Mark Jefferson Golding (born 19 July 1965) is a Jamaican politician who has been Opposition Leader of Jamaica and President of the People's National Party since November 2020,following the 2020 general election. [1] Previously an attorney and investment banker,he was a member of the Senate of Jamaica from 2007 to 2017 and served as Minister of Justice from 2012 to 2016. He was elected as Member of Parliament for South St Andrew in 2017 and is a member of the People's National Party (PNP). [2] [3]
On 7 November 2020,Mark Golding was elected as the 6th president of the PNP after polling 1740 delegate votes to defeat Lisa Hanna who polled 1440 in an election that saw 96% voter turnout amongst delegates in the 2020 People's National Party leadership election. [4]
Golding was born in 1965 in Kingston,Jamaica. [5] He is the younger of two children born to Patricia ( née Levy) and Sir John Golding. His mother was born in England,the daughter of a Jamaican doctor from Westmoreland Parish and his Australian wife. His father was born in England and moved to Jamaica in 1953 where he became a pioneering orthopaedic surgeon and rehabilitation physician. His paternal grandparents were Lithuanian Jews who arrived in the United Kingdom in the 1890s. [6] [7]
Golding was educated at Mona Prep,Campion College,Jamaica,Marlborough College,University of Oxford and University College London. [8]
Golding was admitted to the bar in 1990 and joined the Hart Muirhead Fatta Law firm. In 1993,He co-founded Dehring Bunting &Golding Limited,Jamaica's first private sector investment bank which became one of the leading financial institutions in the Caribbean. [9] Over the course of his career,Golding has served as a director at GraceKennedy Limited Caribbean Information,Credit Rating Services Limited,and the Bank of Nova Scotia under Scotia Limited. Golding is also the chairman of the Mona Rehabilitation Foundation and of Arnett Gardens F.C. In 2010,Golding co-founded Proven Investment Limited,a publicly listed investment company. [10] [11]
Golding was appointed to the Senate of Jamaica in 2007 by then-prime minister Portia Simpson-Miller,who named him as the Minister of Justice after the PNP electoral victory in the 2011 Jamaican general election. He was also named Chairman of the Legislation Committee of Cabinet. During this 4-year term,121 Acts of Parliament were passed. Golding was behind the island-wide decriminalization of marijuana. In 2017,Golding was elected to Parliament as the representative for South St. Andrew. [12]
After the PNP's loss in the 2020 election,Golding announced his intention to run for leadership of the party. Golding won the Presidency of the PNP on November 7,2020,defeating Lisa Hanna. He received praise for the upstanding nature of his campaign. [11] [10]
Mark married his wife,Sandra,in 1990. They have three children. He was a musician throughout his time at Oxford University and was the co-owner of a music label in the late 1990s.

Hanna was defeated by Mark Golding, receiving 1,444 votes to Golding's 1, 740 votes, a difference of 296 votes.

General elections were held in Jamaica on Thursday, 3 September 2020 to elect 63 members of Parliament. As the constitution stipulates a five-year parliamentary term, the next elections were not expected until between 25 February and 10 June 2021. However, Prime Minister Andrew Holness called early elections to ensure a united response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. On the advice of Holness, Governor General Patrick Allen dissolved Parliament on 13 August 2020.
Republicanism in Jamaica is a position which advocates that Jamaica's system of government be changed from a constitutional monarchy to a republic. Both major political parties – the Jamaica Labour Party and the People's National Party – subscribe to the position, and the current Prime Minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, has announced that transitioning to a republic will be a priority of his government. In June 2022, the Jamaican government announced its intention that Jamaica become a republic by the time of the next general election in 2025. The process will include a two-thirds majority vote in parliament along with a referendum.

Jamaica is the first English-speaking country in the Caribbean to achieve universal adult suffrage and grant women the right to be elected to Parliament. Between 1944 and 2020, a total of 47 women have been elected as members of the House of Representatives. As of September 2020 there are 18 women in the House of Representatives, the highest ever. This is a new all-time high at 29% and is the first time that female representation in the House of Representatives stands at more than a quarter of the total membership.

The 2020 People's National Party (PNP) leadership election was triggered after Peter Phillips announced his intention to resign as Leader of the People's National Party following the party's defeat at the 2020 general election. It was held on November 7, 2020. If Hanna was elected, she would have served as the second female President of a Jamaican political party and the second female Leader of the Opposition in Jamaican history. The election was won by Former Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament for St Andrew Southern and Attorney Mark Golding who secured 1,740 or 54.6% of the vote.
General elections are scheduled to be held in Jamaica by 2025.
