MI New York is an American professional Twenty20 cricket team based in New York City that competes in Major League Cricket (MLC). [1] The team was established in June 2023 as one of six inaugural teams. [2] The team's planned home ground is in Marine Park in Brooklyn. [3]
MI New York is owned by Indiawin Sports, who also owns teams that compete in the IPL, SA20, and ILT20. [4] It has a minor league affiliate, the Manhattan Yorkers, that competes in Minor League Cricket (MiLC). [5] During the 2023 season, the team defeated the Seattle Orcas in the finals to take home the inaugural title. [6] The team is coached by former South African spinner Robin Peterson. [7]
In March 2023, it was reported that the Mukesh Ambani-owned Indiawin Sports would be the primary owner of Major League Cricket's New York franchise, called MI New York. [8] Nita Ambani later remarked in a press release that she was "thrilled" about the establishment of the team and the opportunity to introduce cricket to New York. [9]
MLC's inaugural domestic players' draft was held on March 19, 2023 at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, ahead of the start of the season on July 4. [10] The team picked, amongst others, American mainstays Steven Taylor and Monank Patel.
MI New York's full squad was released on June 14, with Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, New Zealand's Trent Boult, and South Africa's Kagiso Rabada all in the mix. The team also appointed West Indies' Kieron Pollard as their team captain. [11]
During the season, New York began their campaign with a 22-run defeat to San Francisco. [12] [13] This was followed by a 105-run win over Los Angeles in their second game, [14] a 17-run loss to Texas in their third, [15] and a 8-wicket win over Washington in their fourth. [16] In their final group stage game, they lost to table-toppers Seattle by 2 wickets. Despite the loss, they nevertheless still qualified for the play-offs. [17] In the play-offs, New York recorded back-to-back victories against Washington and Texas in the Eliminator and Challenger matches, respectively, to go to the finals, [18] where they defeated Seattle to claim the inaugural title.
