander in the family Hynobiidae. It is monotypic within the genus Pachyhynobius. It is named after its type locality, Shangcheng. It is endemic to the Dabie Mountains in central China. Its natural habitats are subtropical moist lowland forests, montane forests, and rivers. It is threatened by habitat loss.
The yellow-spotted salamander is a species of salamander in the family Hynobiidae, endemic to China, where it is known from Nanchuan in Chongqing, Suiyang in Guizhou, Lichuan in Hubei, and Sangzhi in Hunan Province. However, genetic methods have revealed cryptic species within the Liua–Pseudohynobius complex, and the actual distribution of the yellow-spotted salamander is turning out to be different. Only animals from Lichuan in Hubei and Sangzhi have been positively identified as being yellow-spotted salamanders, whereas animals collected from Nanchuan were described as a new species, P. jinfo, by Wei et al. in 2009.
Ranodon is a monotypic genus of salamanders in the family Hynobiidae. It currently contains only one species, the Central Asian salamander.
Liua shihi, the Wushan salamander, is a species of salamander in the family Hynobiidae, and is endemic to China. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, subtropical or tropical moist montane forests, rivers, and freshwater marshes. It is threatened by habitat loss.
Liua tsinpaensis, the Tsinpa salamander, is a species of salamander in the family Hynobiidae. It is synonymous with Ranodon tsinpaensis and is endemic to China. It occurs in southern Shaanxi and in Wanyuan, northeastern Sichuan. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist montane forests and rivers. It is threatened by habitat loss.
Oreolalax is a genus of amphibian in the family Megophryidae. They are mostly endemic to southwestern China, with one species in northern Vietnam, and possibly extending into adjacent Laos. There is also a population in Arunachal Pradesh that has not yet been assigned to a species, although it might rather be a Scutiger.
Paradactylodon is a genus of salamanders, known as the mountain salamanders or Middle Eastern stream salamanders, in the family Hynobiidae, endemic to Iran and Afghanistan.
Pseudohynobius is a genus of salamanders in the family Hynobiidae and is endemic to China. It contains these species:
The Guizhou salamander is a species of salamander in the family Hynobiidae. This recently described species is so far known only from its type locality, Yanxia Village in Guiding County in Guizhou; it is endemic to China. Adult salamanders measure 157–203 mm (6.2–8.0 in) in total length.
Zhao Ermi was a Chinese herpetologist, born in Chengdu. His ancestors were Manchu Bannerman of Irgen Gioro clan who were stationed in Chengdu during Qing Dynasty. He was elected a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2001. He died at West China Medical Center of Sichuan University on 24 December 2016.
