Matt Gay (born March 15, 1994) is an American professional football placekicker for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL). Gay played college football at the University of Utah and was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL draft.
Gay was born on March 15, 1994, to John and Suzy Gay. Gay grew up in Orem, Utah, and played both soccer and football at Orem High School, earning first-team honors in both sports. [1] Gay was the first player from Utah to attend the U-17 USA Men's National Team residency program. After graduating in 2012, Gay played two seasons of soccer for the Utah Valley Wolverines. [2]
Prior to the 2017 season, Gay transferred to the Utah Utes football team as a walk-on, becoming the school's seventh consensus All-American. [3] He also won the 2017 Lou Groza Award, being the first Ute to win the award as well as being the school's second-ever finalist. [4] Gay also won the 2017 Vlade Award. [5] That season, he led the nation in field goals and set a new Pac-12 Conference record with 30 field goals. [6] In 2018, Gay set school records for consecutive field goals and field goals in a game, receiving first-team All-Pac-12 honors. [1]

Gay was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round, 145th overall, of the 2019 NFL draft. [9] Gay made his professional debut in the Buccaneers' regular season opener against the San Francisco 49ers. He converted two extra points and one field goal in the loss. [10] On September 22, 2019, against the New York Giants, Gay missed two field goals, one extra point, and had an extra point blocked. [11]
On September 5, 2020, Gay was waived by the Buccaneers after the team signed veteran Ryan Succop. [12]
On September 15, 2020, Gay was signed to the Indianapolis Colts practice squad. [13] In a roster move he was released on November 6, [14] but re-signed to the practice squad the next day. [15]
On November 17, 2020, Gay was signed off the Colts' practice squad by the Los Angeles Rams to replace injured kicker Kai Forbath. [16] In Week 11 against his former team, the Buccaneers, on Monday Night Football, Gay was a perfect 3 for 3 on extra point attempts and made two of his three field goal attempts, including the game winner late in the fourth quarter, during the 27–24 win. [17] In 2021, Gay converted 32 of 34 field goal attempts and 48 of 49 points after touchdown, and was named to his first Pro Bowl. In an NFC divisional playoff game, also against the Buccaneers, he went 3 for 3 on extra point kicks and converted three of his four field goal tries, including the game winner from 30 yards out as time expired in a 30–27 victory, which sent the Rams to the NFC Championship Game. [18] He won his first Super Bowl title when the Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI, converting a 41-yard field goal in the third quarter as well as two points after touchdowns. [19]
On March 15, 2022, the Rams placed an original-round restricted free agent tender on Gay. [20]
In the 2022 season, Gay was reportedly fined $5,000 due to his pants not covering his knees during a 31-10 opening game loss to the Buffalo Bills in which he made a 57-yard field goal to end the half. [21] In week 14, Gay made the game-winning extra point to seal Baker Mayfield's comeback over the Las Vegas Raiders. [22]
On March 17, 2023, Gay signed a four-year, $22.5 million contract with the Colts. [23] At the time of the signing, Gay's contract was the largest free-agent contract for a kicker in NFL history. [24] During Week 3, versus the Ravens, Gay became the first kicker in NFL history to hit four 50+ yard field goals in one game, converting from 54, 53, 53, and 53 yards with the last one being an overtime game winner in the Colts 22–19 upset victory. Gay is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served a mission in Houston, although it was cut short due to depression. [27] Gay wears the initials "P.O." on a wristband to every game he plays, in honor of his high school teammate Parker Overly, who was killed in a car accident in 2017. [28]
Adam Matthew Vinatieri is an American former professional football placekicker who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 24 seasons with the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts. Vinatieri is the NFL's all-time leading scorer at 2,673 points, in addition to holding the NFL records for field goals made (599), postseason points (238), and overtime field goals made (12). He is considered one of the greatest placekickers of all time.

Michael Nugent is an American former football placekicker who played in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Ohio State Buckeyes, where he won the Lou Groza Award in 2004, and was twice recognized as a consensus All-American. He was selected by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2005 NFL draft, and also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Arizona Cardinals, the Cincinnati Bengals, the Dallas Cowboys, the Chicago Bears, the Oakland Raiders, and the New England Patriots during his 16-year career.
Robert Paul Gould III is an American former professional football player who was a placekicker for 18 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Chicago Bears, New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers. He played college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions. Gould was originally signed by the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2005. He played with the Bears from 2005 to 2015, earning first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors in 2006, and became the franchise's all-time leading scorer.
Steven Matt Bryant, nicknamed "Money Matt", is an American former professional football player who was a placekicker in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Baylor Bears, and was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the AFL's Iowa Barnstormers in 2000. Stephen Carroll Gostkowski is an American former professional football player who was a placekicker in the National Football League (NFL) for 15 seasons. A member of the New England Patriots for most of his career, he is the franchise's all-time leading scorer. Gostkowski played college football for the Memphis Tigers and was selected in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL draft by the Patriots, where he spent his first 14 seasons. In his final season, he played for the Tennessee Titans.
Nicholas Alexander Folk is an American professional football placekicker for the Tennessee Titans of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Arizona Wildcats, where he received first-team All-Pacific-10 honors, and was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL draft. Folk was named to the 2008 Pro Bowl as a rookie with the Cowboys before playing his next seven seasons with the New York Jets and becoming the franchise's second-leading scorer. Following an unsuccessful stint on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Folk spent a year away from football before pursuing a comeback in 2019 with the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football (AAF). Folk returned to the NFL the same year as a member of the New England Patriots and led the league in scoring during the 2021 season. He joined the Titans in 2023.

Ryan Barrow Succop is an American professional football placekicker who is a free agent. He played college football for the South Carolina Gamecocks and was the 2009 Mr. Irrelevant by virtue of being selected by the Kansas City Chiefs with the final pick of the 2009 NFL draft. Succop was the Buccaneers starting placekicker in their 31–9 victory over the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV, becoming the first Mr. Irrelevant to play and win a Super Bowl as a starter and an active player.
Kai August Forbath is an American former football placekicker who played in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the UCLA Bruins, earning consensus All-American honors and winning the Lou Groza Award in 2009. He played in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams.

Playing college football at UCLA, he was a consensus first-team All-American as a senior, when he was also awarded the Lou Groza Award as the nation's top college kicker in 2015. After winning the kicking position as a true freshman, Fairbairn became the Pac-12 Conference record holder for the most career points scored. Undrafted out of college, he signed with Houston as a free agent and was named their starting kicker the following year in 2017.

He played college football for the Georgia Bulldogs, where he kicked the longest field goal in Rose Bowl history. He played college football for the Illinois Fighting Illini. Since joining the NFL in 2019, McLaughlin has been a member of nine teams, including second stints for two organizations.
The 2021 season was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 46th season in the National Football League (NFL) and their third and final season under head coach Bruce Arians. They entered the season as defending Super Bowl champions and were attempting to become the first club to win consecutive Super Bowls since the team's quarterback Tom Brady did so with New England in XXXVIII and XXXIX along with being the first NFC club to do so since the Dallas Cowboys did in 1992 and 1993.
