Matthew Kai Stonie (born 1991or1992) [2] [3] [4] is an American competitive eater and YouTuber. Stonie won the 2015 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, dethroning 8-time defending champion Joey Chestnut. [5] Stonie has gained fame from his YouTube channel, to which he uploads video footage of his eating challenges. [4]

Early life

Stonie was born in San Francisco, California and raised in San Jose. [6] He is of Japanese, Lithuanian and Czech ancestry. [4] [6] He graduated from Evergreen Valley High School in San Jose. In 2013, he was listed as weighing 134 pounds (61 kilograms) at a height of 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 meters). [4] His nickname, "Megatoad," is from the character Toad from the Super Mario franchise. [4] Stonie's younger brother Morgan is oftentimes involved with the production of his challenges uploaded to his YouTube channel. [7]

Career

Stonie's Major League Eating debut was at the Stockton Deep Fried Asparagus Championship in Stockton, California in 2011. [8] At the time, he was the youngest member of the Major League Eating organization, being 18 years old. [9] His first win came in 2010 in a lobster roll eating contest in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. [4]

On July 4, 2015, Stonie defeated eight-time defending Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest champion Joey Chestnut by eating 62 hot dogs to Chestnut's 60. [10]

As of January 2024, Stonie has amassed over 16.3 million subscribers and 3.62 billion video views on his YouTube channel, with his most viewed video having been viewed over 145 million times. [11]

In August 2022, Stonie partnered with TGI Friday's to release his own franchise of fast casual restaurants, Stonie Bowls. [12] The franchise focuses on large portion rice and poke bowls. Stonie would release the debut announcement of the franchise as a challenge video that urges viewers to beat his time in eating one of the 5 pound ultimate Stonie bowls. [13]

Food challenges, such as the gallon challenge or the saltine cracker challenge, are specific challenges or competitions involving food. Milk chugging is a popular competitive eating challenge on college campuses, and was promoted by MTV's Jackass in the early 2000s via their various food skits.

Miki Victoria Sudo is an American competitive eater. She won the women's competition at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest every year from 2014 to 2020, unseating Sonya Thomas, who had won the women's competition since its inception in 2011. She captured a record ninth title in 2023. She has the current women's record for the contest, with 48.5 hot dogs eaten in it, which she did in 2020.

Carmen Cincotti is an American competitive eater and holder of multiple records in Major League Eating, who earned $10,000 for his second-place finish in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2017 in which he ate 60 hot dogs in ten minutes, twelve fewer than repeat champion Joey Chestnut. From August 2018 to June 2019, he was ranked number two in Major League Eating.

Edward “Cookie” Jarvis is a retired competitive eater and a member of the International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE). He is a real estate agent, married father of two, and cancer survivor. When Cookie Jarvis became a competitive eater in 2001, he was 365 pounds, and retired in 2006 reaching 525 pounds. His best finish in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest came in 2003, when he set an American record of 30½ hot dogs in 10 minutes. This put him in second place behind Takeru Kobayashi.

Michelle Cristeen Lesco is an American competitive eater. She is the 2021 women's champion in the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest, with 30.75 hot dogs and buns consumed in 10 minutes on July 4, 2021, ending Miki Sudo's 7-year reign.
