Live Four was a compilation CD of live Coil songs. This CD was the first of four releases in a series. Its counterparts are Live Three , Live Two and Live One . This album was later released as part of Coil's box set The Key to Joy Is Disobedience .
The performance dates for "Bang Bang" and "An Unearthly Red" were performed in Prague on 27 October 2002. "I Am Angie Bowie (Sine Waves)", "Last Rites of Spring", "Are You Shivering", "Amethyst Deceivers", "The Universe is a Haunted House", "Ostia" and "I Don't Want To Be The One" are from a performance that took place on 29 October 2002 at Flex in Vienna, Austria.
"I Am Angie Bowie (Sine Waves)", "The Universe is a Haunted House", "Bang Bang" and "An Unearthly Red" are songs that have never had a proper studio release. "Last Rites of Spring" was originally released in studio form as "The Last Rites of Spring" on the album Gold Is the Metal (With the Broadest Shoulders) . "Are You Shivering?" was originally released in studio form on the album Musick to Play in the Dark Vol. 1 . "Amethyst Deceivers" was originally released on the CD/7" single Autumn Equinox . The version of the song on this album is a slower and much more like "The Last Amethyst Deceiver" on The Ape of Naples than the original version. "A Warning from the Sun" was originally released in studio form as "A Warning from the Sun (For Fritz)" on the CD single "Summer Solstice". "Ostia" was originally released in studio form on "Ostia (The Death of Pasolini)" on the album Horse Rotorvator . The version of the song on this album is much slower than the original. "I Don't Want To Be The One" was originally released in studio form as Astral Disaster . "Bang Bang" is a cover of an old song by Sonny Bono. The lyrics to "An Unearthly Red" allude to a statement made by George W. Bush saying, "God told me to end the tyranny in Iraq". The song was released on a CD by Danny Hyde as "An Unhealthy Red".
On the back on the CD, there is notice of an upcoming DVD and vinyl release of the compilation. The vinyl edition was never released, but videos of both shows (the same songs as on the CD, with the exception of "Last Rites of Spring", which is unique to the CD) are included in the Colour Sound Oblivion 16DVD set.
According to the liner notes: "Coil were: Jhon Balance, Peter Christopherson, Ossian Brown & Thighpaulsandra.
Rites of Spring was an American post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C., in the mid-1980s, known for their energetic live performances. Along with Embrace, and Beefeater, they were one of the mainstay acts of the 1985 Revolution Summer movement which took place within the Washington, D.C. hardcore punk scene. Musically, Rites of Spring increased the frenetic violence and visceral passion of hardcore while simultaneously experimenting with its compositional rules. Lyrically, they also shifted hardcore into intensely personal realms and, in doing so, are often considered the first emo band but Rites of Spring itself rejected any association between themselves and emo genres.
Coil were an experimental music group, founded in 1982 in London, England and concluded in 2005. Initially envisioned as a solo project by musician John Balance, Coil evolved into a full-time project with the addition of his partner Peter Christopherson. Balance and Christopherson were the only constant members; other contributors throughout the band's career included Stephen Thrower, Danny Hyde, Drew McDowall, William Breeze, Thighpaulsandra, and Ossian Brown. Coil's work explored themes related to alchemy, the occult, and sexuality, influencing genres such as goth rock, neofolk, and dark ambient. AllMusic called the group "one of the most beloved, mythologized groups to emerge from the British post-industrial scene."
Goats Head Soup is the eleventh British and thirteenth American studio album by the English rock band the Rolling Stones. It was released in August 1973 by Rolling Stones Records. Like its predecessor Exile on Main St., the band composed and recorded much of it outside of the United Kingdom due to their status as tax exiles. Goats Head Soup was recorded in Jamaica, the United States and the United Kingdom. The album contains 10 tracks, including the lead single "Angie" which went to number one as a single in the US and the top five in the UK.
Never Let Me Down is the 17th studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 20 April 1987 by EMI America Records. Bowie conceived the album as the foundation for a theatrical world tour, writing and recording most of the songs in Switzerland. He considered the record a return to rock and roll music. Three singles were released from the album, "Day-In Day-Out", "Time Will Crawl" and "Never Let Me Down", which all reached the UK Top 40.
Autumn Equinox: Amethyst Deceivers is part three of the four part Seasons collective created by Coil.
"Breaking Glass" is a song by the English singer/songwriter David Bowie. It was co-written by Bowie, bassist George Murray and drummer Dennis Davis in September 1976. Originally a track on Bowie's 1977 album Low, a reworked version of the song was a regular on the Isolar II Tour. A live version from that tour was used as the lead track on a 7" EP to promote his second live album, Stage in 1978. The EP reached number 54 on the UK Singles Chart in December 1978.
"Amsterdam" is a song by Jacques Brel. It combines a powerful melancholic crescendo with a rich poetic account of the exploits of sailors on shore leave in Amsterdam. Musically, it takes its base melody line from the melody of the English folk song Greensleeves.
Dylan Lee Howe is an English drummer, bandleader, session musician and composer. The son of guitarist Steve Howe with whom he has sometimes collaborated, Dylan is also noted for his work with rock band the Blockheads, in addition to his own work as a jazz bandleader and prolific session work with a variety of musicians. He was also the brother of musician Virgil Howe.
Musick to Play in the Dark Vol. 1 is a studio album by Coil that was released in September 1999. It is the first album in the Musick to Play in the Dark series, with the second volume being released in 2000. It was remastered by Drew McDowall and reissued by Dais Records in 2020.
Gold Is the Metal was the third album released by Coil in the year 1987. It is not a proper follow-up to 1986's Horse Rotorvator, but more a collection of outtakes and demos from the Scatology, Horse Rotorvator and Hellraiser soundtrack sessions. Some obviously correspond to earlier and later released material, while others do not appear anywhere else. "The Last Rites of Spring" includes a sample by Stravinsky, also used extensively in "The Anal Staircase".
The Ape of Naples is the final studio album by English experimental group Coil. The album was the definitive effort of primary Coil musician Peter Christopherson, who compiled material from 1993 to 2004 to reassemble and rework it into a coherent final album. It was produced and released following the death of co-lead artist and lead vocalist John Balance, who died on 13 November 2004. The title of the album was originally intended to be Fire of the Mind.
A Guide for Beginners: The Voice of Silver was one of two CD compilations released to mark Coil's first performance in Russia. It is a collection of their ambient music style works. The titles were devised by the Russian musician and Coil collaborator Ivan Pavlov.
Moon's Milk is a release by Coil that compiles four of their singles onto a double CD. The two disc album compiles the CD versions of Spring Equinox, Summer Solstice, Autumn Equinox and Winter Solstice. The album also has a live version of "Amethyst Deceivers" hidden at the end of the first disc, following several minutes of silence after "A Warning From The Sun ". The release was given the catalog number ESKATON 023 and features artwork by Steven Stapleton.
