Palos Township is one of 29 townships in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2020 census, its population was 56,836, with its most populous municipality being Palos Hills. The vast majority of the township's population resides in its eastern half; the half west of La Grange Road consists of the Palos Forest Preserves, a section of the Cook County Forest Preserves. In 1850 the small town of Trenton, Illinois changed its name to Palos; this recommendation was made by M.S. Powell, the local postmaster, whose ancestor supposedly sailed with Christopher Columbus from Palos de la Frontera. When it incorporated as a village in 1914, Palos officially became Palos Park. Nearby communities incorporated later: Hickory Hills, in 1951, and Palos Hills, in 1958. All three municipalities lie completely or substantially within Palos Township. Palos Heights, partially in Worth Township, incorporated in 1959.

LaGrange Highlands School District 106 is an elementary school district based in La Grange Highlands, an outlying suburb of Chicago located in Cook County, Illinois, near the border with DuPage County. District 106 is composed of two schools: one elementary school and one middle school, each named for the district. The school has 975 students enrolled, and serves 961 of those students currently. The district elementary school, Highlands Elementary School, serves students ranging from prekindergarten to grade four under direction of principal Laura Magruder. District students in grades five through eight move to Highlands Middle School, which is headed by principal Megan VerVynck and assistant principal Stetson Steele. John Munch serves as the superintendent of the district. Highlands feeds into Lyons Township Highschool.

Central Stickney is an unincorporated community in Stickney Township, Cook County, Illinois, a half mile north of Midway International Airport. It consists of the areas around Central Avenue, between I-55 to the north and 51st Street, its southern boundary; east of Central, the northern boundary is roughly drawn between 47th and 48th Streets. It is bordered by the village of Forest View to the north and the Chicago community of Garfield Ridge to the south and east. The area consists of a residential neighborhood of approximately 150 acres to the east of Central Avenue and a business park to the west, as well as several small businesses along Central. It is served by the Central Stickney Fire Protection District and the Central Stickney Park District. Central Stickney has been trying to incorporate for many years, but faces possible annexation to the City of Chicago.
