Marchena minuta

Marchena is a genus of jumping spiders only found in the United States. Its only described species, M. minuta, [1] dwells on the barks of conifers along the west coast, especially California, Washington and Nevada. [2]

Contents

It forms a monophyletic group with the genera Afraflacilla , Pseudicius and Festucula . [3]

Description

This species can easily be distinguished from others in its range by the tubercles on the first femur of its first legs. [2] M. minuta has a body length of about 4 mm.

Name

The genus name is probably derived from the Spanish city of Marchena, Seville.[ citation needed ] As witnessed by other generic names, the describers had a habit of naming taxa after places unrelated to the species' distribution. The species name is Latin for "small, minute".

Afraflacilla Genus of spiders

Afraflacilla is a genus of the spider family Salticidae. Most species are distributed in Eastern to Northern Africa and Australia, with two species found in Europe. This genus was for a time included in the genus Pseudicius, and the boundaries between both genera are disputed. In 2016 Jerzy Prószyński erected the genus Psenuc for some borderline species. The name Afraflacilla is combined from Africa, where most earlier described species were found, and FlacillaSimon, 1901, an obsolete salticid genus now called FlacillulaStrand, 1932. This genus name is in turn derived from Aelia Flaccilla, wife of Roman Emperor Theodosius I. Afraflacilla, Pseudicius, Festucula and Marchena are close relatives and form a monophyletic group.

Artabrus is a genus of jumping spiders with only two species. The type species, Artabrus erythrocephalus, was described in 1846 by C. L. Koch as Plexippus erythrocephalus and transferred to his new genus Artabrus by Eugène Simon in 1902. It remained the only species in the genus until a second species was described in 2020.

Mopsolodes is a genus of South Pacific jumping spiders that was first described by Marek Michał Żabka in 1991. As of July 2019 it contains only two species, found only in Australia and Papua New Guinea: M. australensis and M. furculosus. The name is derived from the closely related genus Mopsus.

Nungia is a monotypic genus of Asian jumping spiders containing the single species, Nungia epigynalis. It was first described by Marek Michał Żabka in 1985 from a single 6 millimetres (0.24 in) long female, although males have subsequently been found. The name is derived from the Nùng people of Vietnam and China. The species name is derived from "epigyne".

Paraplatoides is a genus of South Pacific jumping spiders that was first described by Marek Michał Żabka in 1992.

Pseudicius Genus of spiders

Pseudicius is a genus of the jumping spiders first described by Eugène Simon in 1885. The name is combined of Greek pseudo "false" and the salticid genus name Icius. The small genus Wesolowskana should possibly be included in this genus. There is some dispute whether Afraflacilla is a distinct genus or should be included in Pseudicius. Festucula and Marchena are other close relatives, these genera form a monophyletic group.
