Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar is an Indian academician,electrical engineer and education administrator. He is currently the chairman of University Grants Commission,since February 2022. [1] He is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi. [2] [3] Kumar also served as the VC of JNU from in January 2016 to 2022. [4] [5]
Kumar was born in Mamidala village in Tipparthi mandal,Nalgonda district,Telangana. He did his Masters and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology,Madras,followed by post doctoral research at University of Waterloo,Canada. [2] [6] He works in the area of nanoscience and nanotechnology (nano-electronic devices,nanoscale devices,device design and power semiconductor devices). [2] [7] He is currently a fellow at Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers,National Academy of Sciences,India and Indian National Academy of Engineering among others. He is Chairman of the governing body of National Council of Science Museums. He has received the "ISA-VSI TechnoMentor Award",with the award being presented by Dr. R. Chidambaram (Principal Scientific Advisor to Government of India). [2]
He was selected as the Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University from among four others including Rameshwar Nath Koul Bamezai,Virander Singh Chauhan and Ramakrishna Ramaswamy. [8]
During his tenure as VC,he has often been in the news for many controversies happening on his watch such as the 2016 JNU sedition row,the disappearance of a student Najeeb Ahmad and the 2020 JNU attacks. Critics say that he is "implementing the agenda of the RSS",the reason why he has been made VC in the first place. [9] [10] JNU Students' Unions called for his resignation following the attacks on JNU in January 2020. [9]

The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are centrally funded technical institutes under the ownership of the Ministry of Education,Government of India. They are governed by the National Institutes of Technology,Science Education,and Research Act,2007,which declared them institutions of national importance and laid down their powers,duties,and framework for governance. The act lists 31 NITs. Each NIT is autonomous and linked to the others through a common council known as the Council of NITSER,which oversees their administration. All NITs are funded by the Government of India.

Sushanta Kumar Bhattacharyya,Baron Bhattacharyya,,was a British-Indian engineer,educator and government advisor. In 1980,he became Professor of Manufacturing Systems at the University of Warwick and founded the Warwick Manufacturing Group. In 2004,he was made a life peer and became a member of the House of Lords.
Vijay Pandurang Bhatkar is an Indian computer scientist,IT leader and educationalist. He is best known as the architect of India's national initiative in supercomputing where he led the development of Param supercomputers. He is a Padma Shri,Padma Bhushan,and Maharashtra Bhushan awardee. Indian computer magazine Dataquest placed him among the pioneers of India's IT industry. He was the founder and executive director of Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and is currently working on developing exascale supercomputing for India.
Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU) formerly known as Harcourt Butler Technological Institute (HBTI) is a premier state Technical University in Kanpur,Uttar Pradesh,India. The HBTU was named after Mr.Spencer Harcourt Butler,Governor of the United Provinces in British India. Its programs have been conferred in autonomous status under the university. It is one of the oldest engineering institute in the country and holds NAAC A+ accreditation and ISO 9001:2000 certification. It offers Bachelors,Masters,and Doctoral programs in engineering,natural sciences and humanities as well as Masters programs in Computer Application (MCA) and Business Administration (MBA).
Jabalpur Engineering College (JEC) is an institute located in Jabalpur,Madhya Pradesh,India. It is the oldest technical institution in central India and the 15th-oldest in India. It is the first institute of India to have started the Electronics &Telecommunication engineering education in the country,and also the last educational institution to be set up by the British in India. The Government of Madhya Pradesh is in the process of converting it into a Technical University.

Talat Ahmad is an Indian Earth Scientist and former Professor at the Department of Geology,University of Delhi. He served as Chairman of Governing body which oversees Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology,Dehradun from 1 December 2021 and served the office till 30 November 2027. Previously,he commenced his second stint as vice chancellor of University of Kashmir on 6 August 2018 and served the office till 20 May 2022. After serving as vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia,he resigned from the post a few months short of his full term. He was shortlisted by a committee constituted by the governor to shortlist a panel for the post. He had earlier taken over as Vice-chancellor of University of Kashmir from Professor Riyaz Punjabi on 1 June 2011. Prior to this,he was teaching geology at the University of Delhi.
Damodar Acharya is an Indian engineer and educationist. He served as the director of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur from July 2007 to 30 June 2012. The government nominated Acharya as a director on the central board of the Reserve Bank of India in October 2012.
V Ramgopal Rao is an Indian academic currently serving as the Group Vice Chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology and Science,Pilani for campuses located in Pilani,Dubai,Goa,Hyderabad and Mumbai. He was previously the Director of IIT,Delhi for six years during 2016-2021.
Ram Ramaswamy is an Indian scientist and professor of chemistry at JNU.
Munirathna Anandakrishnan was an Indian civil engineer,educationist,a chairman of the Indian Institute of Technology,Kanpur and a vice-chancellor of Anna University. He was also an Advisor to the Government of Tamil Nadu on Information Technology and e-Governance. A winner of the National Order of Scientific Merit (Brazil),he was honored by the Government of India,in 2002,with Padma Shri,the fourth highest Indian civilian award.
Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad is a public autonomous engineering and research institute located in Palakkad,Kerala. It is one of India's 23 IITs. Proposed in the 2014 Union budget of India,IIT Palakkad was established in 2015 as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.
Sudhir Kumar Sopory is an Indian educationist,plant physiologist,scientist and former vice chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University,New Delhi. He is known to be the first to purify a protein kinase C activity from plants and is credited with the identification of topoisomerase as a substrate of protein kinase C. He is an elected Fellow of several major Indian science academies and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and is a recipient of many honours,including the 1987 Shanti Swarup Bhatangar Prize,the highest Indian award in the science and technology categories. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri,in 2007,for his contributions to science and technology.
Suhash Chandra Dutta Roy is an Indian electrical engineer and a former professor and head of the department of electrical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology,Delhi. He is known for his studies on analog and digital signal processing and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences,Indian National Science Academy,National Academy of Sciences,India as well as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers,Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers,Systems Society of India and Acoustical Society of India,The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research,the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research,awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology,one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Engineering Sciences in 1981.
Rakesh Bhatnagar is an Indian educationist,scientist,and the current Vice Chancellor of Amity University Rajasthan. Previously he has served as the 27th Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University.
On 5 January 2020,more than 50 masked people armed with rods,sticks and acid attacked the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University,Delhi,and injured more than 39 students and teachers. Many students received serious injuries. Professors who tried to intervene and protect the students,as well as ambulances carrying injured individuals,were attacked. Eyewitnesses stated that police within the campus did not intervene to stop the mob. After attacking residents of the university campus for three hours,the mob escaped;none of its members was arrested or detained. All 36 students who were injured and admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences,New Delhi (AIIMS) were discharged within 24 hours.
His detractors say the vice chancellor, who took charge in January 2016, is implementing the agenda of the RSS and has been brought in by the Union government specifically for this purpose. However, he has repeatedly disavowed associations with any organisation.
