Owens Valley is an arid valley of the Owens River in eastern California in the United States. It is located to the east of the Sierra Nevada, west of the White Mountains and Inyo Mountains, and is split between the Great Basin Desert and the Mojave Desert. The mountain peaks on the West side reach above 14,000 feet (4,300 m) in elevation, while the floor of the Owens Valley is about 4,000 feet (1,200 m), making the valley the deepest in the United States. The Sierra Nevada casts the valley in a rain shadow, which makes Owens Valley "the Land of Little Rain". The bed of Owens Lake, now a predominantly dry endorheic alkali flat, sits on the southern end of the valley.

College of the Desert (COD) is a public community college in Palm Desert, California. COD enrolls about 12,500 students, of which around one third attend college full-time. Inyo National Forest is a United States National Forest covering parts of the eastern Sierra Nevada of California and the White Mountains of California and Nevada. The forest, encompassing much of the Owens Valley, was established by Theodore Roosevelt as a way of sectioning off land to accommodate the Los Angeles Aqueduct project in 1907, making the Inyo National Forest one of the least wooded forests in the U.S. National Forest system.

Vista Del Lago High School is a high school located in Folsom, California. It is one of five high schools in the Folsom Cordova Unified School District. The school opened in 2007 to serve the southern side of Folsom and to relieve overcrowding at Folsom High School. The official school colors are navy blue and silver. Established in 1945, the school is located in the upper Mojave Desert and is adjacent to the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. It derives its name from U.S. Navy officer Admiral Sherman E. Burroughs, who served as the first commanding officer of the base at China Lake. The school's mascot, the Burro, is taken from the animal which was imported to the area.

The Hi-Lo League is a high school athletic conference that is affiliated with the CIF Central Section (CIF-CS). Members are small schools in the remote desert regions of eastern California. The league and its schools joined the CIF-CS in 2017; previously, they were part of the CIF Southern Section. The Hi-Lo League sponsors 8-man football. The two farthest schools, Lee Vining and Baker Valley, are 340 miles (550 km) apart—more than 6 hours one-way.
