MV Banglar Samriddhi is a Bangladeshi bulk carrier built in 2018 which was struck by a missile in the Black Sea during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Banglar Samriddhi is an LR-class bulk carrier built by the Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilders in Jingjiang, China. It has a beam of 32 m (105 ft 0 in), is 180 m (590 ft 7 in) long, and has a draft of 6.5 m (21 ft 4 in). Its gross tonnage is 25,818 GT and it has a deadweight of 38,894 tons. [1] In 2022 it was valuated at $21.5 million with a $6 million scrap value. [2]
Banglar Samriddhi was laid down in Jingjiang, China, and built by Jiansu New Yangzi Shipbuilding under the yard number 1237. The ship was completed on 18 September 2018 for the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation. [3]
On 24 February 2022, the Banglar Samriddhi arrived in the port of Olvia in the Black Sea bearing no cargo. It was intended to load ball clay and then steam for Italy. [4] However, when Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, the Banglar Samriddhi was stuck in port. On 1 March, the vessel was struck by a missile while still at anchor. One of its crew, third engineer Hadisur Rahman, was killed by the missile after it detonated on the bridge. The rest of the crew were unharmed and the fire on the ship was put out. [5] Following the incident, the vessel was left in port and its surviving 28 crewmembers were evacuated to Bangladesh. [4]
Hadisur Rahman was a 29-year-old sailor from Barguna. He had three younger siblings. Rahman admitted the Chattogram Marine Academy after scoring GPA-5 in SSC and HSC. Afterwards he joined Banglar Samriddhi as an engineer in 2018. On the vessel he was the third engineer. Rahman was the sole breadwinner for the family. He planned to build a new house for his family upon his return. [6] [7] [8] The body of Rahman was sent to Bangladesh and arrived in Dhaka via Romania and Turkey 3 March 2022. [9]
The Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, which owns the Banglar Samriddhi, announced that it would seek $22.4 million from its insurers, the Sadharan Bima Corporation and Tysers. The action represents the first marine insurance claim caused by the conflict in Ukraine. [4] Following the evacuation of the ship's sailors, Bangladesh also announced that it was abandoning the Banglar Samriddhi in Ukraine, a move approved by Ukrainian maritime authorities. [10]

The vessels are used to carry ready-made garments and other export items, and also to import crude oil from Saudi Arabia and UAE.
The Ukrainian patrol vessel Sloviansk (P190) was an Island-class patrol boat of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Originally named USCGC Cushing when in service with the United States Coast Guard, the vessel was acquired by Ukraine in 2018 and arrived in Ukraine on 21 October 2019. Sloviansk was sunk in combat on 3 March 2022 by a Russian air-to-surface missile.
Herakles was a pusher vessel owned by Finnish towing and marine salvage company Alfons Håkans Oy Ab. The ship, originally built as salvage tug Into in 1967, was converted to a pusher in 1991 to be chartered to Rautaruukki Oyj and later ESL Shipping Ltd as the third pusher vessel for the Finnpusku system, a Finnish integrated tug and barge system built in the mid-80s.

Both Sadharan Bima Corporation, the non-life insurer, and Jiban Bima Corporation, the life insurer, were created under the Insurance Corporation Act of 1973 of Bangladesh.
MV Millennial Spirit is a Moldovan chemical tanker which transports diesel fuel. Built in 1974, the ship was previously known as MV Freyja under the ownership of an Icelandic shipping firm. It was shelled and its crew was forced to abandon ship in the Black Sea during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to Ukrainian officials, the ship was shelled by Russian warships.
MV Namura Queen is a Japanese-owned, Panamanian-registered, and Philippine-operated bulk carrier cargo ship.
The Russian warship Moskva, the flagship of the Russian Navy's Black Sea Fleet, was attacked and sunk by Ukrainian forces on 14 April 2022 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian officials announced that their forces had hit and damaged it with two R-360 Neptune anti-ship missiles, and that the ship had then caught fire. The United States Department of Defense later confirmed this, and Russia reported that the ship had sunk in stormy seas after the fire reached munitions onboard and they exploded.
MV Yasa Jupiter is a Turkish-owned, Marshall Islands-flagged bulk carrier. It was the first merchant vessel damaged during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
MV Azburg was a Dominica-flagged general cargo ship that was sunk by Russian shelling while in port at Mariupol, Ukraine, on 5 April during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. It was built in The Netherlands in 1995 as Kroonborg.
Mohammad Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury is a retired Bangladeshi Civil Servant and former Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration. Prior to this appointment, he served as Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping and Local Government Division.
MV Rubymar was a Belize-flagged Handymax-size bulk carrier cargo ship completed in 1997. She previously sailed under the names Ken Shin from 1997, Chatham Island from 2009, and Ikaria Island from 2020, before being renamed Rubymar. On 18 February 2024, the ship was struck by a Houthi anti-ship missile during the Red Sea crisis while carrying a cargo of fertilizer. After being adrift for weeks, the ship sank on 2 March as a result of the strike, becoming the first vessel lost due to a Houthi attack during the crisis. The wreck poses a risk to navigation of the Red Sea, and also has the potential to cause environmental damage due to the leakage of its oil and fertilizer.
2024 in piracy included 33 reports of maritime piracy and armed robbery against ships to the International Maritime Bureau during the first quarter of the year. Incidents that happend in 2023 and soon is reported to happen 2026 Crew continued to suffer violence, with 35 seafarers taken hostage, nine kidnapped, and one of the most important casualties threatened during the first three months of the year.
On 12 June 2024, the Yemeni Houthi movement attacked the MV Tutor, a Liberia-flagged bulk carrier, in the southern Red Sea with an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) and an anti-ship missile, killing one crewmember. The vessel was seriously damaged, and later abandoned by her crew. She sank six days after the attacks. The attacks mark the first successful usage of a USV and the second sinking by the Houthis in the Red Sea crisis.
