The MTV Video Music Awards is an award show presented by the cable channel MTV to honor the best in the music video medium. Originally conceived as an alternative to the Grammy Awards, the annual MTV Video Music Awards ceremony has often been called the "Super Bowl for youth", an acknowledgment of the VMA ceremony's ability to draw millions of youth from teens to 20-somethings each year. By 2001, the VMA had become a coveted award. The statue given to winners is an astronaut on the moon, one of the earliest representations of MTV, and was colloquially called a "moonman". However, in 2017, Chris McCarthy, the president of MTV, stated that the statue would be called a "Moon Person" from then on. The statue was conceived by Manhattan Design—also designers of the original MTV logo—based on the 1981 "Top of the Hour" animation created by Fred Seibert, produced by Alan Goodman, and produced by Buzz Potamkin at Buzzco Associates. The statue is now made by New York firm Society Awards. Since the 2006 ceremony, viewers are able to vote for their favorite videos in all general categories by visiting MTV's website.
The MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist has been given out since the first annual MTV Video Music Awards in 1984. Until 2006, the award was named Best New Artist in a Video. In 2007 its name was changed to Best New Artist, as the category underwent a format change to recognize the artist's body of work for the full year rather than a specific video. For the 2008 ceremony, the award retained its 2007 name but returned to the format of awarding a specific video rather than the artist's full body of work. The category was later renamed Artist to Watch through 2013 to 2015 while still keeping the format of an award going to a particular video. In 2020, the Best New Artist award merged with the Push Artist of the Year award (2018-2019) to create the Push Best New Artist award. In 2021, MTV returned the category to its original name, thus separating it from the MTV Push initiative, which again received its own category.
The MTV Video Music Award for Best Pop was first given out in 1999 under the name of Best Pop Video, as MTV began to put several teen pop acts in heavy rotation. Nominations, however, were not just limited to pop acts, as dance, R&B, pop/rock, and reggaeton artists have also received nominations throughout the award's history. In 2007, MTV eliminated this award along with all of the genre categories, but it returned in 2008. In 2017, the word "Video" was removed from the names of all genre categories, leaving this award with its current name: Best Pop.

Tokio Hotel is a German rock band, founded in 2001 by singer Bill Kaulitz, guitarist Tom Kaulitz, drummer Gustav Schäfer, and bassist Georg Listing. Their sound encompasses multiple genres, including pop rock, alternative rock, and electronic rock. They have had four number one singles and have released three number one albums in their native country. The band has sold more than 10 million records worldwide. After recording an unreleased demo-album under the name "Devilish" and having their contract with Sony BMG Germany terminated, the band released their first German-language album, Schrei, as Tokio Hotel on Universal Music Germany in 2005. Schrei sold more than half-a-million copies worldwide and spawned four top-five singles in both Germany and Austria.
"Durch den Monsun" and "Monsoon" are songs by German rock band Tokio Hotel. The German version of "Durch den Monsun" was released as the band's debut single in 2005, from their debut album Schrei. A remix of the song was made with Japanese lyrics, and an English version named "Monsoon" was later recorded and included in the band's first English album, Scream, and released as their first English single in 2007. Early August 2020, Tokio Hotel announced new versions of "Durch den Monsun" and "Monsoon" to celebrate the single's 15th anniversary. "Durch den Monsun 2020" and "Monsoon 2020" were respectively released on October 2, 2020 and October 16, 2020.
The 1984 MTV Video Music Awards aired live on September 14, 1984. The inaugural ceremony honored the best music videos released between May 2, 1983 and May 2, 1984, and was hosted by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
The MTV Europe Music Award for Best Video is an award category presented at the MTV Europe Music Awards. The award was first presented in 1994 under the name Best Director, awarded to Whale's "Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe". This is the only MTV EMA award - excluding special awards - whose winner is chosen by MTV, rather than by the public. "Hey Ya!", "Born This Way" and "Havana" are the only music videos to also win Best Song. The artists with the most wins are Katy Perry, Justice and Massive Attack with two wins each. Katy Perry,Beyoncé,Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift are the artists with the most nominations, with five each. Kendrick Lamar and Taylor Swift are the only performers to have won the award for a video they co-directed: Lamar for "Humble" in 2017 and Swift for "ME!" in 2019.

It was first awarded in 1995, which Take That won for their Nobody Else Tour.Lasting from March to October 1995. U2 and Ed Sheeran won the award the most times, both receiving two awards. The award was briefly named Best Headliner for the 2007 and 2008 ceremonies.

British boy band One Direction are currently the act with the most award wins in this category, receiving a total of three.

The 2010 MTV Europe Music Awards took place on 7 November 2010 at Caja Mágica in Madrid, Spain. The awards ceremony was presented by Eva Longoria and Justin Bieber was the official MTV EMA 2010 digital host. Nominations were announced on 20 September. Lady Gaga topped the list of nominations with ten, followed by Katy Perry with five, Eminem with four and Thirty Seconds to Mars & Muse with three apiece.
The 2019 MTV EMAs was held at the FIBES Conference and Exhibition Centre in Seville, Spain, on 3 November 2019. The host of the ceremony was Becky G. This was the fourth time, as well as the second consecutive year, that Spain hosted the awards show. It was the first time that a country hosted back-to-back editions of the award show.
The 2020 MTV Video Music Awards were held on August 30, 2020. Keke Palmer hosted the 37th annual ceremony, which was presented primarily from New York City, but with no in-person ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the first VMA ceremony to be broadcast on The CW.
The 2020 MTV Europe Music Awards were held on 8 November 2020. The show was hosted by Little Mix, making them the first group to ever host the show, however only three members of the group, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall, appeared; Jesy Nelson did not participate due to health reasons. In similar fashion to its American counterpart held earlier this year, performances for the show were filmed at various locations around Europe due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The two-hour long show was broadcast in 180 countries.
