Marga Schiml (born 29 November 1945) is a German opera singer who sings mezzo-soprano and alto. She has appeared at major European opera houses and festivals, such as the Vienna State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Hamburg State Opera and La Scala, at the Salzburg Festival and the Bayreuth Festival. She is also an academic voice teacher.

Career

Born in Weiden, Upper Palatinate, Schiml studied at the Musikhochschule München with Hanno Blaschke. [1] She received a scholarship from Deutsche Grammophon. [2]

At the Salzburg Festival, she appeared in 1970 as Erste Dame in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte , in 1972 as Cherubino in his Le nozze di Figaro , [3] conducted by Herbert von Karajan, [2] and in 1984 and 1985 in scenic performances of Bach's St Matthew Passion . [3]

At the Bayreuth Festival, she performed several parts in the centenary production Jahrhundertring of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, directed by Patrice Chéreau and conducted by Pierre Boulez. [3] She performed first in 1978 the part of the Rhinemaiden Floßhilde in Das Rheingold and Götterdämmerung , and from 1979 the valkyrie Siegrune in Die Walküre . [3] She appears in the three parts on the DVD of the production. [4] From 1979, she appeared as a flower maiden in Parsifal , from 1981 as Magdalene in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , and from 1998 as Mary in Der fliegende Holländer . [3]

Schiml appeared at La Scala as Dorabella in Mozart's Cosi fan tutte , conducted by Karl Böhm. [2] She performed the part of Fricka in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Teatro Regio in Turin in 1986, and Annina in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 1989. In concert, she sang, for example, in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, conducted by Karajan, and his Missa Solemnis, conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch. She performed Bach's Christmas Oratorio and Mass in B minor, conducted by Karl Richter. She sang Mahler's Eighth Symphony with both Seiji Ozawa and Gustav Kuhn, and Mendelssohn's Elias with Otmar Suitner. [2] She was a soloist in the ballet version of Bach's St Matthew Passion by John Neumeier in 1981, along with Peter Schreier as the Evangelist, Bernd Weikl as the vox Christi , Mitsuko Shirai and Franz Grundheber, conducted by Günter Jena. [5] In a concert with explanations (Gesprächskonzert) in Frankfurt's Alte Oper on 24 January 1988, she performed Bach's cantata Wachet! Betet! Betet! Wachet! BWV 70, and Johann Christian Bach's Dies irae with Helmuth Rilling and the Gächinger Kantorei. [6]

Schiml was a professor of voice at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe from 1987 onwards. She retired in 2011, but still trains young singers. Among her students was Maria Radner. In 1999 she was awarded the Order of Merit of Germany. [2]

Selected recordings

Schiml recorded masses by Mozart, masses by Carl Maria von Weber, [1] and masses by Bruckner with Eugen Jochum. In opera, she performed in Puccini's Suor Angelica with Lucia Popp in the title role), conducted by Giuseppe Patané, for example. She also appeared in radio and TV productions. [2]

Gustav Neidlinger was a German bass-baritone, known as a performer of Wagner's villains, especially Alberich and Klingsor, from the early 1950s to the early 1970s. Born in Mainz, Neidlinger studied at the Frankfurt conservatory, where he was trained by Otto Rottsieper. He debuted in 1931 at the Stadttheater in Mainz, where he sang until 1934. In 1934 and 1935, he performed at the Stadttheater in Plauen, Sachsen. From 1935 to 1950, he was a member of the Hamburg opera, where In 1937 he took part in the world premiere of the opera Schwarzer Peter by Norbert Schultze. In 1950, he joined the Stuttgart Staatsoper, where he became very popular and was, in 1977, named an honorary member. In Stuttgart, he sang in Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress. In 1956 he moved to the Vienna Staatsoper, where he had sung as early as 1941. He also sang at the Paris Opéra (1953–67) and at Covent Garden in London in tandem with the Stuttgart ensemble. He was honored with the title German Kammersänger in 1952.

Franz Mazura was an Austrian bass-baritone opera singer and actor. He performed at the Bayreuth Festival from 1971 for 25 years and at the Metropolitan Opera for 15 years. He was made a Kammersänger in 1980 and an Honorary Member of the Nationaltheater Mannheim in 1990. He most often played villains and strange characters, with signature roles including Klingsor in Wagner's Parsifal. Mazura took part in world premieres, such as the double role of Dr. Schön and Jack the Ripper in the world premiere of the completed version of Alban Berg's Lulu at the Paris Opera in 1979, and as Abraham in Giorgio Battistelli's Lot in 2017. Two of his recordings received Grammy Awards. His voice was described as with dark timbre, powerful and like granite, with perfect diction. His acting ability was described as "well-supplied with vivid imaginative touches, whether deployed in comic roles or characters of inexorable malevolence. Mazura could achieve more impact with a lifted eyebrow or a belligerently thrust chin than many artists could with a ten-minute monologue." He had a long career, appearing at the Staatsoper Berlin the night before his 95th birthday.

Hanna Schwarz is a German mezzo-soprano and contralto singer in opera and concert. In 1976 she performed the roles of Fricka and Erda in the centenary Jahrhundertring production at the Bayreuth Festival, directed by Patrice Chéreau.

Lioba Braun is a German opera singer and academic teacher at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. Based at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, she has appeared mostly in mezzo-soprano parts at major opera houses and festivals. She became internationally known appearing as Brangäne at the Bayreuth Festival in 1994, and performed the soprano part of Isolde on stage first in 2012.

Cornelia Wulkopf is a German operatic mezzo-soprano and contralto. A long-time member of the Bavarian State Opera, she has performed leading parts at international opera houses and festivals. She made her debut at the Bayreuth Festival in the Jahrhundertring and sang in Franz Schmidt's Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln at the Salzburg Festival.

Hedwig Mathilde Plümacher was a German operatic singer who appeared on stage as Hetty Plümacher. A long-term member of the Staatstheater Stuttgart, she also performed at international festivals and major opera houses, as well as recording music.

Ingrid Haubold is a German operatic soprano. After beginning her career in Munich and continuing with German companies, she moved on to major international opera houses, appearing as Isolde in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde at the Teatro Real in Madrid in 1986, as Senta in Der fliegende Holländer at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, and in the title role of Beethoven's Fidelio at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

Horst Laubenthal, real name Horst Neumaier, is a German operatic tenor and academic voice teacher. He is known internationally, both as an opera singer especially in Mozart roles such as Belmonte, Don Ottavio and Tamino, and as a concert and recital singer, with a focus on works by Johann Sebastian Bach. He has appeared at major opera houses and festivals, including the Glyndebourne Festival and the Salzburg Festival, and made many recordings, including rarely performed works such as Korngold's Violanta.
