Biography
Westphal was born in Milan, Italy, in 1993, but grew up in Limoges, France. She has dual French and Italian citizenships.
Westphal competed for Boston College from 2011 to 2016, where she was a two-time NCAA Division I cross country All-American honoree by the USTFCCCA (2013 and 2014) and one time NCAA Division I outdoor track and field All-American honoree for the 5,000m (2015).
She was named ACC Cross-country performer of the year in 2014. [1]
She was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame on October 7, 2022. [2]
In the meantime, Westphal is a two-time French Junior champion in the 3000 m. She finished twelfth in the junior race at the 2012 European Cross-country Championships, in Budapest, Hungary, and eleventh in the 3000 m at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
She finished 6th in the Under-23 race at the 2013 European Cross-Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, and 5th in the 5000 m at the 2013 European Athletics Under-23 Championships in Tampere, Finland. In March 2017, Westphal's 5th place was upgraded to a bronze medal due to the disqualifications of Gamze Bulut and Tsehainesh Tsale.
On December 6, 2014, in Boston, she broke the French record for the 5000 m indoor in a time of 15 min 31 s 62. In February 2015, she ran 9 min 08 s 99 for 3000 m indoor and broke the Under-23 French record. Three months later, at the ACC Championship in Tallahassee, Florida, she ran 33 min 42 s 03 in the first 10,000 meters of her career and broke her third Under-23 French record of the 2015 season.
On July 12, 2015, she won the 5000 meters at the European Under-23 Championship in Tallinn, Estonia, and broke the Under-23 French record in 15 min 30 s 61. Two weeks later, she took part in the 5000m at the Salinsbury Games in London, Great Britain, and lowered, for the third time, the Under-23 French record to 15 min 28 s 61.
On October 12, 2015, she took part in her first 10k road race at the Tufts Health Plan 10k for Women and broke the Under-23 French 10k road race record in the time of 33 min 26 s.
On December 13, 2015, aged 21, she competed in the senior race at the European Cross Country Championship in Hyères, France. She finished 20th, while the French senior women team won the silver medal.
On October 23, 2016, she won the Mayor's Cup Cross Country meet in 16 min 53 s ahead of Amy Van Alstine and Mary Cain in historic Franklin Park, hosted by B.A.A. and USATF New England. [3]
On December 11, 2016, she competed in the senior race at the European Cross Country Championship in Chia, Italy, and finished 9th.
In 2019, she competed in the senior women's race at the 2019 IAAF World Cross Country Championships held in Aarhus, Denmark. [4] She finished in 22nd place. [4]
On December 5, 2019, she competed in the senior race at the European Cross Country Championship in Lisbon, Portugal, and finished 5th. [5]
On December 29, 2019, she broke the French record of the 10 km with a time of 31 min 15 s during the Corrida de Houilles. [6]
On February 15, 2020, she broke the 5 km French record with a time of 15 min 31 s at the Monaco Run in Monaco. [7]
Sentayehu Ejigu Tamerat is an Ethiopian long-distance runner, who specializes in the 3000 and 5000 metres. She represented Ethiopia at the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Koren Jelela, also known as Koren Jelila Yal, is an Ethiopian long-distance runner.
Jéssica de Barros Augusto, ComM is a Portuguese runner who competes in cross country, road running and in middle-distance and long-distance track events. At club level, she represents Sporting CP.
Andrew Lemoncello is a Scottish long distance runner who competes in the 3000 metres steeplechase and the marathon events. He won a team junior gold medal at the 2001 European Cross Country Championships and won a scholarship to attend Florida State University in 2004. At Florida State he was second in the NCAA Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the steeplechase.
Nadia Ejjafini is a Moroccan-born professional long-distance runner. She switched nationality from her birth country to Bahrain in 2003, and later became an Italian citizen by marriage in 2009.
Emily Chebet Muge is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who specialises in the 10,000 metres and cross country running. She is a two-time winner of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, being the gold medallist in 2010 and 2013.
Mary Teresa Cullen is an Irish long-distance runner who specializes in the 3000 metres and 5000 metres on the track, and cross country running. She holds the Irish record over 3000 m indoors.
Geoffrey Kiprono Mutai is a Kenyan long distance runner who specialises in road running competitions. On 18 April 2011 at the Boston Marathon, Mutai ran the fastest marathon ever at the time in a time of 2 hours 3 minutes 2 seconds, though the time was not recognised by the International Association of Athletics Federations as a world record since the Boston course does not meet the criteria to be eligible for the mark.
Belaynesh Oljira Jemama is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who competes mainly in 10K and half marathon races. She represented her country at the 2012 Summer Olympics, the 2013 World Championships and the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 2011 and 2013.
Gemma Steel is a British long-distance runner who competes in road running and cross country running competitions. She was the 2014 gold medallist at the European Cross Country Championships. She has represented Great Britain internationally in cross country, road and track events. She has won at three of the Great Run series events: the Great Ireland Run, Great Birmingham Run and Great Yorkshire Run. She has also won the Bristol Half Marathon and placed seventh at the 2012 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships.
Annette Sergent is a French former long-distance runner. She represented her country three times at the Summer Olympics, but it was in cross country running that she had her greatest success. She became the first Frenchwoman to win a world title in the sport at the 1987 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and won for a second time in 1989. In addition to these victories, she made eleven appearances at the competition and placed third in both 1986 and 1988.
The Corrida de Houilles, officially Corrida pédestre internationale de Houilles, is an annual 10K run that takes place at the end of December in Houilles, France.
Munyo Solomon Mutai is a Ugandan long-distance runner.
Paskalia Chepkorir Kipkoech is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes mainly in half marathon races. Her personal best of 67:17 minutes ranks her within the top twenty all-time for the distance. She was the bronze medallist at the 2012 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships.
Susan Krumins is a Dutch middle- and long-distance runner. She was the 5000 metres bronze medalist at the 2014 European Athletics Championships and also won a 3000 metres bronze at the 2014 IAAF Continental Cup.
Peres Jepchirchir is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner who competes mainly in road running competitions. She won the gold medal in the women's marathon at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Jepchirchir was the champion at the 2016 and 2020 World Half Marathon Championships. She claimed victories at the 2021 New York City and 2022 Boston Marathon and finished third at the 2023 London Marathon. She claimed a further victory at the 2024 London Marathon, finishing in two hours, 16 minutes and 16 seconds and breaking the women’s only world record.
Rakiya Maraoui Quétier is a Moroccan-born French former long-distance runner who competed mainly in the marathon and cross country running. She competed in the marathon at the World Athletics Championships in 1993 and 2003, and represented France at the 2004 Summer Olympics. She was a three-time participant at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and ran at the 1998 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. She was the marathon gold medallist at the 1989 Jeux de la Francophonie. On the road running circuit, she was the winner of the 1990 Roma-Ostia Half Marathon and 2001 Corrida de Houilles
Letesenbet Gidey is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. In the 10,000 metres, she is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist, 2019 World silver medallist, and 2022 World champion. Her record of 29.01.03 is the second fastest time ever, just recently broken by Kenyan rival Beatrice Chebet. Letesenbet is the first athlete ever, male or female, to hold the 5000m, 10000m, and half marathon world records, simultaneously.
Stacey Chepkemboi Ndiwa is a Kenyan female long-distance runner who competes across cross country, track and road running disciplines. She was a gold medallist at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in the 1500 metres and was a team silver medallist at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 2015, where she was fifth individually. She was also a bronze medallist in the 1500 m at the 2011 African Junior Athletics Championships.
Bastien Augusto is a French middle-distance runner. He helped his team to three medals at the European Cross Country Championships, including leading his team to a gold medal in the 2022 edition. Beginning his career in the 10K run, he has exhibited range from that distance (27:40) to the 1500 m (3:34.85).
